***** i think the purpose of that kiss was to emphasize how ludicrous it was for people to be shocked and repulsed by little same-sex displays of affections when opposite-sex displays of affection were always displayed in media as something "totally normal and fine" but in fact were usually almost always so much more grotesque and over-done and just plain unnecessary. the snl writers have a knack for slotting in big points of social issues in tiny moments of their sketches to hopefully inadvertently satirise the main point of the sketch entirely. for this sketch in particular, it probably wasnt the main point, but watching it in todays times, it definitely becomes a huge hint towards the issue of battling that stigma. and tbh especially back then since it was probably a lot more stigmatised in those years than it is now.
