The most complex thing about a Stage 0 is the OLM itself. The first one took many months at the build site and as I recall a near-equal amount of time after being installed on the legs. I don't know if this time can be shortened based on the earlier experience or not. There was a lot to do.

The only thing that would slow down the next launch is determining the problems with IFT-3 and applying fixes. The GSE seems to be in very good shape after IFT-3 launch needing minimal repairs and possible small upgrades to guard against the same damage happening again. The next ship and booster are pretty much ready to go and assuming there are no major changes required after completing analysis of IFT-3, 6 weeks sounds perfectly reasonable.

I am surprised that tower 2 isn't 10-20 metres taller, given plans to grow the stack Also, that the QD arm height isn't repositionable
@Ralphie419
@Ralphie419 2 ай бұрын
I thought they'd make the tower taller too. But making the QD arm adjustable in height would be a true cryogenic engineering challenge. Accordian-fold fuel piping? no. Telescoping insulated piping that doesn't leak regardless of temperature changes? probably not. A huge elbow along the exterior of the tower with rotary joints? maybe. Spacex could probably figure it out, but hopefully, there won't be frequent changes in the booster height.

@realulli
@realulli 2 ай бұрын
IMHO, the main issue for rapid reusability is the availability of fuel. One Starship launch uses about 4500 tons of propellant. Let's assume each tanker truck can carry 30 tons of propellant (I think I'm overestimating here), that would work out to 150 trucks per launch. How long does it take to unload one of these? I think the logistics for operating a fleet of Starships is going to be a challenge.

Amazing how much Neutron looks like the Blofeld spacecraft in "You Only Live Twice". Back in those days as a kid, I thought it was stupid for a rocket to land on Earth by thrust alone. You're wrong about the tower. My brother is an operations manager with Archer, a drilling company. They provided the drawworks for the first tower and he sent me this message recently. "Mark Robertson has another Purchase Order from spacex to extend launch pad tower by an additional 400ft so away to design sheaves/drill line/engineer drawworks to take all the additional drill line for the extended tower." Looks like tower 2 (3?) is to be extended for next gen Starship. Tower 2 (3?) will be taller.

If I were Spcex, I will do the second OLIT as basic as possible to try the catch of the ships: no table, no connector for fuelling... So, it won´t be used for launching, only for catching. The simple it is, the less can be destroyed in case of failure of the catching. Only after a good amount of successes, then it can be upgraded for regular launching.

@simongeard4824

No, but then, that's not a blocker for the next flight. Much like Falcon 9 development, anything that happens to the booster after stage separation is non-critical, so while they'll want to solve it as soon as possible, they can afford to lose a few boosters in the attempt.

So I have been thinking that SpaceX should use their heat tiles they use on the ship and place them on the quick release. They could actually attach them to the sides of the quick release and the cladding they put the steel pieces on the launch stand at ground zero. So many uses for the heat tiles at ground zero!

Yet i fear the heat tiles will pose a huge challenge. Im thinking they will test other means of heat protection.
@Ralphie419
@Ralphie419 2 ай бұрын
The heat tiles on the ship experience very different forces than what you are suggesting. They do get vibrated during liftoff and experience strong, but smooth, airflow up through max Q, and then on re-entry there is compression of air ahead of them and great heat from the resulting plasma, which they are designed to take -- but any tiles on the launch pad would undergo extreme buffeting by the chaotic exhaust of the 33 raptors. They could stand the heat, but would get torn off by the turbulent "blow torch." Remember the huge pieces of concrete and the vast quantity of sand lofted by that blowtorch at less than full power!

I still dont understand how they can call it a " mishap" when its a r&d mission thats highly likely to fail
@simongeard4824
@simongeard4824 2 ай бұрын
Because "mishap" basically means "deviated from flight plan". According to the plan filed with the FAA, the booster was supposed to reach the water intact - instead, it exploded on the way down. Likewise, the ship was supposed to impact the ocean in one piece - again, it didn't. Two things which didn't happen in accordance with the agreed plan, and which therefore need investigation. But as Felix notes, that's not such a big deal, since SpaceX care more about the results of that investigation than the FAA do.
@fosstera
@fosstera 2 ай бұрын
any time a flight or spaceflight activity under the jurisdiction of the FAA does not go exactly to plan, the FAA calls it a mishap. Per the FAA's definitions of a "mishap," Starship did suffer a mishap. They do not distinguish between experimental or operational flights in this manner

Honestly I'm kind of surprised they're not going to be making a taller tower to begin with considering future plans

They need a faster lauch cadance if they want to even remotely meet their deadlines. Faster launches also means faster iteration. In any case I can't wait for more!

Thank You - YOU ROCK. The Launch Site, MUST BE ABLE to withstand launches WITHOUT having to do regular rework at every launch. The components MUST BE OVERDESIGNED /over engineered to be very robust. Just my thoughts.

Will stage 0-Tower 2 be higher since it seems that starship and booster has grown on Tower 1?

RIP. Mr Stafford, sure, I would take the space plane to go to work, but first an orbital flight around the world, to start the day. Isn't that a great experience? Thanks for the update, Felix.
