15:27 it does make sense, if platform weight is 1 unit it needs 1 rocket to accelerate to 1m/s in 1 second. If weight is 10 units it needs 10 rockets to accelerate (AND slow down) to same speed in same time.

The hub has a chest like inventory, so you can use that to buffer some materials instead of throwing them overboard. But since the (chest) space is limited you will probably only want a small buffer or none at all and just plan for irregular item availability.
@Quaitgor Жыл бұрын
That finished platform example looks really optimized, but it doesnt use the hub at all, not even one slot to pass items to another section. If built correctly you can save space by passing items through the hub, even 2 slots reservered inside the hub would allow for a big design improvements. Also you could increase the hubs size selectivly by adding cargo space modules, which could be used to make in and output even easier, but its not used at all in the example. I honestly think, that the hubs inventory is locked for construction and transport only. Like the trains cargo isn't used to fuel the train on the surface, its cargo only.
@Alikimoko Жыл бұрын
But that's the thing. Just looking at the examples you can see them pulling items out and putting them in the hub already. The uranium for the science packs for instance, which are then put back inside. Unless they limit some specific items from entering the hub. You wouldn't want people to send back the materials for space science down to Nauvis in bulk to be crafted there (unless sending that cargo down is a lot more expensive than just sending the uranium up, or the recipe only works in space). It could also just be for balancing reasons or they want you to experiment by yourself.
@pepperbox-ic3oo Жыл бұрын
u can see on the platform that making space science, there are inserters used to take excess asteroids and science outputs back to the hub, and U235 from the hub to assemblers. The hub will definitely act as a giant chest that u can expand with the cargo module. I believe they balanced their footprint and inventory space so that u need to carefully design how much inventory space u need, unlike where a single steel chest can give u 48 slots, which is as they mentioned, excess storage compared to the hub.

It does make sense that a larger platform would require more propulsion in space. I know you were thinking of weight, but in this case, it's mass, which is how much matter something contains. It requires larger amounts of force to move an object the more mass it possesses.
@nnelg81392 ай бұрын
You can still move larger masses with weak forces in space, it just takes longer.

I was wondering how/why the turrets further to the middle of the platform also start shooting at the same time as those further out. Probably because those towards the middle are higher quality and thus have bigger range!

The use of Gun turrets for asteroid defence might be justified by the need for spaceships to have active heat management, which isn't a feature in factorio
@mqb3gofjzkko7nzx38 Жыл бұрын
I think it has more to do with the limited energy supply on the platform. A laser turret requires 1.2 MW to fire and fitting all that power production on the platform is harder than building ammo production.

I'd love to see some sort of Specialised "Space Robot" as the unit that maintains the Platforms. It might even make your space elevator idea more feasible by requiring these "Space Robots" and materials as consumables for maintaining said elevator on pair of a very destructive failure. 😊😊 I'm glad they are making planning on making efficiency modules more useful, I would love if they could make some of their weapon ideas better in a similar way. Some sort of turret to deploy the weapon bot capsules or some way of deploying mines other than bots.

On the reddit the devs have been commenting on various things and they've said that there's a planned animation for the remote building on the space platform that they are still working on, I assume whatever this animation ends up being they will use a similar thing for repairs as well, as long as we provide the platform with repair packs

They take more force to accelerate at the same rate yes. But once moving, they keep moving. And that's not what we see in these images. It seems space platforms have drag. I think that's what Nilaus was referring to.
@philippeperrault8400 Жыл бұрын
Yep we are still constrained by F=m*a Higher mass means you need more force to get the same acceleration. To get that increase in force you need to more engines or more efficient engines.

a quick study of the high quality items graphic on the FFF shows 2 chemical plants (one either side at the rear next to the engines) that are not connected. I think it might be to make the engines work intermittently as the addition of a pipe on each would double the fuel supply.
@sedivh0 Жыл бұрын
It is also very likely that those rocket engines are using a sort of liquid bipropelant and I am assuming the blue liquid to be liquid oxygen which is often used as a coolant when operating these rockets. The orange liquid would be the fuel, and given that it picked up carbon from the belt and uses water makes me think of liquid hydrocarbon fuels.

Would the 2 chemical plants at 15:39 be Hydrogen and Oxygen because water in (H20) and a Orange gas (Hydrogen) and Blue gas (Oxygen) Edit: also just noticed the iron input (maybe some chemical reaction like electrolysis to split H2 and O2?)
@drevil129 Жыл бұрын
The first plant just turns ice into water. The one making the red liquid takes in water and carbon, so it must be taking the Hydrogen from the water through electrolysis to make a Carbon-Hydrogen fuel like methane/butane/propane or something more complex. The one making blue liquid takes in water and iron, so I would guess it's taking the Oxygen from the water electrolysis and mixing it with Iron to make Iron-Oxyde aka rust. The rust is probably bringing the Oxygen to the thruster's chemical reaction as a solid oxydizer, I think iron oxyde is used in this manner in thermite for example. I would think that it would be simpler to just split the Hydrogen and Oxygen from the water, then burn the Hydrogen with the Oxygen in the thrusters, resulting in just water vapor as output, but instead we're capturing carbon and then releasing it by burning this CH-based fuel, which explains the super dirty black smoke trail 😄

Will it be possible to build two platforms, one of which is immovable, i.e. that it is in the orbit of a planet, and the other platform is mobile, moving from planet to planet. A fixed platform is technically a place where a moving platform parks and delivers/takes resources, like a train depot ?

newtons third law of motion... even an ion thruster with just a few grams of thrust can get a 500kg+ satellite out of orbit of a planet given enough time, energy and fuel since there is no real friction/air resistance stopping it, a rcs thruster/rocket fuel engine is needed if you need quicker acceleration and deceleration but they use more fuel.

@Dani0x1B Жыл бұрын
@@thakillman7 That is true but misleading. Because it's in freefall (i.e. in orbit) and outside of the atmosphere, you will have pretty much the same experience of gravity as if the Earth was not there. That is, things don't "fall down", they stay in place. They are, actually, falling, but they fall at the same rate as the rest of the station (including you), in a trajectory that keeps everything orbiting.
