The problem is that the infrastructure ---roads, bridges, you name it--- has been destroyed. Stuff can only be taken to people in large amounts after some initial repairs, which are being done, but it takes some time and needs to be done sector by sector. It's over half a million people living in the impacted areas and helicopters alone can't do all the heavy lifting.

It rained more than a years worth of rain in less than 8 hours, there were tornadoes and hail the size of golf balls. In Some of those places it didn't even rain. It was the water coming from other cities reaching their villages like a Tsunami of water, dirt and debriss carrying cars, trees, masonry and even boats. The strength of the water carried away bridges with cars crossing them in a few seconds it all went too fast. People were caught unaware, by the time the alarm reached people's phones they were already in the middle of the flood.

Flat dried out plains due to over farming, a recipe for flash flooding in a 10 year storm.
@LaPizarraDeYuri21 күн бұрын
That's not the case of Valencia. Flash flooding has always happened in the area because of a mix of complex geography, an alluvial plain too close to the mountains, and the Mediterranean cold drop, a characteristic weather phenomenon in the area, that is now supercharged by high temperatures.

There's a weird expectation that the government should be able to swoop in and fix things right away. A major disaster like this is too big, the roads are unsurpassable, there are too many people that need help and many of the same people they expect to come save them are seeing to their own families. Getting through these types of disasters has to be planned and orchestrated at a community level first.
@catalina738322 күн бұрын
Our minister, in an arrogant tone, told the volunteers who were going to the villages to help and give food and water to move so that they would not "obstruct" the aid. (What aid? No one has come and no one has been seen.) If it were not for the neighbors who walked 6 hours to reach the most affected villages to give basic products, medicines and food and above all WATER, the people would not have survived. The Government is no longer expected.

The GUY interviewed ,said that floods happen here every 4 years or sometimes more often.
@Maatkara100020 күн бұрын
Yes, they do. Normal floods that end up being 50 cm tall, that cover the ground with mud and that sweep away trash cans. What does NOT happen is flash floods that end up being 3-4 meters tall, that deliver widespread destruction due to the water's volume and speed, that turn underground parkings, first floors, storage sites, cars, etc into death traps, that drag away thousands of cars -some with entire, now missing families inside-, and that end up spewing people's dead bodies to surrounding beaches five days after sweeping those people away.
@DkWen20 күн бұрын
Droughts and floods are increasingly frequent due to climate change, resulting in more extreme weather events. It’s crucial to understand that a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions is methane from ruminant animals, which has a greenhouse effect 28 times greater than carbon dioxide. Additionally, nitrous oxide from livestock farming has a greenhouse effect 298 times greater than carbon dioxide. By reducing meat consumption and increasing our intake of plant-based foods, we can all play a part in combating climate change and protecting our planet.”
