The word vale is of a fairly modern usage, it’s predecessor is the word estamos, which has obviously become archaic. You will still hear it being used in novelas of a previous age like “La Moderna” or “La Promesa”. I still remember using it as a child when it was the only term used.
@stevejones2310Күн бұрын
Could you give an example of the use of estamos as an alternative to vale?

A very valuable lesson! My wife and I experienced this on last visit to Valencia, the coffee shop owner used the phrase "vale" everyday when I placed an order. I did not learn that in my lessons and also discovered the difference in Latin American and European Spanish, thank you for your helpful and enjoyable content, P.S. love the food video's!

Maybe every now and then look up a word in a dictionary? OMG, English speakers :) BTW: do you know what bilingual means? It means that someone can speak 2 languages... So then what would tri-lingual mean? Well, it means that someone can speak 3 languages... So then what would mono-lingual mean? Well, it means someone is either British or American :)

Bale is French for Basel as well :) And balen means to be annoyed, in Dutch... and in English it's a large wrapped or bound bundle of paper, hay, or cotton. None of this has anything to do with anything, though 😂😂

So great! I am pretty much fluent in Spanish here in California and we almost never hear Vale, sometime you hear vaya used almost the same way vale is in Spain, but its not the exact same. Vale la pena we do hear that, but not the vale vale vale to say OK OK OK.

Maybe this is for the same reason as to why we do not have forest fires here in my country, and you do have those in California?

Imagine how important is the word "vale" that , the most important novel in the history of the world "El Quijote" , or "Don Quixote" ends with the word..."vale". "Vale" comes from latin and in latin means "Vale is a greeting used at the end of a conversation or a letter. It may be translated as “farewell”, “good-bye”, “take care” or “stay strong”. The form is imperativus praesentis activi from the (2nd conjugation) verb valeō, valēre, valuī, valitum. It literally means: “be strong, be healthy, prevail”. It is a congate to such common English words as valour, valiant, value, available, evaluate, valid, etc." In Old spanish "vale"was like . good bye , that´s all , etc...Now means Ok , All right and all those things you said before.

Why do you use the cost word for confirmation? What is the etymology of the use? Interesting!

Se te ha olvidado el otro orden, que suena incluso mejor, suavizando un vale, que es una aceptación ( sumisa o resignada). Comemos a las dos? Venga, vale!😊

There is also "¡Vale ya!", but its meaning is "Stop it!" or "Cut it out!". Usually, from parents to their children when they are mischievous. And others as "Ya te vale", but too slangy.

Interesting, here in Mallorca, the V in vale is pronounced as a V, along with viernes, vamonos, verde.
@Ingridfransson3 күн бұрын

@Niravata2 күн бұрын
@@Ingridfransson it's write, right?

Obviously this is because in Mallorca they speak a more Catalan type of local language, like in BCN and Valencia. The V gets a little softer, i.e. less B-ish
@finnstadel3 күн бұрын
I think there may be some regional differences. Certainly in the Madrid region those words are used a lot. In the Valencian region is not equally common in my experience and may even be an indication that you are not originaly from there. Then again just speaking Castellano perfectly is an indication that you're not from there. Of course in South American Spanish, those words are used in a much stricter way and replaced by other words or sentences which are also good in Spain. In fact when it comes to formalism the latin Spanish preserves the old deeds which I think is deeply missed by many older people in Spain.

Thank you for this. These are the sort of things you don't get taught in normal Spanish lessons Another two words I have found make it sound as though you speak better Spanish is 'pues' and 'entonces' (well and then). They also give you time to think about what you are going to say next. Maybe you could feature the correct use of these in a future video.

@@LisaJayneRadfordif you listen closely to Stu’s examples he is sometimes more b and sometimes more v. This is because the Spanish pronunciation is borderline between the two.

Dos palabras no te hacen sonar como un nativo, no para nada. Se necesitan muchos años de aprendizaje, esto lo sé por experiencia propia, y aún así, nunca vas a sonar como un nativo. Sin embargo, hay que empezar por algún lado.

Being fluent in Andaluz means we can easily coverse in Spanish anywhere in the world.
