Space Engineers: TSC C5 Lamprey Demo

Demonstration of a C5 Lamprey boarding craft, launched from the TSC Charlottesville assault carrier for boarding and recovery of the disabled cruiser, SPRT Aspen.
Made entirely with vanilla game parts, the Lamprey is designed to latch on to opposing spacecraft, cut through exterior armor with an integrated grinder system, and deploy a boarding party into unprotected areas of the ship. Each C5 comfortably carries 8 passengers within its heavily-armored, pressurized cabin and features dual Gatling cannons for point defense.

That is so sick. At first I thought, oh it's just a grinder ship that grinds one block at a time, but then you left the cockpit and suprised pikachu face, its a boarding vessel. Absolutely awesome. This would be a sick craft to bring into a player vs player battle. Just set the main ships to ai blocks then board the enemy vessel. Or just use it for rp reasons. Fantastic design either way.

this is actually amazing, it looks like a cutscene when you flew out of that hangar. The shape of the ship looks really good too with what it is designed to do, I also like how you exit where the grinder was. very well executed ship 👍

Very well executed movie, well done! Setting up the battle must have taken a long while, but it looks really good, like a blockade. Also, the Hangar scene is great. This is awesome. The only critique I could offer is that the boarding craft, while it looks really good, would sadly not be practical in a real battle. The subgrids that make it unique and look better are hard to mass produce, and if you board an enemy ship during combat, most of your boarding craft will probably be shot down if the enemy sees them. The 'mouth' is great and is needed for the craft to function, but the others like the little bridge or landing gear could be made without subgrids for easier mass production. For a cinematic that would look worse, so I'm happy you took the time to set that up. The landing gears especially look really good. Have a great day

Thanks! Unfortunately you’re entirely correct that it would be useless in a real battle. Even with all the armor, a decent missile or artillery hit sends it into a glitchy death spiral. Most of my builds I go for form over realistic function since I never play multiplayer and there’s very precious few ships to actually fight against in single player.

The problem is "meta" space engineers builds tend to just be big cubes of guns or other jank builds that can decimate any reasonable looking ship easily. The game is a lot more fun played with a sort of "role play" element and "off meta" builds if you will.

Thanks! All the ships are on the same team so the entire battle is very planned and staged. Lots of timer blocks, action relays, and some warheads. Most of the battle runs automatically when I pass under a sensor leaving the hangar, but that specific turret shoots at me and is destroyed when I toggle an action relay. You can actually hear me toggle it right before it shoots.

Nice idea. Wouldn't mind seeing it against another player or SEAI being installed on the capital ship to give you more of a challenge and to really see the flight capabilities of the lamprey. Good job though. More patience than I that's for sure

As a cinematic it was good, but it would be generous to call it a demo. My general opinion is that the boarding craft should be lighter armored, have the engines on the back be bigger, get rid of the armored door and or make the ship able to be mounted to the side of your other large capital ships instead of having them take up space in the interior hangers that can only have like two boarding crafts

Might I ask, how long it took you to build it and set up the keys and everything? Also, is there any chance you can try it with a large thruster instead of a grinder, just to see if it can melt through the large blocks? I think that would be kind of fun and interesting, but my computer is borked right now, so I cant even try it out. hahahha!

@@SplatterEffectGaming probably took roughly 12-14 hours for the Lamprey build and a further 6ish hours to set up and film the scenario. Most of the scenario time was because of me trying to do it all in one take and various resets due to klang or operator error 😅 Interesting concept using the thruster instead of the grinder though… may have to give that a shot 🤔

@@Togs8860 I think it would just make for a different kind of scinimatic if someone sees the armor blocks melted instead of ground down. Just my thoughts though. Lol! It would be one of those things where you'd just have that specific thruster set to full override and then of course just have it on a toggle. To turn it on and off. Obviously you probably already knew that since you seem to build pretty complex looking things. :) keep up the great content though. I always have an appriciation for stuff like this

@@Shamr0ck01 Yup! The two halves of that specific ship are only held together by a connector. The artillery shells that are shot at it hit a warhead for effect while simultaneously a timer disconnects the two halves and a pair of gyros gently rotate them.

Pretty nice, but useless, big and not strong, easier to make a small long ship, ramming with landing force will be many times more effective and destroy the ship's systems and you can land in the depths of the ship While you're cutting, the guy with the grenade launchers will be waiting for you
