I work as a freelance writer and love the flexibility to do so remotely. If I ever had to work from a café or the like in a pinch, I would be more than happy to pay an hourly rate. Saying that, I never have and prefer to pay for a co-working space or something a little quieter. Taking up a table for hours in order to earn money while only purchasing a hot drink is taking the piss. These are social places designed for people to enjoy themselves over something to drink and a snack, not somewhere to work. Just as drinking coffee and socialising in the centre of an office where people are trying to work wouldn't be tolerated, turning a social setting into an office shouldn't be either. It's disrespectful. I fully agree with establishment owners in this case. The digital nomad visa requirements are quite high for many countries. Digital nomads need to earn a fair amount to acquire such a visa. Finding a country with a lower cost of living is the goal for many, and competing with locals in said countries who earn less was bound to cause issues. I was wondering how long it would take for this to become a problem. It's great in theory, but some foresight should have been applied before implementing such visas.

There are cafes in the uk where people working on their laptops ask other customers to be quiet so they can conduct a Zoom meeting. At least one cafe has put a stop to this and quite rightly. I don’t blame the cafe owners. The people working in cafes, or some of them, are taking the mickey. Sometimes you go into a cafe and most of the tables have one person sitting at them working. So where do a group of friends sit?

Great solution people have data on their phones . Laptop users shouldn't be allowed to occupy a whole table to themselves , avail of heating in winter and air conditioning in summer , plug in their devices and stay as long as they want for the price of a coffee . That's abuse ! Should not be tolerated

Cameron will probably loose Gibraltar. Why is that clown in the current British Government? Why is he a Lord? Cameron is totally responsible for the mess that is Brexit. See lots of lap top digital nomads in Manchester, never seen anybody using a laptop in Bemalmadena - shall start the trend. However rather enjoy the coffee and the weather. Just thought Spanish people often sit down and enjoy drink with their pals and stay there seemingly forever. Long live Benidorm.

While the Digital Nomads may be an annoyance with higher rents etc, they do actually spend a lot of money in their leisure time all helping a country's economy, who is going to be the next target? Arguably it's a difficult one it's so sad the world is turning in on itself.

They may spend some money, but chances are that they are not paying the minimum social security contribution of €300 per month that Spanish residents have to pay, so not only are they competing for accommodation, but they are also competing for work with an unfair advantage.

The Falklands have never been part of Argentina, yet the British gave them the right of self determination, they votrd overwhelmingly to remain British. Gibraltar, having been Annexed to Spain in 1501 (yes, it didn't belong to Spain in 1500, or for over 900 years previously), then captured by the British in 1704 during the War of Spanish Succession was ceeded by the Spanish to the UK under the Treaty if Utrecht, in 1713. This was renewed in 1763 and 1783. Given it was The Moors who first settled on the rock in the 8th century, previously home to Romans, Phoenicians and Neanderthals (in reverse order), Spain cannot claim 'it was always Spanish' as some mistakenly claim. A treaty is a treaty and the UK provided for the Gibraltarians to stay British or leave it in 1968. Since the people decided to stay British, but independent, the UK has taken the position on Gibraltar as it has on other overseas territories, the people have a right to self determination. For all those who whine that the people voted to remain in the EU, it's true. However, after the vote, they also stated they wished to remain British, as the other option was to be subsumed into Spain, which is what the Spanish are intent on. For me, they have a right to self determination, which they have consistently expressed as remaining British. While it's also correct that Ceuta and Melilla were Spanish before Morocco existed, the Spanish refuse to give them the right to self determination, as requested by Morocco.

Benidorm has enjoyed decades of benefits from British tourism, ever since my mom & sister & pals spent their 4 weeks in Valencia and Benidorm in the early 1950s & then Madrid and Santander & the boat back to Southampton. Today's Benidorm is working class Brit holiday hub with a different type of generation.

Spain has often caused delays at the Gibraltar border. The answer to that lies with Spain, which has to examine its silliness. That doesn't require EU involvement, although the EU is exploiting the situation so it can end Gibraltar's historic status. Cameron is the wrong person for these negotiations. We need someone to stand up to the bullying at the border

I've only been to London once, 40 years ago, and I did it as a digital nomad. A pint or a tea lasted me hours too and the waiters looked at me suspiciously, but it didn't matter because many waiters were Spanish digital nomads like me. There were thousands of Spanish digital nomads in London in those years. We used to hitchhike to Ostend, take the ferry, and then hitchhiking again to London, to learn English while earning money or spending little.

So Spain doesn't want Brits or digital nomads coming and spending their money. I guess the answer is to continue to bring in boatloads of migrants, after all they are unskilled, have no money for rents, so the locals can continue to enjoy low rents because the migrants will apparently not need apartments. For coffee shops, the digital nomads should be charged an hourly rate. One coffee doesn't do it, and likely other customers have to take their coffee and leave because there are no available tables. They get that "digital nomad glare". when they are looking for a seat!
@Eurobazz
@Eurobazz 15 күн бұрын
The hogging of tables in bars, cafés and restaurants took place long before the phrase 'digital nomad' entered common usage. Young people having no respect or consideration think it's their right to perform this act. The commercial location should exercise everything possible to deter these activities. Introducing a Faraday cage is one solution. In Portugal, the rent increases have resulted from digital nomads and the influx of US migrants. As a country much smaller than Spain, PT cannot absorb the rise in these two economic factors where Lisbon and Porto have been adversely affected.
