I wanted to play around with mouse controlled turrets and decided to experiment and build a few small versions.

For the turret that is RC only, you can definitely do it with an advanced rotor. You just have to flip the connector upside down.

Damit! Literally, the day before this video came out I had to figure how to build these things on my own. Great video tho 👍

With connectors, the magnet affect turns off whenever you unlock. Imagine, you’re ambushed by enemies so you quick get into the turret, while your buddy takes evasive maneuvers. You unlock and are immediately sent flying XD. Of course that’s not really a problem for stations.

That's why you use a rotor. And set torque and brake torque at 0

You should experiment with a Rocheworld. (a set of two planets so close to each other that they share an atmosphere) They are pretty quick and easy to set up, and there's a whole lot of fun to be had on one of those.

Trick: you can use the O2/H2 Gen block or the connector block for a 3x3x2 big-to-small conveyor conversion instead of the 3x3x3 junction, similar to what you did with the last turret, just flip it upside down. For the first scripted turret, you can put it directly on the hinge and shoot "forward" instead of the "90 degrees" angle right now and make it somewhat tighter. Also, you can make the transition from large to small grid on the rotor and place a big small grid hinge, which takes up 3x3x3 small blocks instead of the 5x5x5 small blocks of the large grid hinge! _(General tip: one small block is 0.5 meters while one large block is 2.5 meters, making a small block 1 fifth in every dimension of a large one.)_

The standard small grid turret has also been very much limited by the devs. First, it has a targeting range limit of only 600 meters. I haven't tested to see if it can shoot beyond that range, but that's it's automatic targeting limit. In addition, it has a much slower firing rate. I know I've used them at times exclusively as defense against incoming rocket fire.

I do think that the one-axis turrets are limited use at best, since even if you've got a friend controlling the other axis it will require an almost superhuman level of coordination to properly aim with it. The only use I can see for it is as a defense against ground-based vehicles, and even then not being able to adjust your aim if they move slightly uphill will make it very difficult to work with.

You don't need the big conveyor. Just mate the large port on the back of the connector to the hinge or rotor, and use any of the 4 small ports on the sides of the connector. Ammo can pass through small conveyors, so no issue there. What's cool about this is you could still use the connector to connect something else, making a sort of "sandwich turret."
@mworld
@mworld 3 жыл бұрын
Just FYI: you dont require a merge block to join hinges together. You just build a rotor part on the other grid and tell the rotor to attach.
@PandemicPlayground
@PandemicPlayground 3 жыл бұрын
You're right. You can use either route, but connecting to parts usually easier.
@UfoLBeerSeeker

You could easily combine last two systems. Advanced rotor with small head. Small connector on top of it. This gives you 4 small ports around it and you can plop there your last design while having direct access to cargo, no need for remotes and any requirements set by having separate grid.

you should try to put a small 1x1x1 hinge in the large grid hinge if you want to make smaller turrets

This! just place the 1x1 hinge part inside a Large hinge base and attach. You may have more success doing that part in space, then copying or blueprinting it

hmm, some ideas for sure. I love the idea of warships with modular construction and everything changeable or maintainable from within the ship as if you didn't or don't have the jet pack. Plus the hiding weapons is a cool concept to me as it was actually done IRL with merchant war ships and such.

Most things done in this video with connectors can be done with adv. rotors. I would not put these connector turrets on my ship. They could be lost after a jump or some wild flight motions.

I don't think hinges work scriptless anymore, I'm trying it on console and it doesn't matter how much torque I add once the hinge falls over it just won't lift. Once it falls it even stops the rotor from turning left and right.

Trick: Use a large grid advance with a small head then put your conector on top of that to convert to small conveyor ports. the use a pair of small hinges with conveyors for six gattlgs on a small turret. Plus theres a script to slave a rotor turret to another turret.

I made a gravity turret for vanilla. I plan on eventually uploading it. With standard settings for welding, Im fairly sure I can get it to fire 4 rounds a second. If you want, I can give you the BP for it to showcase it better than the video I uploaded, lol. Works without scripts and is easy to build. I still need to tune its timing for official servers as well

something i've wanted to try but havent had the chance too cause no pc. try, using pistons. the 3x3 is a placement restriction and not an operating one yeah? so. imagine pistons with single block spacing in between that extend from the hull then retract into protective points. to place them. you extend one piston at a time, then retract and extend and place the next turret down the line

Any thoughts on MarmOS 3.1 vs "Cockpit Piston Rotor & Hinge Controller"? I'm struggling to set up MarmOS on drilling arm build with hinges. CPRH script looks much more straight forward to set up, but it might control fewer overall objects. I might give it a try as well and see if it will work for a drilling arm.

Hmm i could add some ions to the 12:30 turret. Let some welders print the turret/drone at the connectors and add a drone formation script and now we have 2 in 1 turrets/drones. i wonder how well this works with the designator. Many thx for your inspiring videos dave :)

working on a tower turret for my base using battletech weapons mod and its been a while since i've build a custom turret... got the left/right rotor movement easy enough without a script... but but up/down used to work using rotors and no scripts as well... i have gryo and remote block.. does using rotors for both axis no longer work scriptless?????? might redo up/down with a hinge... but was curious as to why my rotors were not doing both axis edit note... hinge can't be used due to weapon port needing the larger port size unless hinge is built before rotor... not sure if it will be stable that way..... using Arrow IV missiles x2 on turret
