On the Spanish island of La Palma, the Cumbre Vieja volcano is spewing lava and ash, forcing residents from their homes. It’s a nightmare for the tourist destination, one of the Canary Islands off the north-west African coast. What will become of the island?
Two million years ago, the island was formed by nearby volcanoes. Today, the same phenomenon is causing many thousands of residents to fear losing their homes as lava and toxic gases pose a growing threat. One of them is Nieves Rodriguez, who says: "We have spent our whole lives here. It’s painful to give it all up." DW’s Norman Striegel spoke with numerous residents, as well as those offering help. He also met one or two people who are traveling to the island right now, to watch the volcano in action.

@Willow, I will pray for them as well. The people who mock God, and His beloved Son have no idea how powerful prayer is. I figured that someone would make a comment that wasn't needed. One day sooner than people think, they will be weeping and nashing their teeth. I will pray for those who mock and don't believe. God bless.

So pleased to watch a video that is focused mainly on the people who are most affected by this volcano event. Good reporting. There will be many stories to come, of that I am certain. Right now, the individuals interviewed are in survival mode because of this crisis. It is good that we hear their stories, whether anyone else approves of the mitigation first aid by caring people or not. There is never, ever, a shortage of opinions in this world. And this is mine.

8:30, "nobody will buy bananas in this condition". This issue has now been addressed by the La Palma banana association, all affected bananas receive a sticker informing the buyer (further info in the local El Mundu newspaper), Public response is predominantly positive, they have no problem buying "scratched" bananas, they now know the inside is perfect.

We’ve seen footage of the dangerous lava flow but seeing the residents on the ground and what they’re having to endure with ash falling daily on their homes, streets, businesses is distressing!! Not to mention the horrible condition of the air they breathe!! Worst is fear of the unknown if new vents open causing the lava flow to destroy the land they know and the houses they live in!! It is good lava flows slowly giving them time they need to evacuate but their lives as they know will forever be changed!! Bless all LaPalma residents for safety 🙏🙏🙏🙏

not a city. nobody wants to live in ugly, sprawling, manufactured, soulless suburbs. i'd rather stay on la palma and deal with the consequences - at least i'll be home, with a sense of community and belonging. you don't just transplant thousands of people and expect them to live happily ever after. it's been tried - and failed - plenty of times.

Volcano's give much needed Life and Death to the planet every day... So anyone living close to one should know they're always living on the edge.
@wendywilson18
@wendywilson18 3 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gerick While I agree with your first sentence (except it takes much time to renew life to where it was before a "natural" disaster), I respectfully question your logic on your second sentence. People, and generations of people, living everywhere, anywhere on this planet are just people. Period. Many of us do not realize we might be living on the edge, as you put it. I would posit that until any one of us is faced with a natural event (i.e., a volcanic eruption in our back yard, a hurricane, a tornado, a mag 7+ earthquake, a tsunami, etc.), or a human-made event (i.e., war, etc.), we should not judge why some people live where they live. Life is precious in all its forms on this planet. Disruption of life as we believe it to be, and for many reasons, is inevitable. Not sure I can really change that fact. But I will give it the old "heave-ho" as they say, and do my part where I live, as best as I can, given the choices my ancestors made for me, many eons ago.

No one in Hawaii wonders why there's lava, everyone understands and respects nature's power and lives with it. You can't build your house on top of a volcano and act surprised when it blows. Common sense is heartless? It saves a lot of money. You don't keep rebuilding your house in tornado alley expecting nature to act different just because you are there. I am not saying they deserve it, but what did they expect to happen since it's been erupting in a pattern?

Living on a volcano is challenging and has obvious risks which have to be accepted. I lived in Indonesia where almost all the archipelago is formed of volcanoes. Everyone lives in their proximity and knows earthquakes, eruptions and ash/lava flows may occur
@vincentzack
@vincentzack 3 жыл бұрын
The western part of the volcano, the west flank, is extremely unstable and can slip into the Atlantic and cause an enormous tsunami. But the east side of the volcano is also at risk, especially if a strong volcanic eruption occurs, as is also the case with the western flank. The reason for that lies in the fact that the volcanic mountain is internally very porous and so saturated with water that, with a strong eruption, the water can suddenly vaporize and rip the volcano apart due to a steam explosion.

This is an active volcano: why were people allowed to permanently settle so close? Perhaps rather than rebuilding with permanent structures, use self-contained flatback houses that can be moved [out of harms way] relatively quickly & easily the next time this happens - which I assume it will. Best wishes for the future La Palma.

Well same can happen in Iceland too,or in Italy. People live in such sort of places for centuries, floods,fires etc. Forgetting that if nothing happened in 150+ years that eventually some generations will be affected by natural catastrophes. Climate changes, viruses evolve,eternal ice is melting,population who lives in Greenland is worried about that too, coz no one knows what kind of bacteria and viruses will be free when ice melts. We live in a period of changes, we are now those generations about who we red in history classes.our ancestors were affected by polio,hiv outbreaks, wars, earthquakes,volcano,Spanish flu etc. It is circle of a life.nothing new is happening now, what did not happen before, we are here now, 100, 500 etc years ago were our ancestors present..

Is there another version where you don't superimpose English speakers over the Spanish speakers' voices? Why couldn't you just put subtitles in, rather than having the speakers' voices still playing in the background as aural clutter while your actors spoke over top of them? Really annoying.

everywhere where there are mountains it is a risk. Here in France there are several "distinguished" volcanos, but now specialists are wondering if it would be possible that one of them will erupt anyhow. If it is not that, you still have floodings or tornados happening every day somewhere on the earth.
@orangeradishneo
@orangeradishneo 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lulisette the rocky mountains beg to differ lmfao. there's lots of mountain ranges around the world that don't have volcanoes. tornados can also be avoided if you live in a non flat area, such as near a mountain - destructive tornados RARELY touch down in southern ontario. I used to live right along the escarpment (small mountain) which protected my town from tornados touching down. flooding mainly only happens in the spring, with people living on waterfronts. no earthquakes. no hurricanes. the "worst" is lake affect snow, which isn't a natural disaster. not saying everyone HAS to move, but at what point do you leave? how can people live somewhere knowing every season/few years/few decades, there's going to be a natural disaster? tornado alley comes to mind. despite the fact that there are natural disasters all over the world, individuals will still choose to stay in an area with a higher probability of facing a natural disaster, such as along the gulf coast of Mexico.

Living anywhere is a risk. Natural disasters occur everywhere, whether it's flooding, droughts, wind storms, forest fires, landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis. You would struggle to find a single place on this planet that is free from natural disasters. So how is this any different? The volcanoes on this island had not erupted in 70 years, in comparison the Atlantic coast of the US gets pelted with multiple hurricanes and tropical storms every year and they are capable of much more damage than what has been seen on la palma so far. So no, living on a volcanic island is not particularly risky and even if it were the people who live in these towns have roots there that go back generations. There's just not much of a point even mentioning it, yet i see people bring it up on every comments section for coverage of this volcanic eruption.
