Lack of money, lack of infrastructure , lack of engineering, lack of support from the citizens . Too much red tape? Monopoly from airlines, or car manufacturers. Rode this same route in Preferente class with my wife on our honeymoon started in Barcelona and then went to Madrid. The train trip was a relaxing way to get across Spain and I'd gladly do it again.

@@enkidupont In Spain all railways are public, from state company RENFE (Red Nacional de Ferrocariiles españoles) and competition in railway services is not allowed. It's not a matter of competition but one of political willingness, and in North America everything is made to benefit the car.

@@Roger-ph8og Actually, and although it's been like that forever, that's about to change with the introduction of 2 new competitors - Ouigo from French SNCF and ILSA from Italian Trenitalia. Lowcost Ouigo will start services in about 6 months and tickets are already available for purchase with prices mostly between 9€ and 25€ on services from Madrid to Barcelona with stops at Zaragoza and Tarragona. Services will expand through other lines as time goes by, with planned introduction on the Madrid-Alicante/Valencia and Madrid-Malaga/Seville lines set to in 2021-2022. Trenitalia will enter service in about a year, offering a 4 class service similar to that of Renfe, except that Trenitalia has already said that, apart from the national services, they plan to operate international services to Portugal, France and Italy.

Did you purchase the tickets online prior to boarding the train? Which station did you catch the train from in Barcelona? I am heading to Barcelona next week and will take the train to Madrid.

Desmond A I took the train from Barcelona Sants Train Station which is the main train station. I bought the tickets from a kiosk which was very easy to use! I bought them the day before my trip and upgraded to Preferente Class because the difference in price was not much!

Thanks for you quick response. Love your videos. I am heading to Barcelona next week and will take the train to Madrid. Which areas or streets did you stay in both cities? Which hotels? Airbnb? Trying to book my hotels but not sure where to stay. I want to be close to the main attractions and the train stations from which I can easily catch the AVE speed trains. I may enter Portugal too depending on time factor. Have you been to Lisbon? Which attractions did you visit in both Barcelona and Madrid? Any suggestions? Is it true there is quite a huge problem of picking pocket in Spain? I am a solo traveller.

Its been a while since I was in Spain so I don't remember the hotels. I haven't tried airbnb's yet, so I look for cheap hotels in the city center near subway or metro stations. I don't mind a crappy hotel if its in a good location. In Barcelona, I had a wonderful day trip to Montserrat, which I got there by train and took a funicular up to the monastery and hiking paths! I also took a day trip to Sitges, which is a fun town! I went to many of the top tourist sites in Barcelona as well. I didn't think Barcelona was unsafe, but you always need to be on guard in any city! I only spent one night in Madrid before flying home so I didn't do anything touristy there. I want to go back to explore more. I have also never been to Portugal, but that's on my list too! :-)

Services to the south and to France are made on the S100. To some of the eastern destinations they use the S103. And for the rest, they use the S102/112. Avlo also uses the S112, and btw; for services to Galicia, they are going to use the S105 (CAF Oaris) I hope this helps you, those can change, but it usually is like that

Aaron Hayward I wish I had better information for you. I purchased my ticket from an automated kiosk at the train station a few days before my trip. The cost of the upgrade was only about 20€ so I decided to upgrade.

I am from Canada and I use hotels.com. I also want to document my trip like you. I only have a Samsung phone. No vlogging camera. Is it possible with only a phone? I don't even know how to edit. Desmond A I use hotels.com also! I was in Barcelona another time and stayed at Ramblas Hotel right on the famous street! Address was La Rambla, 33, 08002. I think I used a free night on hotels.com. The hotel was nice and the location was STELLER!! Some of my better videos were shot entirely on my phone! Thanks for the kind words about my videos on KZbin! I just booked this hotel: Hotel Ingles Calle Boquería, 19 Barcelona, 08002. I hope it is close to the same neighborhood (Gothic Quarters) as yours. I am still trying to find one for Madrid. I also have one free night from hotels.com from my last year trip. I have more questions about vlogging with your phone. How do you paste the clips together from different events of your day? Or do you just vlog non stop the whole day and then download it? You use SD cards for the vlogging, right? Do you export it to your computer afterwards? I am a novice with all these technology. But I will love to document all my trips for personal use and watch it later. Last year all I did was take pictures, that's it. Do I need those clip on lense for the phone? I saw one on TV. I am jealous you are at Japan now. That is one of my dream places to visit. I hope you are not affected by the typhoon Jebi.

Andreas Pille AVE trains (high speed) only stops in the most important cities of the line and almost once time a day has a direct service (2.30 hrs) beetwen Madrid and Barcelona. If u want to stop in other city you must take the tradicional train (other railway, 5 hrs aprox). Sorry for my English 😅

T Car the only way I will fly is if it’s Trans Pacific from San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle to Manila,Tokyo & Honolulu where I have no choice except go by ocean freighter which takes a week to get to Honolulu & 2 weeks to get to Manila, and fly to Alaska, again very limited choices. I will travel long distance in the U.S. & Canada by train, I travel by train from San Diego to Los Angeles & Oxnard,CA when I visit in San Diego for up to a week. Train travel beats driving, the bus and you don’t have to deal with the parking lots of many interstate highways in most urban areas nationwide in the U.S.
