Remember he has a nice house there in florida, likely another one in europe, he has to pay salaries and maintenance on the yacht with is roughly 10% of the purchase price per year. I'd guess the hospital billed him to the insurance company at $20K per surgery and the doctor got at least half of that. The beginning of the video discusses conventional 'shipping'. Cost may be an issue. But they specifically mention that shipping imposes more risk of safety and damage issues. Also, few ports have cranes large enough to lift 165 tons, let alone to a height of 50 feet or more. Also the 165 ton yacht discussed here is considered only a 'small' size mega yacht. Some are over 1000 tons. The largest is 16,000 tons (as much as the transport ship itself). The transport ship is probably limited to ship under ~250 tons. Given this, a.lot of travel and scheduling issues are averted by having this ship able come to various ports.

Some of those yachts are only licensed to be no more than 150 miles from any port! Also, they don't have fuel tanks big enough for a 3,000-mile crossing. It's ironic that small sailing boats can cross the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans with only a two-man crew.
@ulrichkristensen4087
@ulrichkristensen4087 2 жыл бұрын
@@jmchez because they are floating dock queens, take any yacht with a ocean class CE A, and they could do the job, if they have enough fuel, a 100 footer should have at least 7-10000 liter tanks onboard, go slow 10 knots np, but in any ship i would be cautious to cross in the hurricane season 10-20 meter waves are no fun

While I don't envy his lifestyle choice, he put in his time, saved a lot of lives and is entitled to do what he wants without you impugning ill will about his character.. I knew a heart doctor... ridiculous amount of college, followed by an even longer intern period, more tests, never ending seminars/training, almost ALWAYS on call, even when he was not officially 'on call'. Finally at age 61, he started freeing himself to do other activities - got into equestrian riding, bought a Porsche, some fancy woodworking tools, etc. Then at age 62, he suddenly died, of all things, an issue with a stent. He never smoked, rarely drank more than an occasional beer, and was always in good shape. So much for 'the good life'.

@@gregparrott So you think that all of that gave him the 'right' to ridiculously overcharge his patients? You must be a Doctor to justify this Greed.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 3 жыл бұрын
@@BL-jt3qt I'm a doctor? I doubt I know any more about the field than you do, which isn't much. But ignoring your baseless accusation, let's return to what I said. NONE of it attempted to justify the costs, thereby rendering your conspiratorial accusation moot). It just sounds like you're a hard core socialist who supports impugning of a person's character simply based on them making a lot of money (BTW: I'm a democrat). I simply oppose people ranting about someone else just because they made a lot of money. Most of my comment focussed on one, personal experience, that of someone who worked extremely hard for a long, LONG time, paid his dues, and I never begrudged him for doing so. In my first year in college, I took a course in organic chemistry (which makes inorganic chemistry look trite). This is an early prerequisite for getting into the medical field. It didn't take long before I was absolutely sick of the level of rote memorization required and switched to engineering. Having worked 40 years in the field, I look back knowing I never had the discipline it would have taken to become a doctor. P.S. The odds are that a large fraction of his millions were NOT made strictly from surgery. if this doctor is at all like the one I knew, he socked away most of his earnings into investments rather than living lavishly during his decades of service.They're able to hire smart investment firms that only work with 'high value' customers. (that leaves me out). They also hire smart accountants to take advantage of tax laws for businesses. Personally, I would prefer that taxes fall more on corporations than the individual. But, that's the way it has been, and thanks to trump, that imbalance has been made considerably worse. The doctor I knew formed a corporation with three other doctors, both for tax and liability insurance purposes.
@BL-jt3qt

@@gregparrott Two simple facts............ the U.S. Health Care Industry is ranked at being the 37th worst of all of the industrialized countries in the world while being ranked as having the highest costing health care in the entire world. That quite clearly shows that Greed is the priority of the U.S. Health Care System. If this 'doctor' had not intentionally and knowingly overcharged all of his patients, he would not have had all of that excess cash to invest. I laughed at your closing comment of doctors forming a corporation..... the whole health care industry does that to avoid the liabilities, it allows them to literally get away with fraud and murder.
@gregparrott
@gregparrott 3 жыл бұрын
@@BL-jt3qt Yes, I am aware that our healthcare system is a mess. I am also aware that lawyers/litigation are a driver for doctors forming corporations and represent a very disproportionate cost on the healthcare system. Back around 2005, the doctor I knew said that despite never having had a claim filed against him, the hospital required that he form a corporation and cover his own insurance. He paid over $250k/year for liability insurance. Now THAT's a scam. Renowned doctors may be able to set their own price. But most have prices set by some combination of the hospitals, insurance companies, trade unions, etc. I imagine this serves both to keep prices high as well as to prevent one doctor from undercutting another. Aside from the statistics showing how ridiculously expensive our medical system is, I had an accident where it was suggested I be transported to a hospital for observation in case there was a brain injury. Although I felt OK, I said 'sure'. It seemed like they stalled, over 24 hours before doing an MRI, so I wound up spending nearly 48 hours before leaving. Although nothing more was required or done other than tests, the total costs were over $23,000 of which I paid $4700. I'm sure the $18k balance was negotiated way down by insurance companies. If that wasn't bad enough, a couple of straggler bills later appeared from 'independent contractors'. My beef is more with the system, than the individual.
