SpaceX intentionally removed several tiles to measure the temperature of the Ship's hull during re-entry.
@JosefTorkelsen7 ай бұрын
I don’t think they aren’t installing those missing tiles to test if the ship can survive without them. The likelihood of existing tiles falling off during flight is so high that they will test that even if they don’t want to. Starting with missing tiles just wouldn’t make sense. If they can go a flight with all tiles staying on, then test edge cases. Starting with some off and losing some more wouldn’t prove anything.

LOL, I bet the astronauts crapped themselves when the engine stated thinking the ship blew up. That is the greatest issue with failed launches: the psychological trauma.

I can't believe they would deliberately go up with tiles missing already. that's as dumb as the first launch with no water deluge system.
@spacegamer857 ай бұрын
Actually its cost effective. IFT4 is expendable and SpaceX learns more from failure than success. What they hope to learn is how critical heat shield tile quantity and location among other things. I am not saying SpaceX wants another RUD but they will take all the data and learn from it. Hoping for a double controlled splash down.
@angrydoggy91707 ай бұрын
Musk needs to keep the program going and has to show some progress, otherwise the funding might just dry up. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they deliberately let it burn up because they know it’s not ready for a controlled landing. I’m guessing they’re going for a controlled decent keeping starship oriented the right way.

There's no need to rush it. If they are just getting around to getting the tiles in order, they should wait until they are all there, secure and tested. It doesn't bode well for any kind of re-entry at close to orbital velocity with missing/shaky tiles. The plasma will make quick work of the exposed steel and.. kaboom goes starship, again..
@frankmcgowan94577 ай бұрын
Maybe they want to test the durability of the stainless steel structure... how critical are the tiles, anyway? It would be good to know.
@angrydoggy91707 ай бұрын
@@frankmcgowan9457Pretty pointless to test that using a rocket. You can calculate all that and test it in a lab if you really wanted to check the numbers.

@itheuserfirst31867 ай бұрын
Um, no. Not a chance.
@frankmcgowan94577 ай бұрын
@@itheuserfirst3186 The chance might be slim but not zero... A "standard" Starship could easily take an Alpaca lander to the moon without waiting for HLS... if Alpaca can do the job. Building a moon base will be much easier if HLS brings an electric D11 bulldozer with a cab... clearing/grading a building site should be about the same as here and will require similar tools... The dozer may not be required right away but it _will_ be required at some point.

Sure. I've proposed that already. Make vehicles of every size and fly them all; each will be needed for some mission at some time. Alpaca would make a great long range shuttle for lunar point to point transport...
