I remember so much from this trip. I remember: Wandering the train in the early parts of the journey, Riding in the "Silver Lariat", Going into the dome of SLRG 511 for the first time since the 2011 Wishram excursion, Sticking my head out of the first Amtrak horizon car in the consist and seeing a game involving youths as the train sped by, Meeting a kid named 'Josh' in the "Silver Splendor" and playing games on his ipad, Loosing and finding my glasses in the "Colonial Crafts", Getting a haircut in the "Overland Trail", Recording sound files, Helping a little kid get his toothpicks off the ground that he dropped, Staying in the hotel, showing a train drawing, sticking my head out the vestibule in the "Colonial Crafts", Getting off for the runby at the bridge, Sticking my head out the vestibule of some car while going through a tunnel, with the train roaring through, smoke from the 4449 trapped in the tunnel, lights from the car burning, which was pretty much epic. And for the rest of the journey, I just did what I could to enjoy the rest of the trip.

To back up 4449steam's point: when 4449 and her sisters ran on the California coastal route in regular service, they often encountered thick fog, especially in the bay area. An air horn is more piercing when it comes to overall volume, so the engines were equipped with air horns to warn motorists and pedestrians at crossings. The engines had whistles too, but they were actually rarely used.

I remember I was on the MAX home from work the night this trip got back. I saw the lights but didn't recognize the engine until I passed right by it. Talk about 0.0 moment!

markusdude1 Well, they put a whistle from an original GS-2 steam engine on the 4449. 4449 is a GS-4 so they might have had similar whistles.
