SpaceX's Massive Changes on Starship V2 just HUMILIATED the entire rocket industry!
The evolution of Starship is something anyone could have guessed. Yet, when it officially appears, everyone is still surprised by how SpaceX is upgrading their giant spacecraft. Indeed, as new Starship 2.0 hardware has just been spotted, the upgrades are truly astonishing.
In today's episode of Great SpaceX, we will delve into these insane upgrades and what they mean for the future of space exploration. So, if you're ready, let's get started.
Before we get to the updates, let’s take a look at some of the first steps related to the V2 prototypes in recent times.
Firstly, in early April, a part of the Starship ring (likely V2) appeared, showcasing many differences from previous versions. Then, in mid-May, a flap was shipped to Starbase, clearly marked as part of Block 2. By mid-July, we witnessed the impressive appearance of the nosecone and payload compartment. Recently, the B15 forward domes also made an appearance.
SpaceX's Massive Changes on Starship V2 just HUMILIATED the entire rocket industry!
With the goal of producing six V2 prototypes this year, we can expect production to continue at a rapid pace. Other parts will likely become more visible in the coming months.
Now, let's delve into the changes that have been revealed.
As previously mentioned, the nosecone will feature some notable modifications. The first significant change is in the flap system. Elon Musk has revealed that the flap's position will shift towards the leeward side. Previously, the flaps were placed symmetrically, creating a 180-degree angle, but they will now create an angle of about 140 degrees. This adjustment will help the flap avoid direct impacts during re-entry.
Additionally, it appears that the flap has been moved closer to the top of the Ship. This change will likely enhance navigation by pushing the focus of control forward, balancing it with the aft flap.
SpaceX's Massive Changes on Starship V2 just HUMILIATED the entire rocket industry!
In terms of shape, the new flap is smaller and more pointed. The length of the top and bottom edges is longer, while the tail edge is shorter. The effectiveness of this design can be debated, so feel free to discuss your thoughts in the comment section.
The next change is in the heat shield system. On the new nosecone, the heat shields have been extended to the leeward side. This extension provides better protection for the vehicle and serves as a backup protection solution for the flap and the header tank inside.
Moreover, the thickness of the flap seems to have been reduced to about half of the current flap's thickness. Since the flap has been moved to the leeward side for increased safety, its mass can be reduced to optimize the Starship's design. This reduction in mass should make the flap more flexible, thereby improving navigation efficiency.

Well, smaller tiles with more pins, is an attempt at better more secure attachment... Hopefully it works, but I'm the worst tile skeptic... The tiles on the top side of the nose, has me hopeful they will reduce hull angle to more horizontal and get some glide ratio instead of trying to fly sideways. The ships are looking nice now days as fabrication work, The welders have gotten it together obviously. Fore flap design reminds me of Saloon doors... And they are slabbed, kinda clunky for something meant to fly. Ships need a couple portlights forward for eyes, and a smiley face painted on for the kids watching... Maybe a toothy smiley face? A big grin for Bezos to have to look at and grimace about his Turtle production velocity... Not sure about the tower catching, but it is an interesting experiment... I would have probably designed it more passive, like hanging up a pay phone... Slapping arms could beat dents in the ship's sides... And That linear shock system atop the arms is strange, I would have designed the shock absorbers into the catch points of the ships. I'm glad we will soon see Raptor 3"s in action, its been a long wait since the Raptor one Spaghetti Monster engines... I wanna hear other companies comments after R-3's are operational... They are obviously way better designs... See if they try to Buffoon about them, or get to work on cleaning up their garbage engines... Its alot of fun watching Starship progress with SpaceX's: "Fly it & Try it" iterations progress methods... And FAA and other petty tyrants are making themselves look bad to the public... Bureauceatic Constipation at its finest. I just wish all the other companies could increase developement and production velocity like SpaceX so we had more Horses to watch in the race. It is entertaining though with NASA and Boeing screw ups... SpaceX is putting them all out of business if they dont change their ways.

Yes, Gary. They all seem to be "caught with their pants down" and are panicking in a small sense. I very much like to compare this to when GM released the Buick Regal Grand National, a V6 Turbocharged mid size coupe from the 80's, it was 2 seconds faster in the quarter mile than the production muscle cars of the era, which had other automakers going into a tailspin which they merely maintained their loss of control rather than compete..
@garylester3976
@garylester3976 29 күн бұрын
@@MurphyRiddle-bl4cp Yeah, Things were getting pretty absurd there until SpaceX and Raptor 2, and now with Raptor 3, and Elon booting up serious production, most of the rest look like hobby level endeavours... I like what Rocket Lab, and Stoke Space are doing. at least more innovative, Blue Origin looks to be making a nice rocket, But their Motors are Raptor 1 level over complicated, and their production rate is Glacial... I think Elon is great, and SpaceX definitely hard working, but a skeptic of Starship for practicality reasons and limits. But I do attempt to feed in ideas to help them, and have seen many used. Boeing is a sad story to me, as I had a favorite uncle who was an engineer there in the 60's. And NASA is a soap opera now... Sad, having watched the first Moon Landing live, and then having great expectations for the shuttle, and then watching things go downhill from there with a dawning realization that engineering was losing touch with practicality. Got pretty obvious it had gone Academic and Urban. No longer the guys who grew up on farms or did things in post WW2 culture. Its a different cultute now but Elon and SpaceX are the new dawn. Elon at least understands the limits of academic credentalling. And willing to Schittcan those too arrogant to listen to the Peasants... And the smaller startups are satisfyingly creative. I think they are gonna run over Jeff with their cleats on... SpaceX may get lucky on some issues I see with Starship, but maybe not, and maybe other startups will see what I see... I wish them all well, have hopes, And in the Space forums daily.

@@garylester3976 they need to fly sideways to protect the engines that’s why the tiles don’t need cover the entire ship and no shielding required for those engines saving massive amount of both weight and refurb time. The only way to significantly change the angle of descent is by major changes to the overall design that would reduce carrying capacity and increases costs as a knock on effect. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@garylester3976
@garylester3976 29 күн бұрын
@@benethoukes8519 Dont feel bad! I knew about that logic, I just happen to disagree with it. Have explained before many times in writs. The problem is you get an effect like a key holing bullet at long range, it slows down yes, but also goes into a parabolic ballistic arc, and drops at an increasing rate. which means its going too fast for lower air density and resulting friction. Also more air resistance on the tiles. So you lose tiles and melt off flappers.. and have a burnt derelect by the time you get engines lit and do flip manouver and landing burn. But if instead of flying sideways, you flew it at say 5°-15° from horizontal, you would get more lift than braking even in thinner upper atmosphere, a much longer flight, and reduce velocity turning it into lift, and use distance efficiently, and stay higher longer, and be going slower, and not tear off tile or melt things... Flight profile, its why Space plane designs were developed, they just havent designed in enough lift yet to get to the point tiles or coatings heat shields are safe and effective. And Spacex is trying to do a plunge re-entry profile, like a capsule with tile instead of an ablative. supposedly to get better reusability... They went the wrong way... And arent useing the lift that they could, and arent changing their design or their concept, and trying to adapt by changining tiles and do other expedient cobbling. Which may not be enough... I think its all flawed concepts... And a waste of time... Not to mention money... They'll figure it out eventually, and have to change some other parameter besides tile thickness, size, material, or fasteners. So far its been over 3 years pointing this stuff out... I suspect I will win in the end. Logic often beats cobbling in desperation. Its why we have brains, make for less work and higher survival odds, works for ships too!

At this point due to the incredible V3 engine and delays in the V1 test program ( Thanx FAA), I think that Space X should just skip the V2 and go straight to the V3. The V2 engines could be sold as since Russia has effectively removed itself as a rocket engine supplier, there is a distinct hole that Space X could fill.

when are they gonna have a cockpit area in the starship, that is what I want to know?
@straighttalk2069
@straighttalk2069 29 күн бұрын
They don't actually need a cockpit. Nowadays computers fly space ships like Dragon and starship. So-called pilots just input coordinates and cameras provide views of the outside world.

Hahaha the time it Takes FAA to approve flights who knows when V2 will fly in meantime China will have theirs finished and flown heaps

Well if the FAA doesn't shut the whole program down I would love to see mass production and testing.. but wait u said wait till production of the v2s are completed than testing... But why? Are u trying to imply to slow starship developments down and give blue origin the reigns? Are u nuts? Personally I like things as they are but honestly all the hype surrounding who will be at who blue origin or SpaceX crap is for the birds SpaceX already proved this with falcon 9 falcon heavy and starship flight 4 falcon 9 a has succeeded expectations already with near almost 400 successful in total launches 2 failures and 1 partial failure 3 successful launches with falcon heavy and 1 successful test flight and landing with flight 4 despite a a couple issues with the end of the landing and a tiny set back with 1 engine mishap in the beginning of the launch and 1 mishap engine out upon landing still it didn't go boom but successful launch and landing nonetheless.. mind everyone that starship launches are just testing and data only not an actual full blown system yet but they are 80 to 85 percent progress near 90 percent at most .. but still they almost have a complete system..

I don’t like to think about it in terms of humiliation, but I do hope Elon’s example on how to run a rocket company rubs off on other companies. I think Jeff Bezos will be increasingly more involved with Blue Origin in being more hands on. They have the resources, just not the right mindset.

I think S-26 is done. Elon doesn't seem to be a sentimental guy. I don't think it will be a museum piece. Boeing need to throw in the towel on the Starliner. Bring the astronauts home both at once. Or one at a time on Dragon. Just do it. Them let's sort this mess out how we are going to deal with them. Starliner is finished.

Stupid. Its a damn PROTOTYPE still...not a compleated system. Putting payloads in space is the least problem and as is right now, they can put 80-100tonnes up there. They dont HAVE cargo yet since the system is not finished and have therefore not put anything into orbit yet.
