Felix, not sure if you read these comments or not but in case I have a suggestion for Elon and SpaceX. Providing they haven't already thought of this of course. I would suggest constructing a separate recovery tower apart from the launch towers. This would ensure the launch tower and supporting equipment such as the tank farm would not be damaged or destroyed in case of an accident during landing. A recovery tower would be less costly because it would not need all the piping and other hardware needed for a launch. The booster or Starship could be recovered safely away from vital equipment and easily transported to the hanger for refurbishing. In the event of a crash or other problem the launch tower or towers would not be affected and there would be no delay in another launch. If on the other hand if the launch tower were damaged or destroyed in a landing, everything would be put on hold for months or longer while repairs were made. Just an idea but you never know unless you ask.

Great vods, on space debris, why don't we set up a space station that is used to recycle space debris, then it can be sent back down to earth or maybe we send it to our moon base, just a thought.
@antonioramirez3676
@antonioramirez3676 3 ай бұрын
I was about to say it's more likely they collect the debris and reuse and recycle it up in orbit, most debris is satellites and such which is usually metal, electronics,etc. Plus there's a high chance a orbital station becomes a priority while they prep starship for the endgame mars mission after starship successfully reaches orbit and re-entry, u can refuel, and park starships up there after initial launch which can decrease cost PLUS you need somewhere for preliminary decontamination and such, and a lot of recycled debris can be used as material

Earth, Space, Anywhere, it doesn’t matter, just use it and toss it out for someone else to take care of, we’re pitiful. I think it’s been proven that the only way to deal with this is to charge for it. Make everyone that sends anything into space, charge a fee to be put into a cleanup fund and those companies can charge their clients for the fee. Make it so it’s profitable to cleanup after ourselves and someone will start a company to do just that, Elon, are you listening?

I was doing a thought experiment the other day on dealing with orbital debris. Getting a machine in orbit which has very limited use to de-orbit other orbiting bodies does not make financial sense. You need something that can be used nearly indefinitely. For orbital adjustments, gyro packs are perfect. In the proper configuration, they can be used to de-saturate each other (Scott Manley explains the physics very well). So, for changing orbit perameters, all you need is electricity. No problem. Next issue is the energy to de-orbit something in a timely and controlled manor. If it takes too long to slow it, the insertion point is less and less known. Ideally, everything would need to drop into the pacific ocean, or unrealistically, into a large lake to be salvaged/recycled. The orbital gyros just would not make sufficient thrust to obtain the delta V quickly. The best solution I could envision is somewhat like a kid's toy. A grabber on the end of a long compression spring, with a wench cable down the middle. The wench would compress the spring, turning it into a seeming solid structural member. The machine would maneuver to the debris and either grab it, or just get the grabber near it if there are factors that prevent positive contact. At the appropriate time, a latch would release the grabber end of the spring, thus slowing the debris. This would have the added benefit of accelerating the machine so it can reach a higher orbit to prepare for the next piece of debris. The grabber could even be equipped with a solid pan or net, either being consumable or not consumed. The spring would not need to be a coil of wire. A multistage gas or hydraulic cylinder could be used, allowing for adjustments of the rate of acceleration. I have many other ideas for this design, but this covers the very basics.

Maybe future space missions should include a surcharge for debris removal. Kind of like a superfund. I'd love to see a future debris removal using aerogel capture for microdebris. It's an idea that I saw many years ago, but we're kind of in a golden age where it could be made to happen relatively easily and cheaply.
@jeechun
@jeechun 3 ай бұрын
Or a docking plate for helping future debris removal - if needed. Beside the aerogel stuff there is an idea of releasing gas in front of the debris to slow it down, but all these methods needs very precise flights of the removal satellite, otherwise it could generate even more debris by colliding to the debris part.
@kstricl
@kstricl 3 ай бұрын
@@jeechun Docking plate could be a refueling port as well for satellites with useful life left. You can guarantee some of the debris removal though by using elliptical orbits with the clean up satellites, such that perigee slows them down each orbit and guarantees they de-orbit. Ideal of course would be latching and planning the entry to go into the main part of the ocean. Mission planning definitely needs to be done carefully.

I am guessing that Spacex's priority is to get just the second tower up and running on it's own. A launch pad to go with it can come at a later date. A tower on it's own will be capable of catching a booster, and for the first couple of attempts it would make sense in not having a pad below it that could get damaged if the catch attempt failed. For catching tests the less hardware in the danger area the better. Once they get the catching process sorted, they can then put the time and money into building a second pad. If a catch is successful they can simply put the booster down onto a transport stand. A standalone catch tower makes good sense.

Water spray doesn't just dissipate heat. Water spray will absorb accoustic shock. Heating steel reinforced concrete doesn't break loose large chunks of concrete, which are then accelerated by the engine thrust. The sonic jackhammer that occurs at launch can disintegrate concrete. Water spray at sufficient levels decrease this acoustic shock. Sound can destroy when it comes from a symphony of Raptor engines at full thrust. There is a reason why Saturn V had a flame trench filled with a deluge of water spray at launch. Even the shuttle, and SLS use this method to reduce damage to the launch facilities. Airborn water spray increases atmospheric density near the engines, allowing for better absorbtion of transatmospheric kinetic energy. Combine acoustic shock, with millions of pound of thrust, you get a shrapnel storm, even without the heat. A flame trench allows the thrust to take a less sharp turn under the engines, carrying more kinetic energy and heat away from the recess under the rocket. SpaceX has been fortunate till now, but they have had to adress the lack of these basic accouterments on their launch stand.

I am confident that this launch will be a great success. I simply cannot find a way to be pessimistic with the progress of the Space X program...besides, the 3rd times a charm😂

Building the tower seems inevitable. My question is seeing the tower sections all ready I wonder if they are building the Launch Table somewhere behind closed doors? It seemed to take forever to build the Launch Table. It is the most complicated piece.
