Or even just having him provide color commentary while an experienced player takes him on a tour of the ship-building process in the game would be fun. That way he's not spending a lot of time trying to learn how to navigate the controls and the game mechanics, and he can focus on recognizing the real world inspirations for the various elements in the game and giving us context for those things. I know I already learned a bunch just from watching this video.
@Danceofmasks
@Danceofmasks Жыл бұрын
@@Shad0wchasers1 the game mechanics have very little to do with space ... max speed and maneuverability implies air resistance, similarly range limits on weaponry also imply firing through a medium. The way you hit a boost like you have afterburners instantly setting your speed to a high value or dropping your speed to zero soon as your engines get unpowered ... Starfield's ships may look like a duck, but they definitely do not quack like a duck.

@@LTNetjak They already have grav drives that hand-wave local physics on board ... except when it doesn't (such as boarding a ship with an inactive grav drive). They could have easily leaned into how much control you have over inertia etc. with grav drive power, but instead they chose to make it an F-16 dogfight instead.

Having an expert actually speak on the reality of some of the designs for space ships in Starfield is awesome because he gives proper insight and on what we can do now verse what the game indicates and in all honesty I really want to see his opinion on our custom ships cuz some of us have gone bananas with the starship creation.

Honestly, as obvious as it is, it was neat hearing him talk about having to reduce weight and stuff, considering reducing weight is a huge park of ship building in Starfield, or having to add engines and stuff if the ship's too heavy. I had to remake most of my ship yesterday because I needed an extra couple of LY on my jump range, to get to where I wanted to go. Once it was built, it was still a bit too heavy, so I had to go in and start removing unneeded decorative parts, and replacing cargo holds with slightly worse, but lighter weight cargo holds, until I finally got it to the jump range I wanted.

@thizzmonkey7846 Жыл бұрын
@@TXFDA it does take some time to get more skills for your character but I’d say by the time you hit your third NG+ it will be easier to get ships to reach further destinations. But I also reworked all of my spacecraft to have weight reducing parts on them to replace some of the hull panels I was using. The Nova Galactic skeletonized frames help allot and after perking high into space craft design I hopped systems repeatedly and put parts on my ships from each manufacturer to make custom space craft that were like seeing a flying hot rod not gonna lie I make some ridiculously badass fighters so plenty of times the ships is a bit bigger than normal but it is so fast and maneuverable that I’m just out flying anyone else and I’m on their asses like stank on shit.

The first ship is Nova Galactic corporation. IT's supposed to be "what if NASA made these ships?" In fact, I think I remember seeing some lore stating that Nova Galactic was formed from the remains of NASA, and is the oldest starship manufacturer in the game. They would have been manufacturing starships back when function was more important that sleek design.

That was really fun to hear his take. The game designers did some remarkable work in researching how to convincingly handle these details. But one of the more fantastical things I think would be the relatively small volume allotted to fuel capacity. I don't think Starfield has anti-grav systems assisting the thrusters like Star Wars ships do. So, for a ship that is all rockets, it must be some incredibly amazing breakthrough in thrust/fuel ratios in future tech.
@CaptainKeen
@CaptainKeen Жыл бұрын
One of the systems is a "Grav Drive" that provides artificial gravity, and somehow FTL capability. But, if they can create artificial gravity they can probably cheat and lighten the ship, or something. Without that there's absolutely no way these ships would function.
@Someguy6571
@Someguy6571 Жыл бұрын
Remember these ships are being fueled by helium-3, not some conventional chemical fuel. helium-3 is an IMMENSE source of energy. Twenty-five metric tons of helium-3, about a quarter of the cargo capacity of a SpaceX Starship, would suffice to fuel all the power needs of the United States for a year. So its easy enough to figure these ships don't need to have a massive fuel storage taking up much of their weight to get them moving. Also these ships are most likely power by massive fusion powerplants. Or in some cases Tokomaks as well. Lastly these ships do have grav-drive systems. So its easy enough to think they supply their own gravity as well while in space.

Fascinating insights from an expert! I think we also need to consider that these ships are designed around how they would operate on an Earth like planet or Moon. Because for larger planets, with more G, you need much more thrust to gain escape velocity, thus larger engines, fuel tanks etc. Also, because it is a game, we don't consider the impact on such a ship landing on an extreme planet like Venus, with extremely high pressure and very corrosive atmosphere. The Soviets built a probe especially for the conditions on Venus, and it lasted 20 seconds after touchdown. An other angle is how it would behave on almost absolute zero temperatures, say you land on Pluto, where methane gas is frozen solid hard as rocks. Such a place would made the metal of the ship shrink and become brittle or who knows, it is uncharted territory for science. But for me, ship building is one of the most rewarding systems in this game, as exploration is kind of stale without vehicles or aids.

Well from a lore perspective in the game, the primary fuel supply is I believe a specialized mixture of nuclear reaction and pressurized He-3 (Helium 3). Also the developers took a serious consideration of functionality over style with an add on OF style. Which they called "Nasa-Punk" which as I just said takes the primary realism of a modern NASA craft and added some flair to it. I'd love to see you build a realistic spacecraft based on your own knowledge with what's available in the game.

In Starfield the propellant storage for the engines isn't shown in any of the details. The fuel tanks that are added in the ship designer are to contain He3 for the gravity drive (the game's in universe take on both FTL and shipboard gravity control). The engine fuel seems to be handwaved in as part of the total engine assembly rather than as a part in its own right. Refueling of both He3 and propellant is also handwaved as it's just presumed that the ship can top up those tanks in any system it stops in long enough, even in those that lack stations, starports, or even an appropriate stellar body to siphon off. This makes for much smoother game play but of course reduces realism.
@Riva1000
@Riva1000 Жыл бұрын
And if you want a bit more 'realistic' .. well, more hands-on approach to spaceship fuel and refueling, you can try and play Elite: Dangerous. You will get stranded with empty tanks there more than once 😄 And sitting in a your ship, that is slowly shutting down around you, in the emptiness of space, with 20 minutes of air left, sending out emergency signal, waiting if one of the player volunteers that run rescue operations will take a pity on you, is a whole new powerful experience 🙂

I'd be interested to hear someone talk about He3 as the fuel source. It actually has potential to be used as fuel for fusion reactors one day!
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 Жыл бұрын
Helium 3 is the fuel for the reactor and the rockets. It's just that take off / landing isn't counted because it's such a small percentage of the actual fuel used, compared to running the grav drive to go to different star systems, but I also imagine the reactor works in conjunction with the rocket systems, powering mechanisms in order to increase thrust. There always need to be something to expel for thrust, and the whole point of using Helium 3 for both energy generation and thrust is that it reacts with deuterium while also being non radioactive. So they might be "wasting" their reactor fuel by expelling it, but that just comes with the territory of using Helium 3.
@MostlyPennyCat
@MostlyPennyCat Жыл бұрын
If we assume that the reactors run at the same temperature as the sun. 40% of the sun's output comes from He³ + He³ = He⁴ + H + E Now you could let the He⁴ and H continue fusing, producing Beryllium⁷ and more He³ and more energy but it's a small fraction of the output. So we activate the Magic SciFi Filter and use the He⁴ as reaction mass. As for the H¹, it'll start back up the fusion chain H¹ + H¹ = H² + E H² + p = He³ + E This accounts for another 40% of the sun's output, however it requires protons (H¹) And as you only get 1 proton from He³ fusion and need 3 protons to get back to He³, you don't have enough. And as there's no H² tank, we'll assume they're using H¹ as reaction mass too. Activate Super Hydrogen Filter. So: He³ + He³ = E + m The energy is captured and used to power the reactor, the systems, the weapons and the engines. The mass is used in the engines and I assume the mass driver cannons as well. _EAT HOT HELIUM SPACERS?_ Er...

Adding some context to what he explains with in-game context: The fuel tanks here didn't store the fuel for the engines (the engines somehow draws fuel automagically from somewhere), since the fuel tank is used to store He-3, the fuel required for Grav Jump, the in-game explanation for FTL travel between the star systems. The best part after several hours tinkering with the ship building mechanics, is the fact that each landing gear have different number of landing thrust power, with each landing thrust power holds around 200 point of mass, while my most disliked feature is how the placement of the engine basically doesn't affect the mobility of the spaceship (like how putting just a single engine in the middle could produce enough thrust to be that agile???), would love to see how the distance of each engine placement toward the ship center of gravity could provide like mobility bonus to help the turn and such.

I would like to point out that the external fuel tanks aren't for the regular engines. They store Helium-3 for use with the grav drive which is used for ftl travel. I'm assuming that the fuel for the standard engines is in integrated tanks. I think the machining part on the gear was done out of ignorance on the part of Bethesda with the modern method of making things lighter not necessarily being widespread knowledge. Give it some more years and it will be as well know as the shuttle. Now when it comes to control surfaces, I prefer a method that uses things like sticks and switches with some glass being involved mostly for display purposes. I don't trust touch screens all that much as they seem like something more finicky and easier to break. My phone is plenty of touch screen use for me.

@@Mr_Waffle. Yes the tech part is never explained. There is a loading screen tip that says: helium3 can be found on moons, it serves as fuel for your grav drive. Yet, you do not need to mine it to grav drive. Within solar systems you do not need the He3 fuel, but you do need fuel for your normal engines, but it is never explained how the rocket equation is overwon. It most likely works like the Eppstein Drive from The Expanse, which also has a nucleair fusion reactor.

@@Ecclesia_ originally todd wanted players to have to use fuel like in no mans sky but they changed that at some point but didnt bother changing the loading screen lore . Pretty much like the pre war suit of XO1 PA in nuka world that the loading screen says " developed by surviving remnants of the military after the war " hey it just works after all 🤔

It's more like a plot hole, because the gravity plating is clearly derived from the grav drive technology. The grav drive bend space to travel long distances. The gravity plating would need to do the same, but at a much lower level, to bend space just a little bit. But even then, gravity plating itself introduces all sorts of problems. You can't just make it at a persons feet, because then the rest of their body would be weightless. I'd also imagine it would be more like a gradient, but not one you could exactly control precisely. So for example, the gravity field itself from the grav plating would have to extend beyond the ship, which poses all sorts of problems, both for space travel and ship design. For example, say you have 3 decks with grav plating on each. That would likely result in each deck above feeling progressively heavier in gravity, due to the pull from the decks below. I can't imagine that grav plating has an exact cut off point where gravity suddenly becomes non existent. And since you'll be having gravity on multiple places on the ship, that can change design requirements drastically, because it would be impossible to make the stresses of gravity equal across the entire ship. There would have to be dead zones, and if you've got something with uneven loads on it, that could easily cause problems with structural stability.

Just a question, when it comes to viewing ports on a ship, is it better to have cameras to view the outside or is a windshield is fine? Kind of a train of though that's been floating around the internet. I would think a windshield would be a major weak spot on a ship, but NASA still uses them. Although I know weight is a major driving factor in modern ship design.

They are supposed to be fueled by "Helium-3" And, they have energy shields of some sort, that would probably negate any heat on re-entry problems.

one note on the food pads, is that's all nova galactic, as well as the frontier essentially being almost an antique. Love the comments. I often am very critical of on of the survival games I play on my other channel. There are some things that were more realistic at one point but the creators have let the mechanics realism slip as they increase the games visual realism. That just leaves me in a weird place where I feel like it should be more reflective of reality but its increasingly not as real. Very incongruous.

It’s fairly simple to understand (not to create), constant acceleration of 1G creates the feeling of Earth’s gravity, at the halfway point you flip the spacecraft around and decelerate at 1G, same deal. The problem here is the energy requirement, it’s constantly increasing acceleration. We don’t have anything close to the technology to do this (fusion probably), although the Orion project is a possibility but also kind of insane.

The engines don't use liquid fuel though - they're powered by a fusion reactor. The fuel tanks are strictly for He3 which is used for grav drives, and the size of the tank determines total range for grav jumps.

Oh nice, I alyways put my fuel hidden inside my ship. I make a huge ship with habs never connecting from upper or lower ports.(so no ladders in my big ship with lots of habs) I use the double layer cockpit with stairs to access my top layer habs. I use Hope connectors to keep top habs from touching the bottom habs.. And a brig directly connected to the bay and one to the dock. So my entrances are protected. So this layout leaves alot of empty space inside. Great for fuel and cargo. It also makes a big ship that weights significantly less than other ships the same size.
