I'd argue that there's significant design considerations between small-grid and large-grid gunships, to the point where large-grid ones are really more of a separate classification in their own right. Small grid gunships are definitely more of a ground-attack vehicle, with some ability to go up against large grids but not to the same degree as a bomber. A large grid "gunship" is really more of a patrol boat, gunboat or bird of prey depending on the configuration. A patrol boat would be a lighter-armed general purpose ship used primarily for scouting, light engagements and stealth attacks. A gunboat is a heavily armed and heavily armored ship of a similar size designed to provide fire support against larger targets while fighting alongside larger ships. And a Bird of Prey is a lighter and more nimble but still heavily armed vessel designed to aggressively hunt gunboats, patrol boats and corvettes while also being able to make attack runs against larger ships.

I'm pretty sure most of my small grid ships would fall in the "gunship" category per this video. About the closest thing I make to a fighter are typically using the rover cockpit mod and very little else other than what it needs to move and some gatling cannons. They're tiny, zippy, but get splatted pretty quickly if anything gets a good shot in. Anything larger than that gets 6 to 8 turrets on at least four gatling cannons. There isn't a middle ground for me with small grid.

@@anotherthing I think the main difference between gunships and other ships is that they shouldn’t be self-sustainable or have oxygen vents or other things to make them have more comfortability and such. Just pure damage and armor with minimal crew space and other design features, and would have to be restocked with larger ships more frequently then some other more sustainable ships.

I call my small grid gunships "gunboats." Most of them can carry ground vehicles so the role coincides with dropships in most cases.

Interesting. You seem to ve blending gunships and gunboats into one consolidated ship type. In general, gunships are heavily armed small grids meant to provide aerial fire support and CAS to ground forces, while gunboats are more of an ultralight civilian/policing patrol craft. In my own doctrine, gunships lead ground assaults by saturating the potential LZ with fire to clear it for dropships, before orbiting the area to continue acting as ground support. Meanwhile, gunboats are strictly limited to planetary/station defense posts and are armed with one or two medium anti-ship weapons with a pair of AA guns and a lot of anti-personnel weapons. If they encounter an actual fighting force the most fleet involvement they have is radioing a proper strike group, delaying the enemy until the QRF arrives, then vacating the area while the real warships do the fighting. As for the light cheap anti-ship role, that niche is filled by "torpedo" frigates and DDGs. Both are far more capable, durable, and versatile than a gunboat for only slightly more cost.

I find gunships optimal for combat. They can carry enough weapons for dealing with anything, they are agile enough to dodge fire and they are small and cheap enough to not be a big deal if destroyed.

Excellent video again. I love this series and your take on these things. It would be fascinating to see a fleet organization proof of concept based on your ship descriptions. The gunships are a fascinating class of ship. Your doctrinal description of them is in line with a lot of military and historical applications. A great thing about gunships is cost effectiveness as local defense force assets. They don't have the patrol range of a rated ship, but these boats can tilt the firepower ratio in a local engagement if properly staged/ based. Excellent stuff, sir. Inspirational creativity and commitment to the hobby. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I’ll always consider a gunship a small grid ship in the context of SE. The idea of it being something akin to the heavy attack helicopters or the AC-130 of contemporary military aircraft, or like the weapon refitted Pelicans in Halo. More of a ground attack ship or a dropship escort/armed troop transport for boarding actions in the confines of 0g operations. Gunboats is what I’d consider what this video is about. (Small) large grid ships meant for taking on fighters or corvettes, which would be the next logical step up in size

A very interesting take on the Gunship classification. Personally, I think of Gunships as being primarily armed Troop Transports or heavy fightercraft. When not transporting ground troops or marines, gunships should be providing Air to ground support or acting in the role of a fighter/bomber. What you classify as large gunships, I would think to be an Assault Corvette, or a light Frigate. But these are just my opinions.

I've just recently gotten into space engineers, playing on the skunkworks server casually with some friends when we have the time, and we're working towards designing a fleet for ourselves, and have a lot of fun experimenting in creative to see what works. Unfortunately in vanilla, and even more so with mods, fighters and small grids just aren't up to snuff compared to capital ships. Point defenses typically shred through them, giving you no chance to return fire unless they're a 2 man with a turret, or you have a major swarm of them. Despite this, I still *really* want to make carriers and fighters work, even if it is an uphill battle with all of these super-powered mod weapons.

Sorry I didn't realize comments with links get auto deleted, I'll try with titles. This video reminded me of Marcelo ACFM video titled: "Fleet Review 2018 sub frigate classes" on KZbin where they use the "MTF REMORA Class Patrol Boat" and another to discuss classification and also how the game handles damage; has the game mechanics changed enough to change design philosophy since then?

Gunships I find odd. It's an odd idea to have a generalist gunship, considering size. Hopefully their mobility works well enough here. If mobility isn't good enough, I need to come back to the drawing board. Sidenote: I have been experimenting with an SG railgun custom turret as an anti-fighter complement. The idea here is a counter to fighters shifting in and out of turret/lock on range. You make use of the high damage and projectile velocity of the railgun.

Recommending spamming lead in their general direction over hoping to land a hit using a railgun.
@TechnicalOveride Жыл бұрын
@@EnjoyCocaColaLight It does seem like in theory that a railgun would be real good at dealing with fighters, as they've got a whole lotta velocity, and one good hit could probably take out/cripple most fighters
@EnjoyCocaColaLight Жыл бұрын
@@TechnicalOveride The woundup before it fires makes it difficult. If it changes direction just as your gun fires, there's no hit. Whereas a wall of lead being rolled out like a red carpet may miss 80% of its bullets - but only 10% is needed to down the craft.
@TechnicalOveride Жыл бұрын
@@EnjoyCocaColaLight i'd say that if you have a decent turn rate on your custom turret, you could probably do wonders. could also make a good weapon on a fighter if you've got good aim/timing
