The Portuguese had a brutal record in the Americas as a colonial power. The most horrendous abuses occurred in the colony of Brazil: natives were enslaved, murdered, tortured and raped in the conquest and early part of the colonial period and later they were disenfranchised and excluded from power. Individual acts of cruelty are too numerous and dreadful to list here. Portuguese Conquistadors in Brazil reached levels of cruelty that are nearly inconceivable to modern sentiments. Today, Portugal is the Biggest Racist country that i have ever lived in. I feared for my life there and i consider myself lucky that my family got out alive! I have never lived in such poverty (Sopas dos Pobres everyday) 40% unemployment rate and 60% of the population earn less than $932 USD per month, and that’s considered Middle Class here! Within the European Union it is the worst of the worst place to live in. The bottom line is the bulk of the People in the poor country of Portugal exist in a brainless comma that is fed by Ignorance, anti-Spanish hate, and severe Racism of pretty much everybody that isn’t Portuguese! And, Portugal started the Global Slave Trade in 1441 so it is definitely NOT a safe place for Blacks!!

As a Brazilian, Portugal did not start slavery, and also the world runs on money. They traded for slaves and African kingdoms kidnapped blacks. See Portugal got slaves due to Spain, England, france,dutch because they were gaining a lot of land and a lot, I mean a lot of portguesse settlers died in Brazil so they got slaves to make money, and be a powerful nation to not be messed up. Moral of the story, The world runs on money

Don't forget the thriving Arabic-muslim slave trade that existed centuries before that!! And the spanish had just finished the reconquista at the time they started colonizing the americas seeking for ways to expand their position against european threats. Europe was in a power struggle that fueled colonialist attitudes and sadly racism. But Looks like racism is not exclusive to Europeans nor cruelty and oppression... That's the less told side of history though.

The population was sparse in North America compared to other regions where it was heavily populated. There was no alternative but to make indigenous allies to topple the Aztecs. There are claims in this video that don't add up, perhaps the most outstanding is the one talking about a 20 million population depleted down to 200 thousand due to the 'brutality of the Spanish Conquistadors''. I believe the sources used are more based on the old propaganda from the British Empire of the XVIII century than from current historians. I strongly suggest the audience to research further on this topic.

Actually, @sinvila1 it is you who have sipped from the cup of propaganda. While it is true that a Black Legend was developed as propaganda, the Spaniards who were in charge in this early period were cruel and violent and many did sadistic things. Read the original accounts and you will see. American colonists were just as bad, later in time, but in some cases, in slightly different ways.

It's amazing that the intelligence required to understand this level of history exists and is necessary at all, but all so unnecessary of a history regardless of our intelligence. Imagine if our level of intelligence was available the whole time, and it's sad, but imagine now what our intelligence could do free of this history, with perspective and respect to what is? Impermanence is in physics, so perhaps we can step past the barrier if we can all see it? This is such smart presentation of the history, thank you!

The Encomenda system was nothing at all even remotely new to the locals in Mexico at that time: the Amerindians practiced slavery quite happily, and the Aztecs certainly had a feudal system at that. They saw nothing at all even remotely new or unusual about that mix or those traits in society; the tongue was strange to them, but the social structure was nothing all that unusual to them.

The general conduct of the English and Spanish respectively may well have been shaped by their theologies; the English for the bulk of that time were a really rather violent brand of protestant; and this is reflected in US history: for when the settlement of the West was happening- drastic differences in treatment of the Amerindians happened depending on the majority views of the group in question. Protestants tended to try to exterminate the Amerindians whereas Catholics would resort to trade and attempts to convert, or leaving them to their own devices if at all possible.

NO, NO AND NO. Imperial Spain's history is equal to the history of the Catholic Church. Having said that, history on the Spanish empire told by English sources is 99% of the times just a one big distortion of events due to evident reasons such as to the fact that England renounced Catholicism to convert to anglicanism, thus it constantly needed to provide herself a justification for breaking apart from the Church (and still needs), as well as England was for centuries an economic rival of Spain. I could go clarifying point by point, however I'm just going to straighten out one point: 2:05 You really believe Spanish kingdoms in America were founded based on Gold, Glory and a little bit of God??? Whoever person with a slight common sense that has actually been to places founded by the Spaniards in American continent will see that universities, hospitals, aqueducts, bridges, roads, forts and castles were built for ALL the inhabitants. COMPARE that built infrastructure to what the ENGLISH, DUTCH, BELGIAN, FRENCH, etc. did in their colonies, and then you will see the HUGE difference between one and another. And by the way, The Catholic Monarch - Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand sent Christopher Columbus across the "Sea Ocean", (Today known as the Atlantic Ocean), because they were seeking to attack the infidel Ottomans from the rearguard, that's from Cipango (Today Japan). I didn't see the whole thing but this is definitely the last time in my life to ever see a video about Imperial Spain's history told by foreigners - English, French, Dutch, German, etc., ugh!

Very very good video. Should be required in history class. A few observations. 1) the Spanish did not treat their native allies worst than the Aztecs. The Spanish married their aristocracy and created mestizo majority we find ruling in current day Mexico. 2) the native population was devastated by European diseases but there is no evidence that anywhere near 90% of the total native population died. 25% is more reasonable. There is an enormous Native American population and mestizo population extending from Mexico via Central America down the Andes from Colombia down to Bolivia and Peru. They are the majority of the population by far. 3) 20,000,000 is the estimated population of the native people from Argentina to Alaska not just Mexico in 1519. Future video should stress the multicultural nature of the Empire from the get go. The Conquest was a nightmare for the Natives but an economic blessing to the Spanish, Portuguese and English. When reflecting on this period of conquest I reflect on the multiple conquest Iberia and Britain endured in their history. Both were conquered by the Romans and later the Germanic Tribes. That was followed by Viking conquering the Brits and Moors conquering on the Iberians. At the of the day the Conquered People of Iberia and Britain conquered the world.

I think the 90% numbers come from many sources that claim that between 90 and 95% of natives died of diseases, what people are constantly missing is that those numbers are taken out of the totality of deceased. This is, 90-95% of the people who died during the conquest of America died of disease.

“Colonisation “ is an English word that depicts what England did to his colonies and by extension, English extrapolated to other powers like Spain, assuming they did the same. That’s a mistake. Spanish Empire did NOT have colonies. Mexico was not a colony. It was Spain (with the same rights) Argentina was not a colony. It was Spain Colombia was not a colony. It was Spain Venezuela was not a colony. It was Spain Guatemala was not a colony. It was Spain Etc… The imperial model was completely different between England and Spain

@@manso998 You are quite wrong. The English enslave and took colonies (Colony: where there is a metropoli, with all rights and perks, controlling everything in their own benefit, while the colonies has less rights and abused systematically to maintain the metropoli) . This model was later extended retroactively in the interpretation of previous powers. Spain was the first global empire. They made 37 Universities in America , thousand of cities, hospitals and cathedrals for indigenous people. The rights were equal for European Spain than American Spain. There was not a Metropoli (not Madrid). The most powerful city of the Empire was Mexico DF, in New Spain (today Mexico). This is because for catholics everyone are equal. Natives and not natives. For the British, only white Anglo-Saxon are “the chosen ones” because this is how Protestantism works. Dividing the society in groups (that’s why racism exist mainly in Protestant based cultures, like Germany or USA). So no, Spanish Empire was NOT the equivalent of the British Empire later.
@manso998

@@Nonius9 look up your history, let's take Cortes. He established a villa, which is a town site. Coronado established a settlement a villa/townsite, a colony. Rights were not equal for the natives, regardless of whether they converted or not. Those Spaniards born in New Spain were also considered lesser than those born in Spain. Those who intermarried and had offspring, those offspring were considered lesser. There were castas. Dig a bit deeper and you will learn this. The Portuguese Empire (Portuguese: Império Português) was the first global empire in modern times. Spain rose after that.

Interesting to compare the Spanish and British Empires, no? Here in Quebec, the French colonizers had a similar, more humane (i.e. 'racial' mixing and intermarrying with the Indigenous peoples) imperialism than the British. However, if the Spanish had ultimately defeated the British, and a 'catholic' hemispheric empire consolidated, would there have been an American Revolution? If Washington had been Catholic, would he have dared the Delaware Crossing on Christmas Eve?

You referred the indigenious people of America as Native Americans. The Native American arrived to America in the 1800s. They are not the American Indian. The American Indians were described as copper colored. Slavery in the United States was domestic. In 1660 Virginia past a law that started Domestic Slavery. It states that if an Indian kills a settler then the whole village most pay. The payment was that your land will be given to the settlers, the woman and children were taken as servants. The men were shipped to the carribean, killed or sold as Slaves. It is documented that 300,000 Africans arrived in America from the late 1600s to the early 1800s. The American Indian were used as the bottom of this caste system. In the 1700s Race as a system was created. During this time the Indian was reclassified as Colored. The propaganda of the Indian died from diseases was pushed. Blacks in America was referred to as Negroes because Spain colonized first. The American Indians did not live in teepee. They had established towns and villages before the settlers arrived to steal from them. Native Americans lived in teepee. They set up their makeshift homes eager to squat. They learned Indian culture and sign a treaty to pretend to be the Indian. Now they have a movement to change the mascots to reflect themselves. Native Americans are not the American Indian.

Not sure that's true that indigenous people were at the bottom of the caste system. Everywhere you go across the Americas, blacks replaced native Americans as slaves from the Caribbean to Brazil. Iberian priests even stated that it was better that Africans were used as slaves than native Americans, because blacks were thought of as subhuman and more suitable for that task. Furthermore it's no uncommon for people with obvious African ancestry to pretend their 'Indian' in Latin America as they prefer to perceived as indigenous than be considered to be black.

@@mitchduncan4842 Well Mitch, I'm basing my statement on true history and not the social programming that they have pushed to get the original people's in the US off the land. We were the original land owners in the US. Here the N word was used as a derogatory term for the American Indian. The N word actually meant stingy. They called the Indians stingy because they didn't want to share the land with the settlers. The full name of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968 is the American Indian Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1968. All the massacres that have taken place to the American Indians is to run them of the land. Tulsa was one of many. African Americans ain't African. We are not the same people. Our problems all stem from us being declassified and renamed so many times. Think about how many millions of acres of land the American Negro has lost since the end of the Civil War. Now compare it to what Native Americans lost. They didn't lose any. In fact they gain reservations. The first reservation is thr Gingaskin Reservation in Virginia. Gingaskin was not the tribe name but the settlers renamed it. The word Gingaskin is an hologram. They rename the first reservation as N word skin. The term Redskin does not apply to Native Americans because Red originally was brown. I could go on forever. But it's time you do some research.

There was another thing at work in Cortez's campaign of liberation of Mexico from the Aztecs that led to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, for in addition to the culture of death that the Aztecs practiced... a downright almost truly satanic one at that; the Spaniards' arrival was in a period of the Aztec calendar that prohibited the Aztec government from doing anything even remotely involved in war. It was seen as a treaty with the deities they had, and Montezuma II had been a high priest in the Aztec religion prior to his ascension to the throne, so he would've known this. Not only that, but Cortez was mistaken for an Aztec deity; which was another accidental stroke of luck for Hernan Cortez.

I, for one, really do doubt the false claims of forced conversions of Amerindians by the Spaniards; Charles Hapsburg V (the fifth) of Spain was Cortez's boss in terms of management; and at the same time as that, he was dealing with the Lutheran revolts; why be civil towards one and not the other? I think, therefore, that it really was a case of too much to manage from Madrid as far as logistics goes; but Cortez was just about his most moral of all of his soldiers... and he has a good reputation in the Mexican chronicles at that for being merciful and just to the Aztecs. That may have been influenced by his predessor's conduct, however, Montezuma II was known to be killing people left, right, and center in his fake religious "celebrations"; as well as the reality is that he buried his own sister alive as a human sacrifice- good golly, man- that's wrong to do!

Tere were probably forced convertions at the begining though. i really, trully think, the Spanish Empire is unique in the sense that no other empire no world power had ever edicted so many laws of protection against the people it had conquered, no other empire had considered those he had conquered as subjects of the crown, with the same juridical status than its people, Spaniards. No other Empire had ever trully worry and try to integrate the conquered population so quickly as equals. We know of course in the practice it was way more complex, but the number of laws, and the intention of the monarquy of equal and fair treatment is there, and it's like nothing ever made before. So I would say the Spanish empire does certainly stands out, and not for the wrong reasons. However, it is obvious that the first years, and even decades, were a complete mess. It's only antural, it took at least 2 moths to sail from Spain to Cuba, then to Mexico. I'm pretty sure there were quite a lot of forced, or at least semi-forced convertions at the begining. Sure, most priest won¡t engage in that, since they knew that force convertion was not a honest convertion at all (they knew from the Jews in Spain), but I'm also sure that many did try to impose their believes. Technically, forced convertions were forbidden, but realitically speaking, for sure some did happen at the very begining. I mean, it's only natural that the "conquerors" imposed their believes upon the "conquered" people. Sad, but that's how it's always been, and it was no different in America, except that the law was exceptionally good, but at the very begining, law enforcement was almost nowhere to be found.
@chissstardestroyer

@@goodaimshield1115 Yes, the Spanish empire was a truly Christian state; the "black legend" was simply protestant mythology, and must be completely disregarded, as well as any claims of forcible conversions, at all, any. In fact, that kind of "missionary" activity is expressly forbidden, and always was prohibited, as any conversions like that are automatically invalid, and rightly expel anyone who engages in them or tolerates them from the Church, effective immediately upon being agreed to attempt, and pretty much forever. As for the Jews in Spain, and Jews anywhere who convert, and intellectual conversion is always the first step; it is never a repudiation of their Jewish faith, it really is a more complete following of the Law of their faith- remember the Founder of Christianity was and is Himself a Jew; so antisemitism on the part of Christians is nonsense. *Most* often when you initially subjugate any area law is something that comes later on in administration; but for a record of an ethnic Aztec in those days, I recommend the story of Juan Diego- he was one, and he, if he could, here and now, explain that the faith he converted to is a far better deal than what he had! And that does *not* touch at all on the idea of political power or acceptance. To the average Mesoamerican subject of the Spanish Empire, conquest was simply a shift of where the taxes go; beyond that, not much overall... it was merely a change in the center of government, in Juan's case, it meant he was then subject to the regulations of Charles V, not Montezuma II, who himself was frankly a tyrannical butcher at best. Mexican history does tell of Cortez as the most merciful governor they had, and that says a lot in and of itself; records to look up would be the court cases, say about tax regulations and late taxes due to harvest problems and the like, as well as the responses of the defendants. Let us not forget that people accused of crimes against the state regularly tried to get their cases transferred to the Inquisition as far as a far better deal to begin with; the Inquisition never killed anyone, nor tortured anyone, they were expressly prohibited from that kind of action, what it was was an attempt to liberate those who were accused of engaging in the devil's gang, via the occult, by talking sense to them. It was a rescue operation, nothing but.

@@goodaimshield1115 These so-called laws were easily ignored anyway, they made little difference to people living thousands of miles away. It wasn't a conventional 'conquest', it's a misnomer to call it that. In the early stages it was mainly native allies who did most of the 'conquering'. not Europeans. Due to introduced diseases mestizos (mixed background) faired better and thrived at the expense of those of pure indigenous ancestry. Over the subsequent decades and centuries it was Westernized mestizos (who comprised the majority, not Europeans, of the population in the colonies) who assimilated the remaining native populations spread across Latin America, a process that took centuries. So calling it a conquest is really not an accurate depiction of what took place in Latin America in this period.
