1580 - 1640 wasn't an occupation. That suggests some kind of military intervention by force. That wasn't the case at all. It was the period of the Iberian Union where the Spanish Monarch also ruled Portugal via inheriting the throne. Portugal was not occupied. Many of the ruling classes welcomed it, although attitudes started to change as a result of the poor management of the country, its territories, and Spain's conflict with Britain.

@@mimosomim There was a relatively small military force that accompanied Phillip II of Spain and defeated the forces of the Prior of Crato. However, many Portuguese nobles and people in position of power supported Phillip and in fact obtained/retained powerful positions. It was under Phillip III when many Portuguese nobles lost positions of power and influence, and, as a result of continued mismanagement, that the sentiment start to really change. Nothing here really suggests a 'military occupation'. If you disagree, by all means, add to the conversation; don't insult people by suggesting they have a 'lack of studies'.

D. Sebastião was crazy to go to the war.... Filipe was grandson of D. Manuel and he took the country by force too, was Catarina, also granddaughter of D. Manuel, was also a strong candidate... D. António tried to keep the crown as well, but D. Filipe imposed himself... the first two still gave some independence to Portugal, but with all wars Spain was involved with plus a more centralized governing of the 2 crowns from Spain led to discontentment from Portugal... hence the 1640 revolution....

Hello Doctor. I didn't forget, I don't know about the Olivença case. 😂 What is that?
@mendesjosr44382 жыл бұрын
A small town controlled by Spain since 1812. The treaties that put an end to the napoleonic wars returned it to Portugal. Spain never did though claiming it was swapped for what is today Uruguay. It is the only territorial dispute Portugal has. In Portuguese maps that bit of the border is not marked, Portugal refuses any act that might imply recognition of Spanish sovereignty, as an example, it paid for the construction of a small bridge connecting Elvas to Olivença on its own so Spain would not claim that going halfways meant the Portuguese had recognised that as Spanish territory. The town of Olivença is worth a visit. It feels very Alentejana. It uses a flag in the portuguese municipal style and Oliventinos used to speak Portuguese until Franco severely repressed its use. Note that there are a few other towns and villages in Spain, along the border that traditionally spoke Portuguese but the Portuguese never claimed. So this "irredentism" is not a cultural-linguistic one but one based on a sense of injustice and violation of our territory. Do a research on the Guerra das Laranjas. Oh the other "territorial issue" that portuguese diplomacy bumps into every now and again is the designation by the Spanish of some of the Ilhas Selvagens as rocks and not islands. The difference is that an Island grants territorial waters a rock does not. Not a real conflict, maybe just some sort of a game between the two diplomatic bodies but my Diplomacy Professor, a retired ambassador, said that the Spanish would always try it on and the Portuguese would always protest and amend. A game but words matter if you know the reason why spain has an exclave in French territory: Llivia, you will understand.

Well today its mostly friendly relations. The last tension would say was pre WW2 or after the Portuguese revolution of 74 that in fears of Portugal becoming communist, there were some rumours of a possible Spanish intervesion. But that was mostly it. Portugal today has a friendly relation with Spain. Heck, Portugal main trade partner is Spain. Today Portugal even relates with alot of Spanish problems and culture. Despite both being very diferent, i feel Portugal has a much more unified sence of national identity, in which Spain doesnt. Portugal most diferent regions with more "separate" identity are the Azores and Madeira, for obvious reasons, Spain itself, you almost can say its a country of countries. And in a sence, what solidified Portuguese identity more is not being Spanish/Castillian, there was also Portuguese projects and even portuguese invasions to unify the Peninsula, the concept of "spanish" in the XVI century was like the concept of "British" today, its a island/peninsula with diferent nations but with a common blood/identity. Things changed, but alot also of the confusion, is that, alot of these wars, was with Castille, not the entirity of what is today Spain. Portugal was more friendly with the Kingdom of Aragon for a while then Castille. Heck, i think even today, alot of portuguese wouldnt mind about talks of a Iberian Federation with Spain, times changed. But like i said, Portugal has a very strong sence of identity.

The Treaty of Tordesilhas, signed in the Castilian village of Tordesilhas on June 7, 1494, was a treaty concluded between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of Castile to divide the lands "discovered and undiscovered" by both Crowns outside Europe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Tordesillas

Portugal is Nation State, Spain is a coercive federation of several nations (Portugal is older than Spain). Actually Spain is not the accurate name of the State, its Castille (their language is castillian). This issue comes from the end of Roman Empire and after 10 invasions of Spain and 3 from Portugal , the issue remains. Inside Spain things are not better since many "spanish" still remember the Empire of Aragon ...and civil war to reinstate independent nations inside Spain is a frequent issue.

Most of young Portuguese are denied the true history of Spain against Portugal, professors and books simply don’t give it the attention it had in the past because you need a sense of Europeism in EU, media usually call them “hermanos” (in SPANISH)! If there’s a state that Portugal can NEVER see as a brother is Spain, the Iberian identity was made up for Spain to have something to relate Portugal with them, this is terrible many people call themselves as Iberian, name of peninsula should be something like “Luso-Iberian”, it’s would more honest since Iberian are the folks who occupied eastern part of peninsula and almost all Andalusia. Current Portugal territory (westernmost part of peninsula) has no relation with the Iberian tribes that existed in the times of Roman Empire
