From the arcticle they said it's not really an MMO: "SpaceCraft isn't an MMO in the "classical" sense, and Shiro are keen to avoid the association. In practice, it's more about asynchronous than real-time interaction, and while collaborating with others is a focus, Cannasse was at pains to stress that you can do everything in the game by yourself - though you can't play offline." "We put a lot of emphasis on the cooperation aspect," he explained, "and not cooperation in terms of a lot of real time cooperation, like doing dungeons with your friends in World Of Warcraft, but more asynchronous cooperation, in the sense that when you create a corporation together, and you have several space bases, you will have an overall goal as a corporation to improve this or that aspect, develop our base further, build specific buildings or find specific resources."

The real question about Space games is what is it that people find most fun. What is the North Star that brings people back to these games? What is the variety that players should be looking for? I would love to hear the ideas for space games that people would dream of playing For me personally, I love playing in VR. I love being inside the ship. I think Elite Dangerous has the best cockpit experience, but the depth of what you can do in X:Rebirth VR makes it a better overall game - although I find both of them lacking in other respects. If I could create a game - I think I would base it on the idea of Firefly. You have a ship where you have to keep flying. In order to do that, you need a crew that have different personalities (that conflict with you and each other). I love the idea of having to find jobs and stay off the radar of the authorities which means you have to figure out how to avoid them without weapons on the ship itself. Kind of like an Alien Isolation - although you are a ship on the outskirts of the authorities radar - they are not hunting you directly and specifically - unless you do something spectacular to draw their attention in which case they will hunt you down and you are dead - but you are in the wild west of space and that means in order to keep you ship flying and your crew happy and loyal you need work - and those jobs are not always on the right side of your morals... and your crew have different moral standards than you do... I would probably start with From Other Suns (an amazing game if you have never played it) which is kind of FTL in VR. But I would like to be able to also pilot the ship. The Firefly board game also had some interesting mechanics - like a variety of victory conditions. Who do you find to fill your crew? How much do you invest in your ship and crew - and how much do you save for the victory condition? How much risk do you take in the missions? Mind you - I would also love a game based on the Honor Harrington series. Space Naval combat and politics where you have relationships (not particularly romantic) with other officers that you serve with over time (I think Wing Commander actually did that quite well as each of the pilots had distinct personalities). Battles could be life and death (even for the officers you have served with) and where news has to travel by ship - so you have courier ships that have to travel to get you the news of what is happening elsewhere in the game. Getting that information as quickly as you can might be the difference. I even love how the battles in the novels happen. The action is all about the planets - fleets can simply run away, but the infrastructure is what is most important. You have to protect it, which means you can't leave it exposed for someone to simply come in and take - it needs a defense force, And then you muster what you can for a offensive fleet - but you have to protect your supply chain. Because you don't know when you might be attacked (your news is only as good as it is old) you only know what is happening in the system you are in. And just to make sure you don't break the rules of war with a scorched earth policy (Orbital bombardments are illegal) there is a superpower out there than will hammer you into oblivion if you go bloodthirsty. To them, you are a regional conflict.

I'll tell you what it is. They all want to experience the Star Trek experience going where no one has ever gone before exploring the cosmos with the endless possibilities. The sad thing is that no game has really accomplished that yet. And I don't think they are focused doing that. They always end up doing the same old thing again and again. I've started modding an old gem called Star Trek: Bridge Commander, and one thing that really pains me is that, to this day, we really don't have a good game that simulates you sitting in the captain's chair from the first person perspective on a big old honkin' spaceship with a reasonable facsimile of a crew to actually be in charge of. I can build all the 10km long dreadnoughts in Space Engineers I want, but if they feel lonely, they're really just big art pieces. Bridge Commander did a really effective job of making you feel like you were a guy on a spaceship, not the spaceship itself like in a bunch of other games. X4 comes fairly close, but the NPCs are so wooden and the ships are so interchangeable (due to the economic-based gameplay loop) that you really don't feel connected to any of it at the ground level--pardon the pun. Sure, there are multiplayer games that do this, but there aren't any well-made singleplayer experiences that do. At least other than Bridge Commander. That being said, if anyone knows of anything like that in development, please let me know lol.

All modern space games require you dedicate your life to over-complex Economics, Rank and Politics all shove you into working in clans/groups etc. I have been waiting for something simple, that I don't have to book times with online friends or indeed have anything to do with other people. I just want to sit down any time play for a half hour or a full one, then go live real life. They are games...

Ill stick with space engineers for now, well until its spent months having the bugs fixed and actual promised features.

I do hope there will be ship interiors. It's one of the things I love about space games. Even Starfield let you walk around inside your ship and that featured modular ship designs. I am curious about this and will look into it when it actually comes out. Until then, NO PRE ORDER. NO STAR CITIZEN 2 PLEASE.

If you are building your own ship, how is there no cockpit view?
@disky0118 күн бұрын
Eh? It just doesn't have a cockpit view. You build the ship and when it's complete, you fly it in third-person. I'm not sure why this would be confusing.
@Evandir50018 күн бұрын
@@disky01 I guess I'm just assuming it has ship interiors, maybe thats a stretch, I do think lacking a cockpit view is a big no no with space games

@@Evandir500 Oh, yeah, I think it's safe to say that if there's no cockpit view there are no interiors whatsoever.

1:24 What other types of space games are you interested in seeing Obsidian? Genuinely curious. I feel like Space Engineers did large scale space environments the best thus far. The 7 or so planets/moons you get, completely voxel based, not to mention the probable tens if not hundreds of thousands of asteroids to build on too. It is the same coordinates for each instance of the game, but still feels grand. Procedural for sure does lead to a fair bit of repetition by nature. Definitely one to keep an eye on. The "Community driven content" does indicate a likely live service game, which is blehg. Who knows though, maybe it'll be great.

I would say ones focused on exploration. So far the only space games I've had fun exploring in are Outer Wilds and Elite Dangerous, the latter of which is mostly due to the novelty of it being our galaxy.
@ugib837718 күн бұрын
@@harrasika Outer Wilds is one I really need to pick up and play. I have been actively avoiding spoilers for it. Elite was pretty cool too, though I found more joy in the flight sim aspect of it. Reminded me of the old Janes Fighter Combat simulations, but in space.

Market saturated? That's just silly. How many fps, rpg, a-rpg's are there, and they are worried about a location or something else? Should we next complain there are too many games on Earth? Are these the same people who whine about games being clones of other games? "Well, this game is just a Valheim clone, we don't need another Valheim." Yet, requests for features mirror features in other games. Ridiculous. How many times have I seen requests for Satisfactory to have features from Factorio? Bunches. Space games certainly haven't hit my niche desire yet, that is for certain, and I don't mind if they keep trying to get there. I like the variety. Do we need another "soulslike," or "roguelite?" Are we supposed to only have one game per genre? Now you see how silly "market saturation" complaints really are. Some people just like to complain.

Can't wait for the release that'll be buggy as hell and have about 1/4 of the promised features. I bet the reviews will always say things like "Lacks content, lots of bugs, but oh boy does it ever have potential! Too bad the devs haven't been heard from in a few years..."
@maliticus747418 күн бұрын
Trust a "Games Journalist" to be so out of touch with gaming as to claim that the space genre is "over saturated." The only decent space sims on the market atm are X4, which has a UI that makes the one in Necromunda Hired Gun look good, and Astrox Imperium which is being made by a small dev leading to outdated looking UI and graphics. We have Everspace 2 for an arcade style fighter craft shooter, but with little else going for it. One can only shoot the same enemies and get the same loot so many times before it becomes tedious. It is a beautiful game with amazing flight controls, but it only has so much replayablity. In terms of space survival games we have titles like Empyrion Survival and Space Engineers, but both of these titles have major issues in terms of gameplay. Empyrion has some of the worst AI I have seen and the physics engine in Space Engineers leaves A LOT to be desired. Praying to CLANG is often not fun. Starcitizen is a decade long money scam, it has an amazing flight engine but that is about it, and Elite Dangerous most often feels like a single player game that just happens to be online. There are, of course, many MANY other titles that I haven't listed, but my point is that other than games like ES2 and Voidcrew most space sim type games are over 5 years old. There are so few games that let players actually fly a capital ship and of the ones that exist most are almost a decade old at this point. Plenty of small indie dev teams, and even individual devs, are making labor of love space games that have great features to them, but the space genre could really use an injection of a dev team with a AAA publisher budget without the typical nonsense of pushing out an incomplete title. Something like Spacecraft could be amazing for the genre if done well. Also looking forward to seeing how well Jumpship is received.

If they deliver on what they promise then it could be something cool to mess around in from time to time. But absolutely open worlds can lack structure. No quests, no factions, no settlements, nothing to do other than fly around and zap other players.

The market may be oversaturated with space games that all miss the mark in one way or another. To have a full, accurate galaxy like ED, but with all planet types unlike ED, along with a realistic building system, which nobody gets quite right would be a masterpiece game. Oh, and no loading screens, this is 2025, Starfield. We will see if they can pull all the best stuff together.
