Just saw auroras over south germany after this G4 solar storm, absolutely stunning and unexpected to see them so far away from the north pole/nordic countries.

Also crazy how it literally looks like it's from every direction. At least my dad told me that it's from every (well except one because one part of our plot has a building that is entirely covering one direction and there was nothing, also this was friday as well)

Such a large storm that it has reach that far and into the uk, if it's such a large storm is that abnormal behaviour for our sun?
@TrafficDE7 ай бұрын
@@foreveryoungRx8x6 No it's completely normal. The sun is pretty active right now due to it's solar cycle. The last solar storm this size that hit earth was in 2003. (2003 Halloween Solar Storms) No need to worry. :)

How does earth regen its magnetic field
@KME46987 ай бұрын
That's not how magnetic fields work. The field is generated by the rotational energy/internal dynamo of the Earth's molten iron.
@mxb24326 ай бұрын
Like Kyle said, as long as Earth's core is active, it will generate a magnetic field. But I'm curious about one thing.. Like the sun, Earth's magnetic poles flip once in a while. ("These reversals are random with no apparent periodicity to their occurrence. They can happen as often as every 10 thousand years or so and as infrequently as every 50 million years or more. The last reversal was about 780,000 years ago. ) Reversals are not instantaneous; they happen over a period of hundreds to thousands of years, though recent research indicates that at least one reversal could have taken place over a period of one year." So I truly wonder what will happen when the Earth's poles will be flipping and we get hit by a serious solar storm. 😯

Space weather, which refers to the conditions in space, including solar wind, solar radiation, and cosmic particles, can have a direct impact on Earth's atmosphere, especially the Earth's magnetosphere and the phenomena we observe as auroras. The solar wind a stream of charged particles released by the Sun interacts with Earth's magnetic field, causing disturbances that can lead to geomagnetic storms. These storms are responsible for the vibrant displays known as auroras, or the Northern and Southern Lights. When charged particles from the solar wind collide with the gases in Earth's upper atmosphere, such as oxygen and nitrogen, they excite these gases to higher energy states. As the gases return to their normal state, they emit light, creating the colorful bands and curtains of the aurora. The colors depend on the type of gas involved: oxygen produces green and red hues, while nitrogen can produce blue and purple shades. Space weather events, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections (CMEs), can intensify this interaction between solar wind and Earth's magnetic field, resulting in stronger auroras that can be seen at lower latitudes, even as far south as regions of Canada, the northern U.S., and northern Europe. These solar storms can also interfere with satellite communications, GPS signals, power grids, and other technology-dependent systems on Earth. Thus, monitoring space weather is crucial for understanding how these disturbances affect human technology and the natural world. It helps scientists predict the timing and intensity of auroras and other space weather phenomena, allowing for enhanced preparedness and protection of critical infrastructure.

Fact: When the magnetic field breaks, it releases an outburst of energy called “solar flares”. Solar flares travel at the speed of light, and they are high energy ultraviolet light and x-rays. They reaches the earth in just 8 minutes, rather than 18 hours like the coronal mass ejection (CME)
Now that means electricity will be saved from the solar flares.

That's a tough one, there are good theories but we don't know for absolute certainty. It's supposedly a moving liquid metal core along with smaller eddie currents moving in different directions from the core to produce a field, almost like an electromagnet in a sense.
