The pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler from Bundaberg, Australia began his flying career with a glider he made himself. A piece of wood from that glider was launched on the shuttle "Challenger" when it exploded in 1986. Remarkably the wood, still in it's bag was found floating off the Florida coast and is now in the English home of Hinkler, which was taken down and re-erected in Bundaberg in 1983.

Listened to HI today and was so excited to hear you'll have a larger role in front of the camera Brady. You're enthusiasm for historical, scientific, and sentimental importance of "things" I find very relateable on the podcast. The scribal abbreviation after the "the" he uses at about 2:05 is gorgeous - I'm presuming he's using it the way we'd use an ellipsis in a quote today. I love typography and scribal scripts.

Well yes. Museums are in constant competition to bring the most fabulous items for all over the world. It's a continuity of the colonisation, science and prestige rivalry we had for centuries. I'm pretty sure British are quite proud of their Royal Society (as they should be), as we are proud of our Académie des Sciences.

Hehe, I worked in a US government facility for 15 years (as a contractor, not direct employee) and used those yellow 'messenger envelopes' occasionally. This video makes them sound so special... they're just for internal mail like if you want to send something to someone else in the same building. We referred to them as 'cheesys' due to their color and the holes they had in them. I imagine they got a lot more use before email.

As long as it stays as vague as "Space Wood" it should be fine. Assuming you don't already have a deep knowledge of what space wood could have possibly meant. I had no idea. I like your sign off. Great Comment. A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

***** Vagueness helps. I didn't really know what to think of "Space Wood" but when they were looking at the book of memoirs of Newton and Brady says something like "you might think this is today's object," I was pretty sure from the title it wasn't. It's not a big deal. This is the kind of things that happens on KZbin videos all the time. People generally don't work out the title of the video before actually making the video. I've had the problem for my own videos. You try to have the video's title preferably add something, or tease maybe to what you're about to see, but at the same time you don't want to be too vague or people probably won't even click it or might even feel misled. "The First Object" doesn't have much of a ring to it.
@NiacinWaterTaffy10 жыл бұрын
sabihatu I would imagine the HI audience has dibs on this channel. Once this channel hits -- I'm gonna guess 100K subscribers, the YT comment section will probably become its usual atrocious self.

That was an awesome video.. was always told it was just a apocryphal tale, so I learnt something today. Was that bit of wood anything before being sent to space? the other objects seem to have some purpose (straight edge is the only one i can identify) but the bit in the space bag just appears to be a cut and polished lump of wood
