People just do not like a 2 faced visitor. Locals are sick of those tourists. They are pushed out of the housing market and get sick of rolling suitcases 24/7. What the hell is complaining to local politicians going to do? Nothing. Most of them do not speak English even. Don't waste your time there as a foreigner. I was born and raised in Bath, which is a tourist city. The council seems to concentrate on tourism and the university. A lot of the jobs are low paid seasonal jobs and there is little in the way of job opportunities. The city attracts rich luvvies and commuters to London so the properties are horrendously expensive .Young people have to leave the city when they leave the parental home. When I visited my mother in hospital about 10 years ago, a nurse told me that Bath was London prices at Cornish wages and her children left because they couldn't afford to live there. There was a water shortage when I went to Sicily in 2002, leading to restrictions on water usage. This resulted in people not being allowed to have showers in their own homes, however hotels were exempt - presumably because of tourism. So if a local wanted to have a show, they had to book into a hotel. Tourism has its place, but if it gets too powerful it can ruin the affected areas. Unfortunately Spain has suffered from the influx of tourists that are just interested in drinking and parties. Even though it brings in money, it must upset the locals. I do have sympathies with the Spanish who are fed up of tourism. Having said that, I am thinking of going to Spain next year for a birdwatching holiday.

All of them families, so better than short term rentals that tend to be loud partiers, but still disturbing to the flow of neighborhood life. On the left side of us we’ve had multiple foreign owners that don’t speak English, and we don’t speak Chinese. GB News is correct to say that tourists like to eat and drink late. The problem is that Spanish employers won't pay their staff properly...and they bully their staff into working late, sometimes for nothing, in return for being allowed to keep their jobs. If employers are losing their staff...they are always complaining about lack of staff...they simply have to improve pay and conditions. Badic economics. But Diaz and Sanchez have agreed with Biden to take some/many of the illegal immigrants from the US border. Sanchez explains this by saying he is trying to help employers in the Spanish hospitality industry... because he hopes they will staff the restaurants and bars. Been going to Spain regularly for 24 years. I've never experienced any anti-tourist backlash. Since I am a traveler and like Spain very much, I made the effort to learn Spanish. I eschew all the tags of being a tourist by leaving at home all my ballcaps and sporting teams related clothing. I dress conservatively, speak cordially and act as a guest in their home. It pains me to think of towns in the north being overrun with tourists. Once it happens it will never be the place you came to because it was special. On a month long trip from Barcelona to Potes, across the north of Spain, I interacted only twice with English speaking tourists and that's the way I like it.

The north of Spain is more industrial and tourism is specialized in rural tourism, hiking, horseback riding, nature... It would be a horror if hordes of drunk British people appeared on the green beaches of northern Spain, the people of that area are rougher than those of the Mediterranean and conflicts would break out very quickly. A Benidorm in Asturias? horror!

I live in the Washington DC metro area-about 25 minutes west of Dulles International AirPort. I get annoyed and triggered by waves of tourists in DC. The traffic is terrible, visitors drive worse than locals-and that’s saying something, difficult to find a place to park, too many tourists lack common courtesy and respect, tourists/pedestrians don’t observe crossing lights, they clutter the sidewalks with scooters and e-bikes and zip by pedestrians at max speed; sometimes resulting in collisions with them; resulting in injuries.

Hi Stuart. Many thanks for these updates. We have a property on Costa Calida. Are you aware of any progress being made on the 90 day rule change? It’s gone very quiet since the French dropped their proposal to change theirs. It feels like it’s disappeared into a black hole with no progress updates at any stage from the Spanish government.

I was reading that in some areas Spanish people are no longer choosing to dance until dawn. Instead, they are going for a leisurely tapas lunch. Then a gin tonic or two before heading to a club at about 16.00. Leaving to go home and to bed at about 23.00. Tardeo. Alicante is one example. On a different note, last year I spent months going to the hospital several times a week. When I asked the younger nurses what their plans for the weekend were. Those under about 30 said to go home and sleep. While those older than that were planning to dance the night away.

If certain Spanish resorts want to attract a 'better class of tourists' all they need to do is close the tacky bars that encourage irresponsible drinking and close up early. There are lots of people from the UK who likes the more quiter, chilled atmosphere

Spain is no longer like it was in 1975. Tourism is important, yes, 12.5% of the GDP, but the United Kingdom is similar, tourism is 10.3% of the GDP. Does the United Kingdom live off tourism? No, is it important in your economy? Yes, would the United Kingdom collapse without tourists? No, would it have problems? Yes. Well, Spain, the same.
@ESiesta.9 ай бұрын
Our general attitude towards tourism is fine as long as the tourists behave normally (drunk and shouting is not normal). A large part of the income comes from tourism, both domestic and foreign. Why would we forego that income? The legal rental of apartments to tourists is probably not complained about much, it is regulated (and taxed). However, there is a lot of illegal renting (untaxed), which nobody likes. If you have a correct long-term rental contract, you cannot normally 'just be kicked out' because the landlord wants to rent to tourists, there is probably something else behind it. A landlord is not obliged to renew short-term contracts (less than a year). May be different rules for different regions of Spain. There are always a few people who try to blame their bad lives on others and they may feel better because they give some message on a wall or the Internet. And yes, Asturias is a very nice holiday destination. I live in Malaga, Andalucia but love to go on summer holidays in northern Spain.

Tourism is Spain makes around 14% of GDP and going down as others sectors grow faster. Just to put some stats into the myth that without tourism Spain’s economy would collapse. Is it important? Yes absolutely because it employs a large amount of people. Is it the main driver of the economy? Nope
@leecromer32899 ай бұрын

I am Spanish and I live in the Canary Islands. It's not that we don't love tourists, we live largely with them. The problem is when with the same salary as years ago, you face having your rent raised, because if you don't pay it, a tourist will pay it. Because they have started to remove rents for normal housing and make them touristic. Because they say that there is no housing, but they do not stop building high-end apartments that are mostly intended for foreigners for a few months a year.

Sorry i missed the part where that piece of news highlighted *only* UK tourists... Starting to think you're as full of it as they are.
@ArosIrwin9 ай бұрын
The headline is specifically "British tourists slammed" when, in fact, the message is for all tourists, not just British ones and, as explained, English is just the best language to address the largest number of people. A more truthful headline would have been "tourists slammed", dropping the "British" because, as explained, it is not a message aimed only at the British. The article then continues to talk specifically about "British tourists" as though they were the only target. They are not and as such, specifying that the tourists are British is, at best, unneeded and, at worst, purposefully misleading. If you genuinely missed this, you need to work on your media literacy.
@Animalistic99 ай бұрын
@@ArosIrwin the headline reads 'Spain tourist backlash: Britons 'will take money elsewhere' as Spain proposes new rules on UK tourists' They nowhere state *only* UK tourists. Why would GB news talk of how that would affect any other tourist than those travelling from the country they report for? To say that GB News "Highlight it as being *only* UK tourists" is what is misleading.
@Animalistic99 ай бұрын
@@ArosIrwin more from the article "A new initiative that could see Spanish bars and restaurants close early has been hit by backlash, with concerns *tourists* will travel elsewhere on holiday" "The Balearic Islands such as Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca are popular holiday hotspots and depend on tourism from countries *such as* the UK." Again they go on to talk about how this will affect Brits because they are *a British media company*
