You can cancel plasma charge by pressing reload after it's starts to build heat.

Just a tip on Plasma weapons: When I keep a weapon charged and don't want to shoot it before it over heats I dodge and it cancels the charge without wasting the shot.

The pvp in this game feels super stale. No type of skill tree or weapon upgrades like the operation mode. Progression only unlocks weapons.
