Unfortunately the 90/180 day rule is standard for non EU members, the freedoms we used to enjoy were because we were a member, sadly that now gone. the UK voted to leave the EU so this is the result. We have lived in Spain for 13 yrs and love it, because now you have to jump through hoops to obtain residency many will no longer be eligible.

​@@archer8597 You have the other side of the coin. I spend a good deal of time between Ireland, UK and Germany. Ireland is in a utter mess. There's barely a street in Dublin that doesn't have either Irish homeless or migrant homeless. The tourists are staying away because half the hotels are full of migrants. There's no rental properties available, the health service is a total mess. 20% of the Irish population is foreign born. That in itself is not an issue if all the migrants were housed and working, but they are not. Germany is no different, in 2015 they opened the gates to over 1 million migrants but a huge proportion are not working even though the no shortage of jobs. Every EU country seems to be in a state of emergency right now!

If the Spanish wanted you, and your cash, to stay they would make it happen. A bit unreasonable to expect others to vote to suit your wishes when it doesn’t suit theirs. My main concern was not wanting my family being forced to fight in a war run from Brussels when they have to run every strategy by 27 countries before acting. Irish citizens do not require a visa to enter Spain, but if you are staying longer than 90 days you just register with the Oficina de Extranjeros then you can stay as long as you want, even get a job.

I have never heard of anyone being asked for proof of where they are staying. That rule has always been in place. As for the visa waiver for anyone between 18 & 70 it’s seven euro for three years. Big deal.

I thought you had to do this already. I take a "letter of invitation" with me. It's just an email from someone with legal residence in Spain saying exactly where I will be staying (their address), with start and end dates. Not exactly very onerous. If you're going to a hotel, just proof of booking. We should have a similar system in UK.

Because of the 90 days In 90 days out Rule we have now sold our property in Mijas . We have the money invested in UK , earning 5.5 % and we save 3500 € a year on bills like electricity, gas , water , insurance, IBI , Basura , WiFi etc . When we go back to Spain we know rent a place at an excellent price with no worries about anything. We also now travel mod to different places in the winter , just come back from Australia, last year did Panama India .

Absolutely! If you are just looking for a holiday then 90 days should be enough. If you intend to move permanently or even semi-permanently then apply for residency and if you have a holiday home in the EU and want to spend more than 90 days apply for a long stay visa, it is not exactly onerous. You need a passport, an address where you are staying, proof of sufficient funds to finance your stay, some health insurance and promise not to work while in country.

There are plenty of depressed young people, especially those in the run down towns like Blackpool who are suicidal here! You do know that a visa that was planned to be introduced for the many British property owners in France was ruled "unconstitutional" by ae French court. The French Senate and National Assembly both voted to automatically grant long-stay visas to British property owners in France. This would of allowed them to spend as much time as they want in the country without it counting towards the 90-day limit for the rest of the Schengen Area. Looks like the EU is making it as difficult as possible for nation states to draft their own legal requirements..

@@PopularesVox Not true I'm afraid...... A new law which would have allowed British second-home owners an automatic long-stay visa has been rejected by a French court for being “unconstitutional”. The amendment to an immigration bill would have let British expats with a second home or holiday home in France stay for more than 90 days without needing a visa. It had already passed through the two houses of the Senate but was rejected for being unconstitutional and having no direct or indirect link to the immigration bill. The decision to reject the amendment is final as there are no appeals in France’s Constitutional Court......... So that is that!

Long term British residents in Spain had years to fix their permanent residency. If they didn’t then tough. Maybe some had dodgy, criminal pasts and didn’t apply. When travelling around Spain especially you will get the police knocking on your door to check on your paperwork quite regularly... especially if you look like you are setting up a camp site (awning, barbeque, rubbish, been there more than a day or two)

@@mal6232 personally as someone who respects the law ie does not park in wrong places and do Non Camping things I have never had problems with the police. On the contrary they have always been helpful. If you are in your motorhome and have your log book, receipts for fuel, shopping, any sites used, and importantly your shipping details, and can clearly show you are on your hols you will not have problems. And you can travel for 90 days total, not 30 as you quote. This is rules the EU has made for 3rd country visitors. Had the UK still been in the EU they would also be following the rules. There is nothing to fear if you follow the rules and can show receipts as suggested. They are keeping a watchful eye for the one's overstaying. Nothing wrong with that. Illegals are a different matter and all civilised countries have that problem due to them wanting what we already have. There appears to be a lot of Brits that think the rules are not for them.

As someone who has bought a holiday home post Brexit I was well aware of the Schengen 90/180 day rule. I would never want to stay more than 183 days as I would then be classed as a tax resident which could have issues establishing with the UK authorities as to where my permanent residence was even though I am a UK citizen. My question is what is the logic behind the 90/180 day rule??? Why not allow any non EU third country spend their 180 (183) days however they want as long as they don't overstay. The UK allows non UK citizens travelling as tourists to do this. So if I was from Spain and bought a UK holiday home I could use my 180 (183) days in whatever combination I wanted to. If anyone can explain why the Schengen zone EU decided on the arbitrary 90/180 rule I would love to hear as I genuinely can't understand the logic behind it!

To be honest for the majority of Brits this isn't a problem - not many gone afford a 1 week holiday let alone a 3 month stay in the Schengen area. 🤣. For those retired & looking to migrate and have the means to support themselves there is the option of NLV & Golden Visa etc What is a shame is young people no longer have the freedom to think 'lets take a year out and go work in a bar in the Costa del sol' etc - this really impacts the opportunity of the youth. But we may join the EEA who knows

Come to the uk illegally you get a hotel food and money and in the end a house but stay in Spain to long you get deported and fined.

I hitchhike from England to Morocco through France and then Spain and then boat to Morocco. So that won’t be allowed anymore to be in Spain without accommodation.

I am sick of comments saying we voted for this almost as many voted against as for. It was marginal. Also the agenda was pure lies. I hope the Spanish economy collapses like it did in 80s. Brits will vote with their feet. Spains economy is in dire trouble as are most in EU but Spain relies on tourism. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. I used to love the country and their people but their politicians are full of hatred

In case you hadn't noticed it is the UK that is in recession, we also have some of the highest costs of energy in the world, having to import Spanish and all EU food now with added costs. We have dismally low productivity, the highest taxes since WW2, foreign investment fell off a cliff just like tourism to the UK and our public services have been systematically destroyed. Our public utilities and NHS have been sold off and our poorest 20% are now poorer that the poorest 20% of Poland, Romania and Lithuania for the first time in history. Meanwhile Spain is feeling a resurgence as many, many more EU nationals are now visiting their country and seeing all it has to offer. Even little old Greece is enticing the US dollar away from the UK as Americans visit in the highest numbers ever. I think you may wish the Spanish economy to fail purely to justify your poor decision? I don't think your wish will be coming true anytime soon, do you?
