I met Kattan and he seemed pretty stuck up. It was an independent movie premiere and he was with a girl who looked like she could be his daughter but clearly wasn’t. Not that I’m dissing that. He just kept giving me attitude and ignoring me. I worked there and was running his movie so I had a few technical questions and he didn’t give a fuck so I did what a wanted. Becoming recognizable makes people crazy.

The funny thing is that in the mid-late 90's Will Ferrell was kind of known as "Oh, that lame guy who acts stupid and is Kattan's sidekick?". Even his best (now classic) SNL characters/impressions didn't make that much of a splash: Bush, Trebek, Caray, Lipton, and Craig the cheerleader (The Spartans was universally reviled; most of us turned the channel). I remember watching those with friends or talking about them with them and no one found them funny (except Jeopardy, but that was because of the celebs they mocked and Connery...the sketch was a hit but Ferrell was just kind of "there"). Several of us were surprised when Ferrell kept coming back season after season (even though we all agreed that SNL had gone downhill since the early/mid 90's). And Ferrell had substantial, even co-starring roles in several moderately big late 90's/early 2000's films (even if many of them weren't well received), but still really didn't start to catch on until Old School, Elf, and of course Anchorman. After the mid 2000's he of course really took off, so much so that many started watching/renting his earlier less-known pre Old School movies that most people had skipped (did anyone really go see, or even rent after they came out, these movies: The Thin Pink Line (1998) , Superstar (1999), Dick (1999), The Suburbans (1999), The Ladies Man (2000), Drowning Mona (2000), Zoolander (2001), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), and Boat Trip (2002)? At least Will Ferrell being in them was not a main reason to watch them pre 2005ish). Kattan was more an of instant hit, with several characters many liked, but really only on SNL and due to A Night at the Roxbury: that was his limit and peak. He was well known, but limited to SNL and that one movie fame. His movies in the early 2000's went nowhere, and after he left SNL his career basically ended (at least in being anything well known). I think he knew this would happen (well, he had to: none of his movies besides Roxbury did well) thus why he was on SNL for 10 years. I have to admit that I didn't "get" Ferrell and thought he was lame/boring/kind of just a big doofus until after Anchorman myself. And while Kattan got on my nerves, I found him funny from the start (except for Mr. Peepers). "Such is Mango" was a catch phrase many of us would repeat. This was the consensus of most of my peers: Kattan - good, Ferrell: meh. At least this is how I remember it being a post high school/college aged kid in the late 90's/early 2000's and always really into comedy movies and SNL.

@IAmaPersion I always thought Will Ferrell was the bigger star from the start. Kattan always felt like he was at either ends of the spectrum. Playing very absurd characters like Peepers and Mango or playing the straight man to the funny person. Will on the other hand always seemed to play the funny characters and I felt he just had more range with the characters he played. Like when they made the Roxbury movie. Will's dumb character really overshadowed Kattan's character. I think what really pushed Will to the top of the SNL cast was making him George W. Bush. He really lucked out with that role. That role and his likability in general got him to where he is now.
