there are a couple valid reasons for building in a factory, in addition to cost savings, you also have better quality control. Look into manufactured home construction and you might be surprised. I also like the steel beams used in the Denver homes, the I beams that have become standard in new construction are a huge issue of you every have a fire. firefighters cannot enter those homes once they are burning due to those beams, as soon as they start to burn you've lost all structural integrity. in addition to the nasty chemicals that are being released from the glues as they burn.

Nice ideas. The second one (on land), looks more like the house is build to stay on its place forever. So, it’s only a question of how economic that production really is. The floating houses. Well. What’s the point of building them if they are that fragile on water. They actually do that in the Netherlands too. But there they actually could move the house quite easily and the house itself is more stable in water. In that video it looks more like the houses are meant to stay forever too. But then. Why not build them on land? Also I wouldn’t be to positiv that those foundations will last long enough in water. It quite seems that the team didn’t really think through all the possible complications. As seen with all the problems they got with the transfer. They where easy to see from the start. I mean, they didn’t poured the concrete directly onto the platform. Didn’t build the platform to be sinkable. Didn’t think about a crane to lift them. So basically didn’t think about getting the houses from the platform into the water…. What else didn’t they think of ?

We are living in the end times, there isn't much time left before the 7year Tribulation begins, this is all for nothing and it's not fair that one company pushes out all the small builders and handymen. It's kind of boring as well, just one architect and his ideas. I do like the floating home community though. Maybe not a good idea for couples with small kids and pets. Well everything is going to change soon and we'll get a fair system after the 7year Tribulation is over. Accept JESUS CHRIST as your Lord and Savior while you can!

Cool . I used to work for a builder mover in Boston ma for 15 years but I started part time I would take a vaca from regular job and work for him it’s cash . We jack up houses move them to a different location we could spin the house and I did some historic jobs we spun the house that they planned the Boston tea party in . Then we did a school that was built in 1700’s so we had the news paper there the streets had people watching like a parade . I was so pumped I just came back from a deployment I was NG oh so excited and when you make the move your going a idk 2 mph literally walking the house so you get the personal with your surroundings. I had my gateraid my dip on the main beam that sticks out a few feet .I worked full time after the army and it’s hard hard hard work everything is heavy like 50 lbs would be light to us you have the cribbing and your moving hundreds of things at some jobs. I was strong you get use yo it and it’s a lot of down time but you have to be vigilant making sure everything is secure. One mistake the house is ruined if your not level before you start jacking it up you could crack all the walls not every single one it does happen a lot even when you level it the problem may be the house itself

As a local mariner, I'm shocked the lack of planning that goes into transporting top heavy buildings with poor floatation through the Dodd Narrows or anywhere for that matter. Did they consult anyone in the marine industry? Maybe a naval architect, to talk about buoyancy? Did they consult a tide table? Could have saved a ton of time and a ton of money. On second thoughts, why didn't they truck them down to Victoria and launch them there?

I live right on the coast In North Essex UK, we suffered the devastating 1953 floods as did other countries like the Netherlands. They devised floating homes some years ago, while we In the UK have new building requirements to make homes flood proof (to withstand moving water at a certain depth) but designed as NO living accommodation on the ground floor/ but would be just as easy to build floating homes..

I’m sure if your house floated, but still had a brick wall with a flood gate around it, they’d let you do it. The problem is you have to dedicate some of your property to pilings if you’re on land and you’re just trying to avoid flooding. The other problem is the foundations, the concrete ones are expensive and the rest of them aren’t suitable for land use. The concrete ones require a deep draft however, they wouldn’t float unless there was more than 3-4 feet of water in which case the city probably isn’t relying on the homeowner to do flood protection. I’ve always wanted to have a house that was on the beach, floating at high tide and on land at low tide. Two problems however: 1. Utility connections are difficult when your house is always moving up and down 2. The waves might be somewhat of a problem, there’s ways around that but in most cases you’re probably better off with a flood gate. It wouldn’t hurt to have a fully inland wet dock for your boat if you live in a flood area, just build it next to the street so you can open the flood gate to that without flooding your entire yard and house lol.

@@batmscot6149 well the thing is if you had hydraulics you’d have to have hydraulic hoses, and you’d have to have electricity or a gas engine hydraulic pump. With the floating foundation, it just floats. They’re already using the concept in places like Florida, New Orleans, and Amsterdam. All of these places have very tidal areas that flood frequently and have previously had stilt houses. The issue with a stilt house is that the height is fixed, and sometimes it floods more than you expect, and when that happens the stilt house still gets washed away. A house that floats would float away a little bit if it flooded more than you expected, but you can still tether it to your property with an extra long cord so that it can be lifted back up and put right back into place if that does happen. With hydraulics you would still have the same issue as a stilt house, what happens when it floods taller than your hydraulics? Your house gets damaged or washed away. I grant you it would totally work to get the house out of the water in lower waters but if you’re building your house to avoid floods by using stilts or floating foundations then you probably have a lot worse than low waters to deal with. Many people only have low waters, and in this case they simply use a brick wall around their property with a flood gate to close up any openings and water tight the barrier. Although even in inland America it’s been shown that there can still be flood waters higher than the roof of your house so depending on where exactly your house is located will determine the most cost effective method of keeping your house alive. But for high waters, or high tidal fluctuation, the most reliable option is a floating foundation with a hole on each corner for your dock piling so that you don’t float away. I recommend making your dock piling twice as tall as your house, look at your local areas flood waters to determine if it should be taller and make sure you give it a little bit extra in case the water just doesn’t stop coming

I was in that 1953 flood in the Netherlands. Our home had 8 feet of water and mud in it, luckily we were able to be safe upstairs. Many people were not so lucky. It was a horrible time. This disaster caused the Delta works to be built. A system of dikes, locks and huge movable pontoons that closed when storms were expected. Now the worry is that this project will not save us from floods when climate change causes the oceans to rise.

Weather😝 tides😕 timing😢 1st house could have been one story. 2nd could have been 2 and towed a week later. 3rd could have been the 3 story one, towed a week after that.... to minimise drama and learn from the first 2. This is back from 2007. Unfortunately the housing crash caused them to stop at only 15 of the planned 237 houses. However Colorado passed legislation for $40M (March 2022) in grants for “innovative” housing manufacturing which includes several new house manufacturing businesses like “Simple Homes” (which builds and ships panels/sections of houses in a factory environment). Another $400M bill is being considered for housing, 10% of which will again go to companies like this.

I'm guessing at about 12 minutes into this, that this video is taking place after the fact or at least not finished until they finish and so the houses/towns are already built, but IF they ever do build more... when Air-Crete is mixed properly/at the right consistency, it is basically as sturdy as regular concrete and near as light as the Styrofoam, with the added benefit of also floating, much like true lava rock will float, because it is full of tiny air pockets...Anyway they would need to run a test for it's durability to water and if it is good and it can hold the same weight as what they are already using if not more, then they could use it and the foam instead of using the regular waterproof concrete!!! Then they would have a fully floating base/foundation under the house. IF it were me I would design the float to be bigger by 3' on all sides so you have that extra floatation should it ever be needed, but also have like a 3' deck/porch all of the way around and/or buffer between the houses, but mostly for the extra floatation!!! Just my thoughts!!

They are very nice looking floating homes, but placed so close together. You would literally look right into your neighbors home and they into yours. :( The technology on both projects is very interesting. It seemed like somethings were not very thought through and needed to be worked out during the moves. But that may have been done for 'drama'. All in all 2 cool projects!

Looks like 30-50 years given standard conditions. I imagine things like being bumped against the sidewalk or landing on the ground during low tide/heavy loading might reduce that, as could things like flooding/sewage backup, or other impact trauma. Potentially even rust might affect the lifetime of the concrete.

Interesting idea, but.....not really convincing. Like the owners of those homes must always consider, that the weight INSIDE their homes is more or less evenly distributed. What about having a big party with everybody gathering in the living room at the same time? The house would start to tillt I guess. And it is hard to believe, that they didn`t consider the width of the spreader in advance for it to be long enough so the lifting cables wouldn`t harm the houses in any case. Like adding some extra feet for extra security.

Could have connected the barge to the crane while they attach their own Air Pressure valves and Release valve to the barge to allow the air out and water in, to sink it while still carried by the crane and all 4 houses could have been floated off all at once. Afterward begin to pump air into the barge pushing out the water and return it to the surface..

WOW, for a crew that builds for a living, I'm amazed none of them was smart enough to line the barge with visquine or heavy black plastic for the foundation pour. Even with diesel or some other surfectant to release from the wood decking on the barge platform, there is ALWAYS a bit of stick. Considering the vast amount of knowledge we possess with bridge work piling builds and the hydrocrete products for direct water contact with tidal force, I would have expected SOMEONE to at the least GOOGLE something. I guess the Canucks have a limited google base.

I was raised in a house boat. The foundation needs to be wide than the floor plan. The only house that I saw being built with no walkway around it tipped over because it was not balanced

I've researched over the years and am wondering what mix of concrete they're using and why they didn't use some sort of elastomeric long lasting polymer coating on the exterior? I'd used something like with embedded copper or something to prevent growth or at least slow/retard the growth unless wanting. I'd also use close cell foam unless the foam itself is sealed as well. Furthermore, seems a UHPC mix would be the ideal mix to use for the concrete to be absolutely safe. Then again, might be builds only designed to last like 30-60 years versus real materials for generations and maybe 1000+ years.

@@jafinch78 one of the houseboat builders decided that 50 years ago he was going to start a business replacing the old growth giant logs that were used in the 20s 30s as floatation for house boats. He hired a company to make fiberglass logs. It was an excellent choice. My brother owns the prototype. He built a 2 story house on the float. It floats in about 2 feet of water.

I don’t know the details. The man passed away before he could get his business off the ground. He had put an old hour boat on the new foundation and my mother had the foresight to buy it. My sister live in it for a few years bu the house needed a lot of repairs so may brother bought it and built his dream house on it that was 2005 that he got occupancy permits.

Never had any trouble keeping the houseboat I lived on level. Even with wood log floats, and still after we switched to high density styrofoam- Great life- nothing better than living on the water- well I 'spose travelling/RV'ing- like glamping- only it's year round. Either one gets my vote for best lifestyle ever! 💗

It was really amazing and unique however how about the human waste! ? Do they have ideas where to store those waste? For sure it will harm those who under them...well just curious...good luck and stay safe to all of them...

Why didn't they just cut the sides of the barge and use it as a floating platform. That would be better than having a bunch of solo units when they could be stronger together

The bottom of the home will need over hauling as ships and boats have to have from time to time , as long as heat / cooling / stove/fridge and the pluming work ,(throw in a steering wheel ),Float on.....😁👍 Will this be a Tax free zone👍👏👏👏😁

Considering the frequency of natural disasters nowadays, especially tornadoes and hurricanes, I don't trust stickbuilt homes anymore. If florida has taught us anything, its building homes with concrete blocks or if you really have the budget, steel reinforced poured concrete exterior.
