If you're still monitoring Will, I'd really like to see a video on creating / importing a VM from an existing Windows desktop to a Synology. I have both a Synology and a QNAP and have been experimenting ( or at least trying to ) with creating VM's on both. I find tremendous confusion in the various file formats... iso, img, vmx, etc, and in the process, whether we should be creating or importing the image in order to get the VM up and running. I did manage to get a VM running on my QNAP before they "upgraded" Virtualization Station to 4.0 Beta. Also, using VMware's free utility also seems to have changed in how it creates its output image file(s). I do find VM's tremendously useful but I've hit a bit of a brick wall.

Not quite sure why Microsoft did not allow setup at the beginning so you the administrator could leave and come back with it installed ready, but the reason may because it so badly designed that it may not be possible to do this, note also windows sill needs to be rebooted over and over too, piss poor. Also the remark about the illusion of having you're privacy is so true and I can see you're frustration. cool video thanks

Hey Will, recently purchased a DS1821+ to migrate from a DROBO 5N and have been following all your tutorials for my home setup. Thanks for taking the time to do them, its really appreciated. Did have three questions after looking at this video I was hoping you could answer. 1. By opening up a network to the internet, does this expose my data in other storage pools to cyber attacks or is it isolated? 2. How do I access my files on the Synology from the VM located on the Synology? Currently its via ethernet from a laptop. How do you establish the link with the VM 3. If i connect my Drobo to the designated port on the Synology and am able to access my Synology Shared folders through the VM, can I use the VM to manage the migration of Data from my Drobo to the Synology in the background? Any feedback is welcome.

Nice Video. Good Job!! I am about to launch adding a VM so I can run ONLY a cloud desktop client to upload my backups to the Cloud - no other apps. The company does not offer a client app to run on synology and have not indicated they will do so. The cloud backup is cheap compared to others and serves my purpose. My goal is to backup content from my PC to the NAS and let the NAS-VM configuration take its time to upload the backup to the cloud as upload speeds are horrible. That way I can shut down my PC at night and let the NAS-VM do its thing. I noticed in other videos they included links to Windows Virtio Drivers. In your video you did not install these additional drivers? Do you think they are needed for my minimal use case? Thanks again for such great videos. You didn't know 3 years ago that newer "+" models would start adopting AMD Ryzen chips. My new DS923+ has one, and it is a big increase in performance. So as of now, you do NOT need an intel CPU to run a VM, but you still need a powerful CPU. I had VMM running on my older DS918+ with 16GB of memory, and that Celeron J3545 was totally unusable. UNUSABLE. In the VM, click on a menu and wait 30 seconds for the menu to appear. Unusable, because the storage was too slow. But I was using an NVMe volume with fast SSDs. Doesn't matter, because the slow storage is because of a weak CPU. I benchmarked the VM disk at 25 MB/sec, not the 2500 MB/sec you'd expect. It's because of a weak CPU and the slow PCIe 2.0 behind it. So if you want to use a VM on your Synology NAS, only try it on plus-series NAS with 8GB+ of memory, and it should be less than 2 years old.

@wfp93783 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. You can also install and run Docker too. I sam doing all this and more on a bare bones 920+. I do suggest you add at least 4GB of RAM, and 2x SSDs for faster access and running of everything, but without these enhancements you still can run them. Regarding the RAM upgrade. Synology parrots Intels page on this CPU, which says it is designed for a maximum of 8GB of RAM. However many have tested and reported running with both 8 and 16GB sticks with no issues. It's your money, know the risks, but you aren't going to destroy your NAS with more RAM. You can always uninstall it easily enough. Though you may lose whatever was cached in the RAM at the time of it "failing" IF it does.
