I really like how space engineers allows for stuff like this to happen. The amount of resources and engineering required to make this thing work, along with how fragile the construction is, makes this weapon surprisingly balanced. It would be amazing at destroying capital ships, but a fighter could dodge the first few shots and put a nice little missile down its throat while the railgun is in the grinded down stage of its reload. If the projector, grinders, welders, or conveyor systems get destroying, the weapon is made essentially useless. I can't wait to see what other unique weapon designs come from this update.

Railguns can shoot through a half block wide hole so an armored version of this wouldn't be taken out with a rocket shot unless it was a really lucky shot

@@thejokestersquad3686 that's a good point, a strike craft with 4 light rail guns should be able to punch through enough armor to cause the necessary damage. @@oddctioum Well the best option is to slap a welder behind it. It will essentially be a component black hole, but it will be able to absorb round after round as long as you can keep repairing it fast enough. Which is why I use player made kinetic missiles against these guys, because people that build ships like this often opt for the near stationary, idle turret fest where they just sit in the middle of wherever a fight is going on and just wait to win. I promptly launch 4 torpedoes at their static ass and watch them transform into a very cubical pressure cooker. As the torpedoes explode the refineries, the fragments get inside, and then their self repair system, if even still works, closes every exit wound these projectiles could have exited the ship from, essentially trapping their most valuable internals in a sea of metal shards that will bang, burst and clang their way through stuff every time these baboons try to turn. It also just happens these guys tend to become spastic when damaged and mount obscenely powerful gravity drives to their ships because they found a blueprint on the workshop for it. Usually a few second later, the entire ship will combust. Which is then usually followed by a lot of swearing in the chat on how unfair that was. This is often followed by a prompt ban, because if there is anyone that would exploit more than server invaders doing offline raiding, that would be the server admins supposed to stop that.

hm, theres the easy fix by just making the thing need to charge after construction, the still-easy solution of adding batterys so it costs something to do this and the hard solution of rebalancing grinding/fire-rate of the thing while keeping it to what keen desired for the block. (rebalancing is NOT as simple as adjusting the numbers around, let alone for the single weapon, not unless your assuming that Keen doesn't care about how the different weapons compare to eachother) then theres the super-easy solution of just letting the thing be balanced by the extra weight, space and resource cost alongside the power. cas obviously this is strong...but is it stronger then a similar amount of space worth of rails firing? not sure about that even if the shots-per-minute is higher. Cas in most cases I suspect having 5 shots together is worth a surprising amount more then 5 times as many shots-per-minute even before the energy cost of the welder/grinders. Cas thats 5 shots parallel to eachother so that what they hit is pretty throughly gutted (if theres anything worth hitting where your pointing in the first place oc) AND its up-front so you don't have to wait 4*5 seconds to get it. plus, I suspect that you can put rails behind one another and shifted slightly to get a rail that has about as much cross-sectional area, if 2-3 times the space and a enourmous power-draw, but can put 15-ish shots in near perfect sync with eachother near-instantly and.........that..... would *instantly* kill pretty much anything that your likely to be capable of hitting. that being said, I think the best solution is to make railguns have damage stats proprotional to how much energy you put in so that the thing having long recharge time is explictly why its useful---so you CAN fire it every 4 seconds but there's little gain. the 60 second recharge is just how long it takes to reach full power (I feel like if the games mechanics accidentally let this exploit in, then there might be a legit reason for it to be there, so-to-speak.....cas I don't believe in coincidences).
