I had no idea that the Inquisition was still active after the Renaissance. Thanks for another interesting video.

Here’s my family Inquisition story; I guess I owe my existence to that evil institution. My great great great grandfather, shortly after the Napoleonic Wars, inherited an estate in northern Spain near the Pyrenees Mtns. He and his father had apparently been secret Freemasons. The estate manager and he went to conduct some business and when they returned a couple of days later they found the house, outbuildings, and associated village burning and several dead residents (including the manager’s wife). Survivors said it was the Inquisition; someone had denounced him. He and the manager dug up his parent’s secret stash of money and headed for the Pyrenees. The manager was Basque, and a Basque network got my ancestor safely to France and then he sailed to Scotland. In Scotland he attended medical school in Edinburg and married a local lass, taking her last name as his own. He was still quite paranoid about the Inquisition, but by then Mexico had declared independence from Spain and kicked out the Inquisition. He and his wife went to Texas (still part of Mexico) and he practiced medicine and raised a family through the period when Texas became part of the US.

Absolutely fascinating, many thanks for sharing this, if you ask me his life would make a great film, have you ever considered writing a book about him? 😉🙏👍

The Jews had only 4 months to leave or stay and convert to catholicism when the alhambra decree was made. A person who had influence and was tried in the inquisition could possibly get out of it by having a lawyer because I have seen it in the inquisition documents. I had one ancestor who was tried for heresy but her brother in law just happened to be in the service of the King and Queen so he intervened on her behalf and her property was returned. It just depended on who you knew. I had saw several ancestors of mine who were reconciled with the church when they were tried and had to pay fees and were released. They basically admitted to practicing judaism but regretted it and were repenting. They were forced to wear that sambenito and paid a large fine. It was outrageous and awful. They went after everyone, they even went after my ancestors for blaspemy and even one where his poem had to reviewed.

A bunch of sadistic sociopaths with far too much power. It wasn't much better in Italy either.

The Church executed nobody. At the conclusion of the interrogation phase, the person was handed over to the civil authorities and received punishment according to civil law.

You do realize that dying under torture was a big risk, such as when the rack pulled joints apart, or wounds became septic?

The Moriscons were descendants of Spain's Muslim population but also a mixture of ethnicities living in the Iberian penensula. History is never merciful. Jews have lived peacefully in Morocco as an Muslim country for centuries. And in Andalusia until the Crusader colonization came from northern Spain under the banner of falsehood.

Speaking of falsehoods, persecution of Jews did also occur in Moslem countries - only not quite as frequently as in places like Spain. Moroccan persecution of Jews caused them to flee that country in the 20th century. and they have only recently been offered restoration of their properties and repatriation.
