As a former ViaSat customer Starlink has been a game changer for me. It's nice to not to be reduced to dial-up speeds for half of each month. I now can even watch KZbin without reducing the speed to 144p. I also pay $50 less a month then did with ViaSat so the equipment has paid for itself. I was also able drop dish network saving another $130 a month and stream my TVs . It's nice paying less and getting much more.

I moved to Maine just below the Canadian border about 4 years ago. It's a small town in the mountains with almost no good internet options. When we moved in we had Hughes and realized within the first month it wasn't going to work. Even uncapped it was slow and after hitting their caps in the first week it felt like I'd gone back to dial-up. We tried to compliment that with 4G wireless data options from both AT&T and Verizon but neither provided enough bandwidth for a household let alone a simple work conference solution. We got our Starlink about a year and a half ago, around the same time as I think you did. It has changed our situation up here and I REALLY want to thank you for all the amazing information you've provided. We too dealt with faulty dongles, lackluster support and tons of questions that were left unanswered and if it wasn't for your due diligence I wouldn't have some explanations as to why things as are as they are. Your hard work is greatly appreciated by those of us in these situations Joseph, keep up the good fight ;)

I'm like you...very rural with crappy Telcom DSL service. About 3 years ago I got Viasat as a faster option. Fall of 2023 I switched to Starlink shortly after it became available in my half of Texas. I lovel it. It even works in rainstorms. Viasat would usually go down, and the latency was originally about 700ms but eventually became around 3500ms...way to long. Starlink is giving me 30-60ms...with much faster speads. Great service.

Wow you had them since they started as wild blue. I started installing them when they were exede then later changed to their corporate name viasat. I loved doing the job, meeting different people going all over different places towns and doing the install. I was always honest with my customers before the install was started on the performance of the satellite service the speed, ping etc.. to avoid customer frustration and pissed off calls in the afternoon after data allowance. Hate that viasat never really took the latency, data & price issue seriously and now will suffer for it with starlink and massive co-op fiber rollout. Made good memories though.

Elon has done so so much good things improving the quality of human living not just in US but all over the World. Ukraine wouldnt have the slightest chance of standing up to Russia if it wasnt for Starlink. Its just super crazy how Americans hate Elon for no reasons at all. If it wasnt for Elon US would still be dependent on Russia for space travel and rocket engines, to name just a few good deeds Elon has done to US. Americans should respect Elon and be grateful that he's on US side. What if he suddenly changes side to China??

@rova33089 ай бұрын
You could just install an 80 foot tower, you know the likes amateur radio stations use to mount their antennas. The skinny slender tall metal trusses kind. You mount starlink dish up top and woila, problem solved. But if you wanna wait till 20k or 30k satellites in space thats fine too but its gonna be a hell of a long wait.

Yes to both questions. I had Wild Blue satellite service ten years ago. It felt like everyone was sharing the same satellite. My DSL was better, but ran at 5% of the speed folks in town can get. By comparison, Starlink rocks and is only getting better. It's 1/3 to 1/6 the speeds you are getting, but it still beats anything I've ever gotten before.

I asked around people in my area which internet providers they were using before Starlink became available. There were only two providers back then; HugesNet and ViaSat. People were just NOT happy with those two providers. These people were also getting charged for over-usages every month. So, I waited for the Starlink and am happy I did. People generally don't like to be tie-down with contracts. Great video!!

Was a Hughes Net customer for 9 years prior to Starlink. For 9 years we paid $160/month with a 50gbit data cap (which we seldom used because the speeds where to slow to stream video). Until 2 yrs ago that was our only option. Starlink has been a true blessing! Hughes Net at best was never better then 40Mps down and 3Mps up with an average latency of 700 to 800ms. Starlink 2yrs ago wasn't always the best in Prescott, Az. Seldom saw 100Mps up and 10Mps down with latencies around 40-100ms. BUT, never complained because Starlink on it's worst day was a far cry better than Hughes Net. Presently, with Starlink, consistently see between 100 to 250Mbps down. Upload speeds are still not much better than 10 to 15Mbps but acceptable for us. For us in rural Arizona, Starlink has been a game changer......might even have to give up Direct TV! Thank you, Joe, for the Starlink playlist! You helped better our Starlink experience and truly appreciate your efforts!!!

To comment on the dish being straight up….I have our Gen 2 flat mounted in a Star-Mount base on our van. Depending on how “level” we are it’s straight up. Works flawlessly. However, we do have a lot more sub second micro outages than if it’s oriented properly. I work in IT and absolutely need a fast reliable connection. I expect it’s only going to get better from here. We have the advantage of being close to 10’ off the ground as well which helps getting around obstacles that may interfere if your Gen 3 in on the ground. Love the channel and all your content. ❤

Not needing to point the dish is why v3 doesn't have a motor drive, heck, many people are already deleting or disabling their servos now and mounting them flat. I have been on StarLink 15 months with a 300GB/mo terrestrial RV hotspot as a backup (for same price as StarLink) as sometimes the StarLink TP-Link made router goes on the freak. I am going to replace it with a power supply and another router when it really takes a dump. I have replaced cable, that is not the problem and disabled the heater (which we don't need in the southern hemisphere), it just connects at 100mb and complains and then sometimes doesn't connect at all when the online dish status is fine when checked with a working Internet connection. The phone company failed to replace our underground line for 9 months (subcontractor failure) and we are rather remote and there is no cable Internet here either as an option.

J....you are 100% correct on every point anout Hughesnet. As a former technician doing Hughesnet repairs, I can review the company's history and point out where it began to fail, and was bound to fail. When HN changed to a cheap-labor model, laying off many competent American engineers, and insourced foreign workers, HN jumped off the cliff. I witnessed the downsides often, and it began a cancer growing throughout its way of operating. For years they knew their system was broken, but told no one. We technicians were trying to figure out what to fix, but unbeknownst to us, almost never was the problem hardware related. The field technicians were effectively consigned to convincing the customer nothing was wrong with their equipment. Guess how? Needlessly replace every bit of equipment at their residence... every single time. How this situation for HN ended up the way it did could be written as a textbook of bad management decisions, where companies go wrong. They are numerous for Hughesnet, and the biggest loser was, of course, the customer.

I like the security of being able to rely on Starlink in an emergency such as an earthquake or other natural disaster that may knock out ground-based infrastructure. Aside from that I also take it with me when going on road trips or camping as a means of connecting to the world at remote locations where cellular coverage is nonexistent or spotty, movies in the trailer at night streamed from Netflix for example and the kids love it.

During my time as a Hughesnet customer, I was asked to respond to surveys (after many struggles with their so called technical support) asking how I rated Hughesnet service. Each time, my response was "Better than nothing, but not by much." When I was finally able to escape their clutches, the nice gal on the phone asked me what they could do to keep my business. Really? I guess those surveys are about as worthwhile as any of those large corporations' values. You are so right - 🤬AT&T, Sprint, TWN, and Hughesnet were all so disappointing in my rural environment. All over promised and under delivered 🤬. SpaceX Starlink is the first to come through as expected (and improving).

If these companies were smart, they would be in talks to merge with Starlink while they still have something to offer. Imagine if Starlink could either retrofit the existing HughesNet satellites with laser datalinks or replace the HughesNet satellites in their geosynchronous orbit locations using that one idea that was discussed where the low orbit satellites communicate with an outer orbit satellite with lasers to reduce the number of hops (and possibly some distance) before beaming to a local satellite and then beamed to the final destination. If Starlink could get those rights for such a modification, they could potentially be spending significantly less just to add a module onto the existing satellites and that would also potentially allow for the HughesNet service to remain operational for the customers who might be have better signal through them or just don't want to switch yet.

I worry if the satellite Internet companies goes out of business and everybody moves to starlink that it is going to overwhelm the system. It happened with centuryLink where I live, it was a lot more reliable when it was new after they installed a new cable in my area. Overtime, it has slowed down and now have constant outages. Only kept CenturyLink as a back up, sometimes it's not Worth it.

So this isn't relevant to the topic being discussed other then to say my experience has been pretty damn decent I've been able to play games, stream movies. I haven't uploaded content yet but I hwve downloaded some games and that's been a whole day process for video games but it's still fantastic over Viasat and Hughs. Anyway way what I eanted to say was I recently just had a BAD storm and sad to say my Starlink didn't survive I thought Starlink wouldn't cover it but I decided to ask anyway and GREAT NEWS! They credited my account for the month and their sending me a replacement kit free of charge and providing a return label. This was a very unexpected and pleasant surprise! I've had my dishy for 9 months now so not very long but I'm very happy with it still. It's not perfect yet but it's damn close.

I had Hugesnet a decade ago. Absolute garbage. The latency is horrible, and the data cap would go out in 3 weeks. Then I got AT&T phone line. Better, but still dogshit. I put money down on my Starlink 18 months before I got it. I'm still loving it. I live in the boonies in south GA.

Had Viasat for 8 years prior to getting Starlink about a year and half now. Hughes NOT and Viasat are going out of business and sure wouldn’t buy any stock if you put them both together they can’t compete with Starlink!!! GAME OVER!!!

Starlink doesn't have to deliver 100 up, 20 down to everyone connected to Starlink. All they have to do is insure those speeds to the Rural Broadband service areas. Starlink can do that right now by simply prioritizing service of 100 up, 20 down for those customers. Of course getting everyone's service above that threshold is preferable, but complete compliance with the mandate is doable right now, never mind 2025.

I'd like to see data on cable Internet subscribers and what starlink has done to their business. I switched from charter so I think they're even competitive with everything except fiber. My boss just got starlink at his business because charter wanted thousands just to get it put up.

I don't see ViaSat going away, only their commercial internet side. As someone that spent 20 in Air Force communications, what many people don't realize is that ViaSat is a HUGE defense contractor and makes most of the network encryption devices used in DoD data centers among others. They also own many military data link protocols and the military is heavily invested in their SATCOM systems (for now). But yes, I do agree the commercial side will die a slow death for them, but honestly they make most of their money from DoD anyway.

Viasat with there high prices and caps within 6months you could afford Starlink I didn't have to pay my contract was up.Getting fiber they put line in street just wanting for them to complete connection

The GEO latency delay is something that Hughesnet and Viasat cannot overcome. It’s physics. But. They will not go out of business. They will shift to enterprise and government customers.

The good thing Starlink has an ecosystem, and if Elon was smart he should buy a fiber optic network company that needs to be upgraded, I would love to see a SpaceX fleet of van parking around the corner.

Why are there still holes in the coverage in the USA? I'm right in the middle of a no service hole in far west Texas, near Fort Davis, there are no government installations (that I know of) nearby, I know that many of my neighbors got residential when it first came out then they locked us out with no explanation. If you look, it's a tiny little spot with no coverage, why???????
@WrethaOffGrid9 ай бұрын
PS, I'm in a major internet hole anyhow, our only options in my neighborhood is Hughesnet, Viasat, and a slow but expensive wireless local service. Cell phones don't even work out here. I'm absolutely wanting to get Starlink asap.
@brucecardwell58099 ай бұрын
Might consider that the UT Observatory is in your neck of the woods, Starlink might be not overflying that airspace to keep the astronomy folks happy. Just a guess.
@WrethaOffGrid9 ай бұрын
@@brucecardwell5809 I would accept that, except for the fact that my neighbors (including across the street from me) are using Starlink residential (from the first time around) and if you look at the coverage map, basically everywhere except where my neighborhood is, has coverage, including where the observatory is located. Fort Davis which is closer to the observatory has open coverage, just not the tiny dot where I live. I'm just trying to find out why. Thanks for your reply though :)

The funniest thing I saw the other day was about a new Geo satellite company called Astranis, and the video was titled “Starlink vs. Astranis” as if there was any competition. Why in the hell would any company waste the time and money, and they talk about it like it’s some new innovation. All of the comments were just bashing it because of the latency. In the video they even said that you would never want to do any gaming, or anything like that. The only advantage is that they said that it would be cheap. What good is cheap internet, if it’s not good for anything 😂

As long as VS and HN remain in a high geo-stationary orbit they will never be able to compete with the mature version of SL. The end. However, for the remaining and dwindling user bases the speeds should improve so...partial win, right? I was able to get out of my HN contract 9-10 years ago by berating their Germantown office directly with some data facts and they canceled the contract. Back then the FAP limit (haha) was a paltry 140 Mb/day! We've since dropped Dish, 6 months ago and stream everything. Our data usage is usually around 1.6 to 2 TB each month. I was even offered the chance to get 1Gb down/1Gb up fibre here and turned it down. I like being able to have access to the internet, wifi calling, etc...even when we're on generator. Can't do that with fibre or cable. /happy SL user for 3 years now.

I had the Liberty Pass Viasat account where you got 12 gigs of high speed data and then were slowed down for an unlimited data amount. This worked for me and the price was low. I did mainly file downloads and not streaming, so this worked well. I blew through the 12 gigs in one or two days lol I don't think the Liberty Pass plan is available anymore. I was lucky to have the cheaper non-wireless router account as well. I don't think they offer that anymore either. I used Viasat for heavy file downloads and my 3G for browsing. I am so glad to have Starlink. I am paying less for more now.

Someone needs to acquire AT&T. They are a company whose time has come to go. It would be a good buy for Starlink? Or Apple Inc.?
@Kline20009 ай бұрын
I agree these two satellite ISP's are grasping at straws and slapping lipstick on a pig. We had Viasat for several years at 12 down and 120 a month. It went out all the time in bad weather and data capped at 250 gb. Getting Starlink allowed us to finally watch 4k, automate our home and bring us into the modern age. Day and night between services at the same cost. Elon constantly innovates and improves his service while other companies stagnate. In my opinion Starlink is a no BS service, reliable, trustworthy and constantly improving. We live in rural Oklahoma with huge trees all around. No problems with the service. More than happy customers.

From Hughesnet to Starlink almost 2 years now. No comparison. FCC could buy those 60,000 people in North Carolina Starlink. That would save us taxpayers a ton of m9ney versus their plan.

These geostationary satellite providers may yet survive by tanking their citizen subscriber base and offering consistent high-bandwidth service to specialist corporations that do not have low latency constraints for their use case.
@EdKy1019 ай бұрын
GEO Satellites are fine for streaming or browsing the internet but not much else; and the data caps imposed by Hughes and the other provider just seal the coffin and make them a non-viable alternative to Starlink. 🤷♂️ Edit: And those damn contracts 👎 Never again will I deal with ANY company that forces me into a contract with cancellation fee bs.
