What I love most about this recipe is that you can easily make it a day ahead and pop it into the oven the next day after work. So easy to customize...bechamel if you have the time, cooked Italian sausage or even make it vegetarian? Thank you Home Cooking Adventure team for an inspiring change to a traditional dinner. Been making this since the 1970's. I think it's older than that because my mom got the recipe from an older neighbor. It's so good it's addictive. Seriously, make this and double the recipe, you will want leftovers. I use cottage cheese instead, which adds an additional texture. It also freezes very well. You can freeze before and after cooking, and it tastes the same as fresh.

@@phillipsmom6252 Making a bechamel sauce is easy (though a bit time consuming) and if you add cheese at the end you have a Mornay sauce and you create a Mac & Cheese bottom. Lots of ways to customize this. Greek pastitsio noodles would work even better (think of spaghetti length macaroni). You can make this 10 different ways with different pastas as well.
