I'm a big SpaceX fan (maybe slightly less so of Musk, depending on day and tweets). I hope SpaceX and Musk understand that they need to get this one mostly right. If they don't, it will increase resistance to further tests. If there's a big deflagration that gets tied to negligence, Starship could be over.

Fuel slosh was a serious issue for Apollo Lunar Modules, as well. On both Apollos 11 and 12, the attitude control RCS jets seemed to fire an awful lot -- Pete Conrad talked about it a lot during his descent, saying things like "Boy, it's really giving it the kazoozy with the RCS!" The LM's fuel and oxidizer tanks let the fuel slosh quite a bit, and once it got moving it kept torquing the whole vehicle. When NASA decided this was a problem that needed a fix, the next LM -- LM-7, aka Aquarius -- already had its tanks installed, so a set of anti-slosh baffles were inserted into the tanks and welded in through the plumbing outlets, and all LMs after LM-7 got tanks that already had baffles installed. On LMs 8 and beyond, they completely resolved the fuel slosh issue. But no one will ever know if LM-7's kludged-in baffles would have worked during a full PDI burn, since that LM never landed, instead having its DPS engine used solely for in-flight burns to get Apollo 13 home.

Hi Felix. In the plumbing world, 'water hammer' occurs when a length of water in a long pipe is suddenly stopped (eg, by sudden switching off of a tap or a solenoid valve). Large shock pressure loads are created as the water has to suddenly decelerate. It can even rip pipes and fittings apart. The same shock loads, but massively increased occur as that huge mass of fuel suddenly slams back into one end of its fuel tank.

I think the Polaris Dawn mission might be almost important as the Starship launches. We are going to have a new EVA suit in the first time in forever, not only for space walks, but possibly for walking on the Moon and Mars. We also don't need to just do a space walk, but we seriously need to learn to weld, manufacture, assemble outside the space craft. Ideally, as Tesla is designing a humanoid robot, Space X could build a robot for extra vehicular builds. A new space station is a must....

These EVA suits are purely just for fun as they don't have any independent life support systems. They all rely on the dragon capsule being the life support system. I don't see any practical application for SpaceX to do this other than upcharging on the flight and maybe testing some new technologies, but I don't think they're testing stuff on real people.

Slosh baffles can be part of the solution, but the biggest part of the solution will involve adjusting the timing and thrust pressures to minimize the push-back experienced by the propellant liquids at hot staging. The throttle-down of the booster, the engine throttle level of the ship, and possibly a closely-timed throttle-up by the booster during separation can all be adjusted to accomplish this...as more flight data is available to make these calculations.

They may have anti slosh, but it's not why you think. It looks like there was a huge negative acceleration during the firing of Starship's engines (Hot staging), which causes the fuel to create a water hammer effect in the plumbing. Many of the engines fired up, but some didn't. So it's more likely we had a structural failure of some kind. I don't think the few engines going out is why the FTS was triggered, especially considering it easily had enough thrust to get back. As there are only welds near the bottom? It's probably an attempt to keep "some" fuel towards the bottom of the tanks at all times. I still think they'll reconfigure the Hot Staging process, either keep the booster throttled up, or keep the ship throttled down (or a combination of both) to ensure it doesn't experience a massive negative acceleration again.

I'm surprised that an adequate anti-sloshing baffle wasn't introduced to start with because this is a huge source of instability. It adds weight, of course, so I'm guessing this is why they experimented with what they believed they could get away with until now.
@simongeard4824

The question is, what's "adequate" - and given that hot-staging was retrofitted onto Booster 8, it's likely that that incarnation of the hardware wasn't designed with such hard deceleration loads in mind. The same is probably true of B10 for the next flight... it'll take a while before design changes make it through to flight testing. Also, this stuff isn't easy to model accurately, and while SpaceX do make heavy use of computer modelling and simulation, they also like to do real-world testing to validate them. So losing a booster during testing isn't going to upset them much if the data helps improve the accuracy of the next round...

Couldn't tell the positioning of the baffles from the video, but I'd like to know exactly how the baffles are positioned to prevent sloshing and backflow of fuel within the tank. Are they layered horizontally, vertically, diagonally, a mixture of both, flat or cone-shaped inside the tank, offset, or collated, with or without perforations on the baffles? Any thoughts for a video and explanation?
@DougVanDorn
@DougVanDorn 3 ай бұрын
I believe baffles commonly are set up to damp out vertical sloshing first, and horizontal sloshing second, since you want to damp out both, but the vertical sloshing -- with the much longer paths along the X-axis of the tanks -- causes more energetic "hammering" as it sloshes. But the tank baffles I've seen pictures of always seem to be set primarily to damp vertical sloshing, but had some baffles that broke up horizontal sloshing, as well.

I still think that remediation efforts need to go beyond anti-slosh baffles and slower post-burm pivoting away of the booster. Dont just gimbal off-centre the sea-level engines of the upper-stage Starship, when it fires up. Instead, fire only the off-center vacuum engines, initially--limiting or minimizing damage to the top of the booster. Only 5 or 10 seconds AFTER that separation are the Starship sea-level engines fired. A straightforward, easy operational modification.
@kstaxman2

If only it were that simple. You really think that SpaceX wouldn't think of that solution? Slosh is an extremely complex issue and there are no simple solutions.

@DougVanDorn 3 ай бұрын
The sea-level Starship engines didn't contribute to the booster exploding, and they are gimballed out to the sides to the max degree during ship/booster separation already, to reduce impingement on the hot stage ring's dome. What causes fuel to begin to slosh in the booster is what's called "unloading," when the ship separates and the booster is suddenly pushing about 15% of the mass it had been pushing just prior to sep. The weight being conducted through the booster's structure "unloads," and in the process the booster is thrown forward, then back, and if the fuel sloshes again, that hammering motion of the fuel repeats. One reason why SpaceX wants to keep thrust going on the booster through sep is to smooth out this unloading. But the only way this unloading is dangerous is if it causes the booster to recontact the upper stage after sep, which killed at least one of the Falcon 1 flights. The slosh that killed the last booster happened because of the fast pitchover maneuver the booster made just after sep, which moved the LOX and the methane remaining in the nearly-empty tanks away from enough of the feeder inlets to starve running engines and cause one (or one of the pumps) to explode. Again, though, you need as much separation thrust as possible to get the ship off of the booster at sep without recontact, so you have to fire up the sea-level engines along with the vacuum engines, or else you'll get a much more dangerous .situation where the booster rams into the flamey end of the Starship, breaking engine bells and making it a Bad Day.

I agree with the slosh baffles because truck drivers have serious hazards if freight is moving around in the trailer if load is not secure and balance of thr load is placed unevenly inside the trailer. Add turbulence to the picture is like driving on a highway when a passing motorist climbs infront of an imbalanced load and retreads come unglued and the tractor jack knifes. Or worse, a tanker being pulled by a truck sloshes the liquid propelent inside the tanker causing the trailing tank to become unstable on the 5th wheel or towin shoe causing the truck to flip with driver behind the wheel. But I wonder if the tanks had long honey comb straws inside them, if these structures would reduce the sloshing ? Sort of the same effect as a break water wall inside a squeeze mop bucket to reduce water inside the bucket from sloshing around which can destabilize the propelant inside of the reusable booster.

What if they keep the booster vertical post separation and then under power turn it around? Wouldn’t this keep the fuel from sloshing?

I have always wondered why the test site is called Massey's and what that had to do with SpaceX. I was really wanting to know, I am so glad that you explained that the name Massey's is a holdover of the previous business located on that property and had nothing to do with SpaceX

Thinking about Voyager. Is there any projects in development with the primary mission of getting outside the solar system loaded with every sensor we can pack into it to learn as much science as we can? Something that would get there quicker than what we have now?

Can you do a deep dive on how the high bay and mega bays work inside? I recall at one point permanent platforms along the corners with stairs and cargo elevators to aid speedy and safe access to workers and equipment to the ships surface were speculated to exist. Now I see they are still using modular ladder scaffolding. 🤷🏻‍♂️ 0:54

I think the booster will need a 2nd set of header tanks or some way to refill the header tanks from the main tank after the boost back turn

That may work well. I am betting that a slower flip maneuver will solve the problem with no added mass.

Scott Manley posited soon after IFT-2 that fuel slosh may have actually caused deformation/destruction due to the massive amount of weight slamming into the bottom of the tank. Extra baffling would solve this; after seeing the interior shot, I think that is very likely at least part of the failure - it just makes sense to put in the solution even if it wasn't actually the cause. Here's to a successful boost back and landing.

Installing 'solutions' ahead of full understanding of all the issues adds weight without justification. Lets give the experts on the ground time to figure this out. To quote Elon : "No part is the best part".
@kstricl
@kstricl 3 ай бұрын
@@jrb_sland Considering they are still at prototype stage, this is the perfect time to test solutions. The weight of extra baffling should be negligible compared to the mass they are launching. Since they didn't have cameras watching everything internally (as far as I know) and couldn't recover the booster, they need to rule out as many failure points as possible.
