Falcon Heavy Test Flight

SpaceX

6 жыл бұрын

Following its first test launch, Falcon Heavy is now the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9.
Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

My boss fired me the day I returned from Florida to witness this event. Totally worth it.
@egoequus6263
@egoequus6263 6 жыл бұрын
Not a small job, it was my career for 20 years. They were going to fire me anyway since they were purging everyone of a certain age for the past 2 years. They couldn't fire me for anything else, so they waited until I took a PTO (which was approved) then fabricated an HR case against me. Even HR was uncomfortable with the circumstances, but the boss is the boss. Two weeks after they fired me, they fired the boss who fired me. They even tried to prevent me from collecting unemployment by telling the NJUI office I was fired for "misconduct". Unfortunately for them, I had been collecting detailed evidence of what was going on which NJUI believed. I got my UI and my employer got in trouble. If they had given me a fair severance, they would have avoided all this. Instead, they may get in more trouble soon. Another wrinkle is that this employer uses something called "The Work Number" by Equifax. This is a system where they transfer your entire HR file to Equifax so that it follows you everywhere. Look it up, it is barely legal. I would divulge the name of the company, but it is a very large and litigious one that is protective of their reputation.
@egoequus6263
@egoequus6263 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, it was a hostile firing. Companies do this to save money. In addition, my boss was doing unethical stuff (which is why they wanted me out since I wouldn't cooperate). Luckily, my profession is in high demand and I am good on money. I am just taking this year off, do some options trading for spending money, enjoy some travelling without getting the boss's permission. Not surprisingly, my former employer is now in trouble for an botched audit on a well known software company.

@@WiilyDerbbinphlatte Refurbishing SRBs is quite different from Reusing Boosters, even using the shuttle as the example would be difficult as the amount of work required to refurbish a shuttle was simply obscene compared to a Falcon 9, falcon heavy, or the in progress Superheavy and Starship. the Propulsive landings for the SpaceX rockets, as well as their more flexible design allows for a level of re-usability and cost mitigation that Nasa simply can't match. as far as I'm away Nasa never attempted a powered landing with hardware similar to what SpaceX is using, while they do have sky-crane to land stuff on Mars, or the Lunar landers, they are not comparable to landing a several story tall booster precisely on a landing pad.

SevelRomanov Well the tesla which is on a trajdctory towards mars travels even faster relative to the sun, as is required to escape the gravitational tethers of the earth, so it is in fact the fastest moving car in history. Additionally, the tesla is placed into a resonant orbit with that of mars so that it will intercept it after a number of orbits, thus an eccentric orbit around the sun is used, which translates into even greater relative velocity relative to the sun than the earth.

I didn't expect that either. I read a comment on here just before they landed, stating the reuse of the Falcon boosters. I didn't realize they went to such lengths. Small nitpick, but vehicle supersonic != Max-Q, these two events are separate but they happen in pretty rapid succession. Supersonic is just breaking the sound barrier while maximum aerodynamic pressure is the point at which the aerodynamic loads on the rocket are highest (which happens right after reaching supersonic). This happens because these loads are a function of speed which increases over time and air density which decreases over time (since the rocket goes up through the atmosphere). This makes intuitive sense, since at liftoff these forces start at zero (since initial velocity is zero) and end up at zero (when the rocket reaches the vacuum of space). And for the icing on the cake: this is also a very neat application of the intermediate value theorem, more precisely Rolle's theorem, which is an application of IVT on the derivative over a segment where the function has the same value at both ends; this tells us that the derivative must cancel out at some point, reaching a global extremum (global because the set of extrema is finite) which happens to be a global maximum (because the norm of the force is positive). So that's nice.
