Spark Plug Change | Kia Soul 2014

***This is a 2.0 litre engine. I apologize if I said 1.6**
I decided to change the spark plugs in my 2014 Kia Soul 2.0 liter engine for three reasons...
It's at about 100k miles, it was shaking and vibrating when I was stopping, and it was also making a rattling noise when I was driving it.
I decided to do it myself and save on the expenses from the mechanic shop. It was pretty simple and I tried to be as thorough as possible in this video.
The parts cost me about $30 dollars and it took about 30 mins.

When you pull out your spark plugs you want to check them for oil, which is a sign of a bad head gasket. You really should tighten your spark plugs with a torque wrench, overtightening those can be a disaster. Most modern spark plugs are pre-gapped, which refers to the distance between the metal tong on the top and the center piece of the spark plug. That gap is the distance that the spark actually travels. You can check the gap and correct it with a spark plug gap tool, that looks like a little disc. Great video, shows this is an easy job that no one really has to be scared of.

Patrick...all solid advice. I have a torque wrench but will need a plug socket which is long...I think 5/8. Where would one find the correct torque for each plug for the vehicle. I suspect this specific engine spec is NOT in the owner manual. I guess I could look online. Thanks!

@@CTGDesigner You can use a standard socket extension between the spark plug socket and the torque wrench. According to my quick google search the torque is 15-21 lb-ft, which seems about right.

@@PatrickGessleman Excellent! Thanks! I bought a torque wrench many years ago. Always good to have one in the toolbox. I purchased everything I need to change the plugs including a plug diagnostic tool. I'm also going to replace the PCV valve. Hopefully this corrects the rough idle and disengages the check engine light.

Not necessarily a head gasket, could also be valve cover gasket leak around the spark plug wells.

Thanks for this video. Looks supper easy. I have a '15 soul and it started studdering when i fet up to 50 ir 60 mph and CEL cane one. I took it to auto zone and the code P0303 cane up meaning coil #3 was out. So im going to try this my self. Wish me luck. I cant afford $900 to have them changed by a mechanic

If it’s gdi change them around 80,000 miles if it’s turbo change them way sooner probably 40,000 miles.

You did a good job and touched on all the major points. I'd also add anti seize and electrolytic paste. And you didn't show if your gas line pressure was released before you disconnected. If it sat overnight, it might be fine but if you just got home from store and tried to disconnect it's possible to spray gas in your face. (Disconnect pump relay fuse and turn on car until it shuts off). I can't believe you did this in your favorite sweater. lol. did you get grease on it? Did the car run better after?

That sweater is universal. No grease stains though thank goodness. The gas line did sit over night I was sure of that. Had no clue about the anti sieze and electrolytic paste 😕 (will look into that) The car runs a lot smoother now. No more shakies while idling. Thanks Dave

I have the 2016 Kia Soul 2.0 with the same issue. You cannot remove the coil pack without disconnecting the low pressure fuel line. Where did you purchase the removal tool? I can’t find any fuel line removal tool in my area that will work. Also that was a great job on the video.

I've seen others remove the plug coil without disconnecting the gas line.

Just purchased a used 2012 Kia Soul 2.0l with 155k kms on it, which is close to 100k miles. When put in gear, it idles rough, almost like it is mis-firing but so hopefully it just needs new plugs. In gear, the RPMs is around 500, which I seems low but that it may be just fine once new plugs are in. Thanks Freedom Chaser!

@@FreedomChaser I notice with my engine cover, it doesn't state, GDi. I'm not entirely sure but I was initially thinking was the 1.6l was the GDI engine whereas the 2.0l was not.

@@FreedomChaser it was still idling rough when in gear, so I replaced the coils. Voila! The misfiring stopped. About $100 for 4 new ignition coils on Amazon. 👍

You probably need new motor mounts shaking and vibrating has more to do with the motor mounts especially if your at 100,000 miles. I had the same problems replCed the cv axles and had way more shaking.. highly recommend doing the trans and engine motor mounts takes alot of vibrations away and better for your motor

Yep. It ran much better after the swap. Don't have the car anymore, so I'm not sure if it's still going strong or not.

Did you check the gap on the old plugs as a reference?? The new plugs gap on the 2014 is: .044 inch The video shows the old plug gap appears much more than .044

Mechanics tip: put Anti Seize compound on the threads of the new plugs. Start the plugs in by hand (no wrench handle) for the first few turn. If there is resistance, take it out and do it again.

A tip I learned from a guy who does restoration of plastic stuff that is very susceptible to cross threading is to rotate backwards until you feel it drop into the thread. Have never crossthreaded anything since!

Hey there. I don't have a ton of car knowledge but I think this Soul has been pretty good to me. I didn't really start having anything go wrong until closer to 100k miles. It's great on gas and rides pretty smooth and quiet. The features inside are pretty nice but I got a basic model. You can pay more and get more interior features of course. If you get your hands on one, I recommend checking for any recalls, as I found about 4 of them for this particular model.

We bought this same car new in 2014. It only has about 65k miles on it now, but it has been a fantastic car. 3 of our kids learned to drive on it and it is still going strong (a little beat up on the outside, though).

This video was helpful but sheesh all the other comments about make sure you this and make sure you that, she aint mention all that in the video, i just wat this to be straight forward so i can save some money i have a 2015 Soul, and i need to replace my spark plugs, coil packs, and Valve cover gasket, now it seems like i can kill 2 birds w 1 stone just by replacing the spark plugs i have to take the coil packs out anyway so that helps, but i still need to do some research on how to do the valve cover... but all this "dont over tighten, make sure you do that" is actually making me question myself and now im less confident then when i started watching this video...but thanks?

Lots of shortcuts, no disconnection of wires, no torque wrench to ensure not over tighten. No grease used on ends of coils and didn’t check the gap on each plug 😢

Not sure on the ones she used, but the NGK plugs for the Soul come pre-gapped so you don't have to worry about it.

@@FreedomChaser hi, normally, the spark plug comes pre-gapped but it is good practice to just check the gap between the center electrode tip and the ground electrode. your car user's manual normally have the spec or the shop that you purchased the spark plugs from can provide you that information.
