@@Xipheas but they are talking about board games. Discussion of broader. cross-cutting themes and cultural context is just something that has in the past been lacking in commentary around games compared to other forms of media.

The point you make about ditching Earth in the hopes of terraforming Mars is a really interesting narrative - so much time and effort spent on escaping to space when we could instead be aiming to stop the 'terrorforming' of Earth we're currently undergoing. I recently started watching The Expanse and the Mars-Earth friction explores that discussion, with the Martians looking down on the Earthlings for their mistreatment of a green and ocean filled home. Alas, there's no immediate capital to be made in slowing Climate Change. The long term profits of 'human sustainability' seem to be irrelevant to most.

This long form content is great. Something "On Mars" looks at that not a lot of other games try is the issue of time across space. We've already seen what an 18 minute delay does landing something on Mars. I'd love to see a space game simulate running a colony where you need to wait a turn if you want answers from "home planet"

Gotta echo what other people are saying. Board games are more than toys they are outlets to explore our creativity and ourselves. More so than digital games or books or movies the experience people can have in a board game can be as shallow or as metacognitive as we desire. Board games are truly stand-alone experiences in this world. Thank you both for these videos

I love these video essays. It's wonderfully researched and quite insightful. er ... I wonder if I should say anything about the same two-handed "here it is" hand movement that's repeated in each scene (at least as of the 12:43 mark). It's like the somatic version of saying "Uhh...." in speeches. I keep being mesmerized.

The thing about the fermi paradox and drake´s equation is: While there are probably many, many planets that could sustain life, it might still be extremely rare to occur. As long as we cant replicate biogenesis, the creation of living matter from dead matter without being digested by a living organism, we have no idea how rare life might really be. Will it, under thought-to-be ideal circumstances and on average, take 1 million test tubes and a 1000 years for life to spontaniously spring up in one of them? Or would it just take 100 test tubes running for 10 years? AFAIK we have no clue and if i am not mistaken, we are not even trying to find out. We dont even know if it is still occuring on earth (since "new life" would probably fail immediately due to competition with already existing and adepted life wherever it does occur, if it does). It all hinges on that moment that Q showed Picard in the last episode of "the next generation" - how likely and often does it occur? You can read about what science thinks had to happen, but it´s all just hypothesis, as this moment has never been witnessed or replicated. And a single replication still would not give us much of a clue on the overall statistical probability of occurance - if you roll a dice just once, you cant tell if it´s been tampered with. We´d have to do it many times to approach any reliable value to put into drake´s equation and as long as we havent it´s all just wild speculation. There might be billions of earth like planets and life on none but one, or there might be life on every single one of them. We just dont know, yet and cant even make an educated guess.
