Well to be fair there are two excellent reasons for this. Firstly, The Globe Theatre stopped existing for much of that time. Secondly, underground railways also did not exist for much of that time. But as soon as they both did they got right on it.

Actually, I think he really enjoys the nitpickers. I think he takes it to mean that his viewers are really dedicated Tube aficionados, and love not only the system itself, but the rich and varied histories behind every station and every line...Even the stations and lines which were never built. I don't know, I could be wrong, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who lets that sort of thing get him down...as he said. Funny that they, too, used that production of The Magic Flute as a reference for the station. There is a new (as yet unopened) subway station in Berlin called Museumsinsel, on the U5, which is also inspired by that stage design, since that station will serve the Berlin State Opera, where Schinkel was working when he designed that production. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zpe3pXWhgs1mj8k As you can see the platform ceilings are blue and they are dotted with "stars" like in Schinkel's design.

As a one-time Londoner (although in the outer suburbs), and still (in normal times) a regular visitor to London, I agree. Tending to be a "north of the River person" (Londoners can generally be split between "north of the River" people and "south of the River" people), I am not over-familiar with the area around Waterloo, and I have no idea where Southwark station is. I would find it helpful to see where it is in the context of the wider area.

I really like Southwark Station and its design. As a Waterloo East user, having easy access to the underground is excellent rather than use that awful, long trudge to Waterloo mainline. And those of us lucky enough to have a London Freedom pass could go through the ticket gate at Waterloo East walk straight past the underground platforms and exit the ticket gate at the far end onto The Cut. Thank you for another great video, Jago.

Hi, Jago!) I've never been to this station, but judging by the pictures of the platform level and the escalator arches on top, it would say it's a little bit of geometric monumentalism (similar to Mario Botta's architecture). It's quite close to brutalism, but brutalism usually futures "unnecessary", grotesque features. Here it's just strong geometric shapes, quite brutal, but not that brutal:D The part with those blue triangles is closer to modern mild, almost latent, deconstructivism, which dominates contemporary architecture. Overall, it's all just modernism, which is about 110-120 years old) I really like some parts of the interior, though the exterior is quite pedestrian. P.S. Check out Mario Botta's projects, he is one of the greatest architects of our time:) Cheers, your faithful watcher, Mr. Headuphisarse Architect.

A glorious symphony of concrete and steel. I’d cal it ‘modern brutalist’ myself. It surpasses the greyness of 60/70’s brutalism but retains the starkness and clean line. The light well in the foyer looks fantastic at night when the blue lighting is in effect. I could gush on a lot longer but I’ll say; Thanks a million for covering my favourite station. You’re the best KZbinr ever and I will now stop pestering. Although, Chalfont & Latimer...

Agreed. It definitely couldn’t be called brutalist as there are clearly nonfunctional artistic flourishes in the architecture - the triangular panels, etc. but definitely looks to the aesthetic of brutalism for inspiration.

Sadly this hasn't happened as yet. Maybe a good moment for such a concert, with the demise of the concert hall promised to Sir Simon Rattle. Due to the meaness of the City of London Corporation and arts funding public bodies. A matter of shame that all London can offer in terms of concert halls , is the Royal Festival Hall,the Albert Hall( of mushroom acoustic fame) and the Barbican. Keep up the good work.

Simon Jenkins liked this enough to include it in Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations along with Canary Wharf, Gants Hill, Southgate and Surbiton. To me it isn't brutal enough to be Brutalist - it has nice curves, interesting materials, colour and light! It may actually be the only tube station directly connected to a mainline station that doesn't share its name, since the separate Charing Cross/ Embankment/ Strand/ Trafalgar Square saga was sorted out (see separate Jago video!)

It’s basically a form of modernism. Brutalism is a branch of modernism as well. That’s not brutalist, too airy and shiny and intent is also to be taken into account. If the architect didn’t intend brutalism, then it simply isn’t brutalist. (Yes; degree in architecture, but non-practicing). None of this crabby, just joining the conversation.

May I be frightfully pedantic, and point out that the unextended Jubilee line is actually more recent than the Victoria Line (1977 vs 1971)? On the other hand, it did take over a branch of the Bakerloo line, so not all of it was completely new, whereas the Victoria Line was new from end to end, which is perhaps what you meant?

Yeah, I'm one of those three guys been asking for this. We meet every other week on a Zoom chat, in order to coordinate our efforts. KA-CHING! Thanks, buddy! In all seriousness, this is one of my absolute favorite channels on KZbin, I can't get enough of these stories, and you tell them wonderfully. I live in America, just south of Washington DC, where we have our own Metro system, but I could never fill a channel with as many great stories as the London Underground has. Keep 'em coming, my friend.

Perhaps you got a lot of requests because of the TfL workers in Palestra house. The Waterloo area I have found to be rather quirky. Offices, Peabody housing, street food, Roupell Street terraced housing, Union Jack club. Office space has always been out of place around here, it’s really destroyed what should be a primarily residential and leisure area.

🤔 Yes. George Peabody should be remembered as a poor man made good who then used his wealth to provide social housing before the welfare state existed. The charity in his name still exists for the same purpose today.

"Brutalism" comes from French «béton brut», "raw concrete". It just means that it's an architectural style that uses unadorned concrete left in it's "natural" state. It has nothing to so with brutality, steel, or violence...

I think its named "Southwark" due to it being located in the ancient district in which the borough got its name (as the name has been associated with theatre)

Yeah. If you think of Southwark as the London Borough of Southwark then maybe the name is strange but in Chaucer's time it would have been a thousand times stranger to consider Dulwich as part of Southwark. Probably a nod to a historically significant part of London that has always been looked down on as a run down area (fair enough) I grew up in the area but live abroad now. When I come back I usually use Southwark instead of Elephant and Castle as I would feel safer walking jetlagged down Great Suffolk Street than coming out at the Elephant roundabout with a suitcase.

Most informative, the design does bring to mind the operatic, make Mozart proud, and Shakespeare counts the extra box office sales :) Incidentally, how many TFL stations have the automatic/ safety door arrangement, very prevalent in overseas cities, not so much in London? ....Drew

I had the "fortune" of staying at a hotel in Southwark once. Great fun trying to explain to anyone where I was going. No matter how I twisted and turned that word, I had no luck saying it in a way the locals recognized. I think you have to be a native to get that pronunciation right.

Talking of the Jubilee line is anyone else surprised that a station wasn't built at the southern end of Tower Bridge? It just seems to me that with all the housing development along Tower Bridge Road and the number of tourists it would have been a well used station.
@SBAK4444
@SBAK4444 3 жыл бұрын
Simon, hi, thank you. I am not surprised. The Jubilee line opened in 1979. At that time, London docks were still open (and closed in 1980). The area along Tooley Street, from Hays Galleria to Tower Bridge was, in the 1980’s, and into the 1990’s very run down. It consisted of some derelict buildings and wastelend. Yes, this being the same area where the Mayor’s Office is. Incidently, the redeveloped Hays Galleria, was reopned in 1986 (same year as Richard Rodgers’ “oil rig” Lloyds Building in Lime Street). For some perspective, the first building in Canary Wharf (a few miles away), was not completed until 1991. Tower Bridge Southside was developed a number of years later. It would be great to have a station there now though!

I didn't know you could change for Waterloo East here! It's in Southwark the area, which is part of Southwark the borough. I also think of these stations as new, and I think they are quite sexy.
