I was in this house many times with my dad before Elvis's death to visit Vernon. We never went in through the front door always through the driveway side and spent time in the den and dining room. TBH, I don't recall there ever being direct access to Graceland through a gate, we always just drove around and entered through the main gate. Vernon's brother Vester worked the gate btw in case you didn't know that already. We pretty much came and went as we pleased.

When we went thru the house, we saw the upstairs and at that time, there were holes in the roof above where you could see a little outside. But we got to see the whole house. We were invited to a party around the pool with Patsy Presley, Patsy Anderson and others. We got to go inside that back storage/office building, too. In fact, some of the carpeting from Graceland was taken out of Graceland and rolled up inside that building. Vernon used part of it for an office, if I remember correctly. The car port was there, also. Back in 1978, I met Vernon as he was coming out of this house and driving a white pickup truck over to Graceland. He stopped just outside the back door and had pictures taken with him and as he left in the truck. BEHIND THE STORAGE BUILDING, about in the middle, there was a wooden stepup platform and a low fence area where they would get thru from Graceland to Vernon's house. If you went back there again, you might dig a bit and find that step up so they could get over the fence.

It made me sad seeing the house, knowing his son passed away before him. It is said Vernon Presley died of a broken heart, I can believe it. I hope the house, the other structure, the pool, and the grounds are restored, very much history with the house (kept up as Graceland is).

I am one of the people that wrote on the back fence of Vernon's house. I was on a tour with The Elvis Travel service/Strictly Elvis, during Elvis week 2014. Crissie, known as Historical Blue Moon, who owned the house along with her husband Keith (who has sadly passed away), allowed us to tour the whole house, including upstairs, hosted a fabulous buffet for us and let us sign the back fence. She also let me keep a broken bit of the tarmac from the floor near the pool. I have photos of me signing the fence. Billy Stanley was there with us when we did it! :-)

So sad to see the house in the shape it is in. I've been in that house many times when Elvis was alive and well when I was a child. The house was changed by Vernon and his girlfriend Sandy in late 70's. The bedrooms were all upstairs prior. The kitchen was off the drive on side (the little door way) and in back of the house. I can fill you in if you have questions. When you walked in the front door, (the front entry has changed a lot from then, left was a formal living, right used to be a formal dining. where kitchen is now).

The house is still in great shape! I believe you're right Billy, if someone had the skills(free labor) that back building could be put back together reasonably cost wise. My husband and all 3 son's had and have the skills and have saved me a fortune! My home was built about the same time as Vernons. My husband added 3 rooms and built 2 buildings in back of our home. After he passed my son's have kept it up for me including heating and air, plumbing and the roof. Of course I buy all materials and my 2 son's(oldest passed) will inherit. So they are basically taking care of their inheritance. LOL

Billy, i found the elvis in concert vinyl today. My first time trying to find a vinyl of his and found one. It is of the cbs special his last special recorded june 19 and 21,1977. I am so excited. Then i found a record player to play it on all for 21.00 at the goodwill. It was "meant to be." Both in good shape. At the end, was vernon talking about elvis's passing. At first, i thought it was elvis talking. then, i realized it was not elvis. i was like who is this? I looked at the cover and realized it was vernon. Now i know were elvis's distinctive voice came from his father. Now i also know why elvis's birth certificate said evis instead of elvis. Vernon says it with no noticeable "L" like old southern english where we slur our words, syllables and make new words.lol. i heard a recording of elvis talking to a girl on the phone, and i wasn't sure it was him and maybe it wasn't. If it was, Elvis says to her "do what?" Which in southern means what did you say? My grandparents said that all the time, and it made me laugh/cry hearing that used again. He also laughed his laugh which made me think it was him. I may have listened to this phone call on one of your videos. I'm not sure. I also came across a vinyl that had the songs hurt, you'll never walk alone, and unchained melody. I was like, huh? Turns out i found an album of roy hamilton whom elvis met. Roy has some of the same sound such as his vibrato. I found pictures of them together online. Maybe you can do a video about them. Do you know if they worked together on elvis's sound and style for these songs? Sorry for the narrative. Enjoy your videos as always.

I'm glad to see Vernon's house looking better than it used too. It looks like Art has fixed it up quite a bit ...so a donation to tour the house is only fair in my opinion. I remember reading the following information...Vernon worked closely with the contractors while his house was being built and when Vernon and Dee Stanley and her boys moved into the house ...Dee thought the house was too closed in so she had it remodeled to her liking and had most of walls that were in the back of the house tore out and had sliding glass doors installed. Dee also had a sauna installed in her bathroom and a white marble pool installed in her bedroom. There are five bedrooms upstairs with two large balconies. With regards to the gate leading to the Graceland' property I remember watching a KZbin video that actually showed the gate but I can't seem to locate it now. Great video. Thank you.

It appears the gate was removed when the fencing was replaced because he showed it to some of us. Dr. Nick was my grandmother's (owner of Bill & Jims restaurant on Madsion and Mclean} doctor also and came to her funeral. We lived on Wild leaf across from Graceland for a little while and got to go in once when he was in Vegas. My father had connections and Pappys Lobster Shack was family also, they called Pappy Sammons the Mayor of Overton SQ

Billy, SKMcCarty is correct! When I was there last year (2017) the lady who was there told me where the original gate was located, to the left of the pool house, and she also mentioned that the gate portion was a sliding fence, not a gate that swung open. It has since been replaced with an unmovable permanent fence. At that time, they were also selling some pieces of the Graceland wood fence that had broken when lightning struck a tree on the Graceland side and came crashing down onto their property taking some of the Graceland fence with it. I bought a piece as a Memorabilia piece to help raise funds for further restoration of the house.
