@@DGCMO Eddie Murphy was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1980's, maybe even the top 10. But once the 90's hit, he wasn't nearly as popular anymore. So when David say 'Look kids, a falling star, make a wish' David is basically saying that Eddie Murphy is a falling star, like a movie 'star' whose career is falling. Also, back in the old days, when you saw a 'shooting star' or a 'falling star' in the sky, you made a wish. 😎😎

The first three were never overwhelmingly beloved celebrities and an international superstar on the level of Eddie Murphy. This was the first time since Eddie's shot quickly to stardom in the early 80s that he was experiencing a decline at the box office. The films weren't being well received and although moderate hits, they were not the massive blockbusters people were used to. David was the first to strike. Eddie did have a little family-friendly comeback with Nutty Professor and the Shrek films, but that ended up being a double edged sword as he started making unfunny family movies after that and became irrelevant in comedy.

Eddie ended up ok tho. I would say his career has been amazing and he’s legit legend. He did fall off, and his comeback was full of corny shit, but it was mostly EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL corny shit and A LOT of it. That coupled with his early work which was so progressive and cutting edge makes for a well rounded career. I mean, we couldn’t expect him to stay edgy and ground breaking forever! He was dropping genius shit already by age 21! I just watched Coming 2 America and it wasn’t early Eddie good, but it was EXCELLENT for a comedy from a brilliant comic in his 50s who has been at it rather consistently for over 30 years. A legend. In spite of his many crap films, I still call him legend. All that said, this was a great Hollywood minute!!

Almost 30 years later I see and hear the famous Eddie Murphy "Falling star" joke that made EM mad at David for 20 years... Love these old SNL clips. Of course here in 2024 we have Dana and David doing Fly on the wall podcast where members, writers, and hosts of SNL tell stories from seasons they worked in

At Cornell University they have an incredible piece of scientific equipment known as the tunneling electron microscope. Now, this microscope is so powerful that by firing electrons you can actually see images of the atom, the infinitesimally minute building blocks of our universe. If I were using that microscope right now... I still wouldn't be able to locate the humor in this video.
