As to the weather, it has been variable over the last decade or so. However, extreme is not a word I would use. Some 30 years ago we still had Gota Frias and drought. Overall, 2007 was not a good year, but we were globally at a high in terms of storms etc. This is a cycle the planet goes through and has done for many centuries.

Tourists don't always bring their best selves with them. So if you are a rude, drunken tourists I can see where locals are pushed to their limits and slide down to saying some pretty nasty remarks. But in sporting evens it only takes one jerk to hurl a racist remark, then all the other jerks follow.

The racist Valencia fans were not tourists who got a bit too drunk and then shouted some things out of character they regretted. They were racists who thought it was OK to call Real Madrid's best player Vinicius, a monkey on repeated occasions. Vinicius gets a lot of abuse when Real Madrid play away. I was at Mallorca-Real Madrid in February. Vinicius got abuse from home crowd.

We don't see racism in other sports, only in soccer. It doesn't matter if it's Spain or any other country. The Times has published that FIFA is considering whether Spain should host the 2030 World Cup because it doesn't meet the inclusion and human rights criteria that led them to choose Qatar as the last venue. I think it is propaganda. Vinicius and ETA have been the main topics of debate for tomorrow's elections.

Greetings from Madrid's Barrio Tetuán! The racism conversation is long overdue. In my first year here we went with friends to Parque Retiro and there they popped a couple of bottles of cava. "Isn't there a law about drinking in public?" I asked and was told it's okay, we're Spanish and British. The law isn't for us. That was the eye-opener and ever since then I've seen dozens of cases of discriminatory law enforcement. Looks like the rain will hold on for another fortnight, too. Weather's gone potty.

Older Spaniards may be wary of non-Spanish people immigrating to Spain because they fear the loss of their culture. This is not xenophobia. Barbara Lerner Spectre is well known for having said (speaking in defense of the Jewish leadership in the cultural sea change all over Europe), “I think there’s a resurgence of antisemitism because at this point in time Europe has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we’re going to be part of the throes of that transformation which must take place." [By transformation she means massive, unlimited immigration from Western Asia and Africa.] "Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the center of that… Without that transformation, Europe will not survive.” (“Barbara Lerner Spectre calls for destruction of Christian European ethnic societies,” kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWWYiKeehbmiaJY) She is speaking in defense of the death of Europe as we knew it. This includes Spain. I valued my time in Spain as a guest and envied their long traditions and culture, having come from the US where it is said our culture is defined by not having a culture. I can fully understand a traditional Spaniard's concern over seeing his society and culture change daily before his eyes.

Ok. I have to speak out as a racialized person who lived in Spain. I followed the news report. The controversy was about a black footballer in Spain who experienced slurs, chants, insults, and having an effigy of his image burnt. His sentiments were shared by other black footballers in Spain and elsewhere. Others can't experience the same type of treatment experienced by blacks in Spain. I thought the press interview given by the Real Madrid coach about this Brazilian footballer was excellent. He understood the nuances of treatment based on race, such as being called names for one's team is not the same as being called a monkey and racial insults. In North America, we speak about "white privilege". You can walk into a store without being followed because of the color of your skin. I lived in Croatia and I was once very amused when a Croat had to read the last name of another person to figure out their ethnicity i.e. Serb or Bosniak. Blacks do not have that privilege. The color is obvious. There is an expression when speaking about racism. "Not without me". Significant because it directs us to listen to those with LIVED EXPERIENCE of racism (another term now frequently used by academics and ordinary people in North America ) who are best able to speak about it. Just like those with LIVED EXPERIENCE with disability are best placed to speak about disability and barriers they face. And women with LIVED EXPERIENCE of menopause are best placed to speak about it. Etc. Etc. I lived in Spain and there is racism in my hubby's own family! I worked for an international organization and did not immigrate, so maybe less xenophobia (once they knew I am Canadian). There is racism everywhere, including in Canada, a country heralded by many for tolerance. Spain is not unique regarding racism and not worse, in my opinion. I do not think their attitudes are worse than in other places I have lived in Europe (France, Croatia, Belgium, Switzerland). Are the English less racist? Are the Italians? No. No. I recall the European Cup finals a few years ago when the English black footballer missed the penalty shot to score a victory against Italy. He stated that he later suffered racial insults from English fans. What is the difference is how an institution, like al Liga, addresses racism. What does an organization, or a country plan to do? In Canada, black hockey players have had insults thrown at them. There was a big, big scandal a few months ago in Canada with racism towards black government employees by their white colleagues at the government organization that deals with complaints about human rights ( and thus racism) in Canada. Incredible!! How was it dealt with? Investigation. Government hearings with the leadership having to appear before a committee to answer questions about the allegations. Many of the members of this government committee were racialized persons. In other words, there was a system in place and representation on it by those with LIVED EXPERIENCE of racism. It is the response and the establishment of systems and processes that make the difference in combatting racism this is what makes Canada a leader. Racism exists here. In every country. Spain has had less immigration than say Canada. (You should visit Toronto or Vancouver someday and see what I mean) It is how one deals with it. Spain is now in a great position to deal with football racism. I hope they do.

The best way to gauge racism in a country is to pay attention to political parties. Look at Vox. It's grown based on racist ideology. The election polls 2 weeks ago showed PSOE, PP, Podemos, and Vox in that order. The latest polls I saw put Vox on #3, moving above Podemos, a party with a highly anti-racist platform. When a party that advocates hatred moves up so much it means that Spaniards support their rhetoric, which means they are racists, sexists, xenophobes, and homophobes. Also, my dear Stuart, a white man in the Western world won't suffer racism. It's interesting you brought that up.

That shift in the polls does not necessarily mean that more people have decided to support Vox, as you have framed it. It may mean that support for Podemos has lessened, possibly due to their rather incoherent presentation, and obsessions with identity politics. Those people would be very unlikely to transfer their vote to Vox. To draw the conclusion that the Spanish are therefore 'racists, sexists, xenophobes, and homophobes' makes no sense whatsoever.

Overt racist abuse as has been seen at football games is the very tip of the racism iceberg, and is relatively easy to deal with. The main challenge is doing something about the systemic racism built into almost every society. For example, in renting and buying property, doing business with banks, getting adequate medical care. This is what we're dealing with here in the US, and I'm sure that in a relatively homogenous society like Spain's, there's much, much work to do.

I have to disagree with you though when you say that some Spaniards are “a little bit racist”. That’s a bit like being a little bit pregnant ! In my opinion you’re either racist or not and people need to think seriously about this. What you didn’t say was that after Vinicius Jnr reacted following the racist taunt he was actually sent off though that now has been rescinded. We have a long way to go to root out this evil ! I've been visiting Cataluña and Spain for half of my life and love the country. However the racism in Spain and Cataluña is reminiscent of England in the 70's (that's not to say that racism has disappeared in England. It hasn't ). My own country of Ireland is hardly a shining beacon of openness with the introduction of immigrants to the now prosperous New Ireland. Most of my friends in Spain are immigrants but let's not mince words the vilest language and attitudes are aimed at people of colour (remember the thousands at the Barcelona Grand Prix in blackface as they welcomed Lewis Hamilton) and moreso those from Africa. It's disappointing and truly pathetic. And don't pretend there were small numbers chanting "mono, mono" in the Mestalla. Thousands were chanting the vile abuse. Many felt safe in posting videos of themselves and fellow "fans" singing their abuse. It would be marvellous if Vini Jr. making a stand were to change attitudes in Cataluña/Spain but quite frankly I don't see that happen.

Racism in Spain: As a white Brit living in Madrid for nearly 3 years. I have not really personally experienced racism. Some people have called me a "guiri" mostly in a joking way. Maybe I have experienced discrimination in terms of less good service in a restaurant, bar or shop compared to a Spanaird. Also looking for flat maybe I get fewer responses because I have a foreign name. Is Spain more racist than other countries. I think yes more racist than UK (or at least London and South East) in terms of insults against individual. In UK lived in Brighton and London which are cosmopolitan diverse cities. Madrid is also very diverse. I know UK had Brexit vote which was mostly motivated by xenophobia and wanting to stop immigration and won on basis of many lies. Weather: It has been very wet in Madrid this last week. Before that we had some very hot weather in April and early-mid May. It was very hot in Granada when I went there for puente de mayo. There is a drought and the rain is needed. There was spectacular storm last night in Madrid. I don't know if the DANA compensates for the drought or not. It is a lot of rain but is it enough to make up for 4 or 5 months of almost no rain? Either way it is clear that climate change and global warming is causing more extremes of weather.

This has gone on for far too long without any action from the authorities until the player rightly took a stand. Shame.

What's your problem? He isn't minimizing the situation by mentioning his own experience. He is merely reporting the current events. How much more sympathy did you want him to show? Would you happy if he dropped to his knees and started crying? Serious what the hell do you want from people? It's not his fault. Go to Spain and get angry at the people who actually made racist remarks. God!

@tritosac Excuse me! It's merely my opinion, just like you are giving yours. Stuart always requests comments and I don't think he is necessarily looking for his viewers to always agree with him. Surely if he has an issue with my remarks, he will say so.

Or perhaps they should grow a white skin, Philip? Any idea where in Spain one might be able to purchase one? I looked in a supermercado but, alas, to no avail.

@@alex31245 Apparently it took Europeans around 10,000 years to become as pale as we are after we all left Africa but your descendants could make the change in 4/5 generations by interbreeding, if that's what you want.

@@philiplindley7384 Oh, I'm never reproducing, you needn't worry about that, Philip. I wouldn't want to create a life that has to live with people who share your opinions about their fellow man. What you do need to worry about is as simple as your opinions: change. And, guess what, not even all your "pale" ancestors-as you so eloquently described them-can change that.
