About the pot holes, I don't know I've you've heard, but in a town on the mountains they celebrated a huge pot hole's birthday. The community got tired of waiting for the Departamento de Carreteras (I'm not sure what the English equivalent would be), so they did this very sarcastic birthday party and then filled the pot hole themselves using materials that they bought themselves after everyone in the community pitched in with money. The reason why people are so patriotic is because until 1952-1953 it was illegal to show our flag. You could be arrested by the Feds if they saw you even with a tiny one. One of our hombres ilustres, Don Pedro Albizu Campos was arrested and tortured after fighting for the elimination of the colony status and for the right of puertorricans to have equal treatment as the states.

You’ll read stuff after the hispanoamerican war and how the transition was; the history that is not being teach at schools. In my experience; i never had a Puerto Rico history class at school further more than Taínos lived here then Spaniards came then Estadounidenses, learned more at the university, then just by reading other books on my own.

I lived in Puerto Rico for just over six years and absolutely LOVED it! You were correct, though, about how challenging it can be to get things done. That being said, I learned tolerance, patience, and how to 'go with the flow.' I also ran a business and experienced all the rules and regulations that went along with it. I remember a US-tourist that entered the cafe where I was working complaining to her husband about the way things were done in Puerto Rico and "how much better it is in the states." I got sick of overhearing her rambling and asked her 'Excuse me, ma'am. Do you go to your neighbor's house and try to rearrange their furniture?' She said, "Of course not!" I replied 'You are a GUEST here and Puerto Ricans like their furniture the way it is.' I then pointed the way to the airport. Puerto Rico, like anywhere else, has its positives and negatives. Could I live there again? Absolutely, in Guanica, Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo....yes, 'en la Isla.'

I've been in San Juan for about a month now for work and have 2 more weeks. It is a beautiful island and most of the people I've met have been amazing. I haven't had the chance to explore as much as I want, but I am scheduled to come back at the end of January for about 6 more weeks. The island, the culture, and the people are all beautiful! Being from the island, I'm happy with the information you provided but I do have to tell you, you live in the best part of Puerto Rico, San Juan, which is basically kept in perfect condition in most areas for tourist. The xenophobia is not just because of our past, but also because Puerto Rico is usually portrayed as a vacation destination by americans and it gets exhausting to only be seen as a vacation place, even if we benefit from it. I'd also like to welcome you both to explore the other sides of Puerto Rico, not right now, but theres alot more culture I think you both would love. For example, El Carnaval de Ponce, El Festival del Juey o Cangrejo, etc. Other than that, great video!! And ignore the xenophobes, enjoy your stay!

as a puerto rican from the states, i think the xenophobia is a result of continued colonialism, which i'm so happy you touched on. act 60 directly benefits americans coming to puerto rico over puerto ricans who often have to leave because they cannot afford to live in their own home country. tax breaks for wealthy americans does encourage gentrification, and is neo-colonialist. the jones act and debt has acted as its own hurricane on the archipelago and its people, so this distrust and anger is warranted. i am angry and i don't live there, though i wish to one day. i think the best thing you can do as someone who isn't boricua is listen to puerto ricans and fight with them against gentrification, against the jones act and the tax breaks for foreigners, and talk to other gringos and foreigners to educate them. if puerto rico is your home, cherish the people and their needs, and uplift them.

Your videos are very thoughtful, caring, and enjoyable. Thank you so much for this! My husband and I visited Durango, Mexico a few years ago where his family is from. We hit a huuuuuge pot hole (which was covered by what we thought was a small puddle) and damaged our rental car badly. I know the two of you have the best of intentions and you have empathy/compassion for those who have been colonized and oppressed. Many groups in the U.S. have experienced this (Asian Americans, Latinos, African Americans, Indigenous peoples, etc.). . .Even though Hawai'i may have statehood and yes the residents can "vote," many Native Hawaiians have had to endure centuries of colonialism, land dispossession, cultural theft, etc. as well. I'm not sure "xenophobia" is what Puerto Ricans are expressing when they distrust outsiders. Rather it's more a reaction to the centuries of oppression and perhaps a sense of empowerment and self-determination (including the "flag-waving"). . . It seems both of you are very aware and willing to learn and to understand various Puerto Rican perspectives (those who want Independence & Sovereignty, those who want to become the 51st state of the U.S., or those who want to remain a territory). . . Thank you for addressing some of these issues with care, sensitivity and respect.

I am 61, my Partner is 67 and retired. Our primary residence is in Miami. We purchased a vacation/retirement home in PR last year. I am going to take early retirement at 62 so that we can spend most or our time in PR. But Miami will always be our primary residence, because we don't want to give up voting in US elections. You should consider taking a early retirement.

I can definitely understand the proudness and love for our culture and island when being suppressed for so many years and treated as a possession without any representation (one of the biggest reasons the US became a country). With regards to PR pride, I remember in the 1980s, when ever flying to PR, when landing, all the passengers would clap and cheer. It still happens today but not as intensely. Just as I was finishing my comment, it’s brought up in the video lol.

History is a big part of PR life. In PR many process are a multiple steps process. The reason for expediters is, have people stand in 3 different lines in 3 different parts of towns for you. Many expediters are a 1 stop shop, for instance for your license, they have an in-house doctor to fill out your paperwork and they print out the forms which are available online (wasn’t always the case), get the tax stamps and you just go with all the correct paperwork and pick up your license. Think of them as your wedding planner and are not a thing of PR, you can find expediters in the mainland as well. Sure you can plan your own, but you do this once and might miss something, they do this for living. In terms of xenofobia. The vast majority of PR are welcoming, yet there’s a minority that is very loud. Additionally, you might think to yourself this is not the way this should be done. This is when people become defensive. It happens even among Puerto Rican’s. Sadly, a good chunk of Puerto Rican’s educate their kids to feel Puerto Rico is less. This is why is ok to throw trash on a beach in PR, even tho they wouldn’t do it in Punta Cana. The education motto is study, and hop on a plane to the mainland. Is non-locals like yourself whom can teach (with all the frustrations it may cause) locals to value this Gem called Puerto Rico. In terms of economy, PR is a high income economy. PR GDP per capita is higher than most if not all of Latin America and even some European countries. In terms of sales, PR has some of the highest sales performance per sq ft in the country (USA). It is easy to live here, but you need to read a lot. Apps, online systems, where to are most knows. Blessings!

The americans made it a crime for Puerto Ricans to display their flag. Once that mandate was rescinded the Puerto Ricans are in everyones face with their flag. I was stationd there when I was in the military. I loved the people and their culture,food,beaches, the land, and the weather. I believe that the United States needs to do more for the people of Puerto Rico if they want to claim the territory. It was a beautiful place when I was there in the 90s.

About 65 to 70 % of our foods you guys mentioned you knew nothing about come from Africa which is why from Cuba, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, aaaall the way down to Trinidad and Guyana share the same dishes and foods but by different names obviously due to language and accents... I know because in my family we are, Puerto Rican, Jamaican, Cuban, Guyanese, Dominican, and Cruzan (St. Croix V.I.) and trust me we are waaaay closer in culture to each other than us Spanish speaking Caribbeans are to Mexico, and central and south America.... But in all honesty I know I'm very passionate about my island and people having and experiencing our own, but I did sincerely and TRULY appreciate this video.. there were truths about it people don't get to see and or experience due to others having control over them, like Bomba being the mother of our music, and etc.

Puerto Rico has been the first Latin American country I’ve wanted to visit when I am able to. I didn’t know there was such a wage gap there. Although there is a certain level of animosity towards foreigners, it still appears to be rather safe...at least in the area you were filming.

Puerto Rico is called the island of enchantment not only because of it’s beauty, but because of the people. We are extremely welcoming and love to have tourists visiting us. COVID, however, has changed that a little bit. This is not the time to visit the island, and people have been screaming it out loud, begging and asking tourists to not come to visit us now. Flight tickets are ridiculously low right now, and people are just taking advantage of it despite of the pandemic. Puerto Rico is struggling, economically, politically and socially speaking, the pandemic is making all of these issues worst.

I hope you get a chance to visit when the pandemic is over. There are a ton of restrictions in place right now, including a curfew from 10pm to 5am every day. Just return from a family vacation in Puerto Rico! The pot holes .. LOL so true! I regret that we rented a Honda Accord, and there were incidents that freaked out the whole family inside the poor sedan. But other than that, really loved the beautiful island. Another thing that shocked me was how expensive it was to eat in restaurants and even the grocery!
