back in the 70's I worked with another guy to make triplexes from older homes in Kits Point Vancouver. I jacked them up and poured new foundations and made a basement suite where none had existed. I used hydraulic jacks which all fed from the same hydraulic pump, propped them up with I-beams and formed the new foundations. fun and games.

@@13minutestomidnight The title is misleading. Fact. Its called Huge moves. mining is mining drill blast muck and move it to the processing plant. if you want to see gold mining fly to valdor theres 2 mines within town and 4 more within 30 min drive amos and malartic are within 3 h driving as are between 20 and 100 other mines in the abatibi area . they do hard rock underground mines mostly, the klondike days dont work with solid granite which is what there mining in up there chasing veins of quartz ,,between the quartz and granite are veins of gold and the deposits up there are impressive the fireplace in my grandparents house was built with samples from most of the mines in the area and if processed today probably could pay for the building and one or two had "Veins' in them , its dirty dangerous work wet muddy loud and dark mostly.

And how the fuck is that 1 blown tire a problem according to the speaker? He says theyre rushing. Meanwhile the worker on screen, is making jokes being in no rush. Thank god it's not the speaker moving the houses.

Damn, the intro alone in this documentary series awakens my really warm childhood dreams, cuz I used to watch this documentary series back then. It's awesome that they are saving these homes from being demolished by moving them. Hopefully this becomes a big industry in the U.S. and Canada. Help provide employment too. That said, the Quebec Transport Authorities are going to have to work on a new rulebook. Adequate safety measures are a reasonable request, but by the end, they wouldn't let all 3 moving houses on the same highway simultaneously (and they only let the movers know at the last minute).

Wow, amazing work. The town was dying then they discovered more gold to give the town a new life but the houses needed moving. Why then were the jobsworths out to make it as difficult for them as possible. Weighing each house, restricting to one at a time on the freeway, laying planking on the roadway and more, all unnecessary interference from the (obviously bored) authorities.

There might be 200 tons of gold... Is it worth spending 85% of to gain a rather small fraction of it? SERIOUSLY, lets pick up a house ,shake it all up and replant it somewhere? It's not a DAMN tree... WHO REALLY wants an old home damaged in such a way, when they could have a STURDY, NEW home for the same price or less? It's amazing what people can do when they put their mind to it. We built the frickin' pyramids so I guess we can move a town. I think I would have located the new town a bit further than a kilometer away, who wants a huge open pit right next to their house? I hope one of the requirements was that they fill back in the pit when the gold is played out. To put it in perspective if these houses weigh 300 tons, a fully functional freighter on the Great Lakes loaded with iron ore weighs about 80 tons.

@suppresst
@suppresst 2 жыл бұрын
Beware! It becomes apparent that something akin to this developed in the course of making this video - I suspect the house movers for the Quebec town were project low bidders, so probably a disgruntled competitor for the project blew the whistle on the low bidders by alerting the authorities, mid-move, that proper safety equipment and permits had not been obtained. Committed to the documentary (camera crews on site, etc.), the producers of this video likely decided, in a moment of bad decision making, to try and make the best of bad situation. This was like filming The Three Stooges as house movers. Not much better for the Raleigh move - working the complex hydraulic machine for the most precious home was entrusted to a new-hire.

I would move away from there and the chemicals that come along with gold mines. Those chemicals can get into the groundwater.

What about the gardens and trees, landscaping that took decades, memories they can't get back.not to mention their land that holds shitloads of gold.its gotta be pretty hefty compensation to outweigh those losses.i would be gutted.

What happens when the gold runs out again? This was from 2008, and it states that the gold deposit would last 15 years. So even if the mining began in 2010, it will run out four years from now. When that happens, the town will again go bust, unless it has been able to attract some other industry.

Why would you move the town that short of a distance, they are still going to have the issues of the mine, they are loud, dusty, and odds are your foundations will crack way before they should. No one wants a giant hole in their back yard either.

I work in project management... Surely 80% of the problems they faces were thought of/planned before starting \o/ Power lines, railway, road officials. I highly doubt a project of this scale was figured out "on the fly" Good o'l TV Drama tho.

Greed always wins. They obviously do not like their home too much, due to allowing a OPEN PIT to be constructed next door. This should make your home more appealing, right?
