This is one of the best guitar Rock tracks of the 1970s - and all-time. It's Art-Pop. It's Glam Rock. It's big guitars in lipstick & sex that stomps. It's complex & new. It breaks every rule. That was the point of Bowie, Sparks, T-Rex, Roxy Music - in 1972, they were killing the '60s to create the 21st century. Take your time. Don't overthink it. Feel it. Keep digging. It'll come to you. And it's genius will take hold.

Well said, we're from the same era it appears; I first saw and heard them on the Midnight Special, and was, like, WHAT?!!? Relentlessly innovative, witty and willfully daring, challenging(norms, stereotypes, musically), and just different, many respected friends and fellow musicians have expressed their love and admiration for Sparks over the years, and I was glad to come across new material from them in the last year, here on KZbin. They've still got it. ✌😘🎶🎤🎹🎸🔥

Sparks (formerly Halfnelson) is an American pop and rock duo formed by brothers Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals) in Los Angeles. Known for their quirky approach to songwriting,[1] Sparks' music is often accompanied by sophisticated and acerbic lyrics, often about women or Shakespearean literature references,[2] and an idiosyncratic, theatrical stage presence, typified in the contrast between Russell's animated, hyperactive frontman antics and Ron's deadpan scowling. They are also noted for Russell Mael's distinctive wide-ranging voice and Ron Mael's intricate and rhythmic keyboard playing style. They have been much more successful in Europe than in their native US, though they maintain a loyal cult following in the States. Early career highlights included "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us", which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart in 1974; the disco hit "The Number One Song in Heaven" in 1979, resulting from a collaboration with Giorgio Moroder and marking a stylistic shift towards new wave/synth-pop; "When I'm With You", which topped the Australian and French Singles Charts in 1980; the single "I Predict", which provided Sparks' first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 60 in May 1982; the 1983 single "Cool Places" with the Go-Go's rhythm guitarist and co vocalist Jane Wiedlin, and "When Do I Get to Sing 'My Way'", which was the top airplay record in Germany for 1994.[3] Their frequently changing styles and visual presentations have kept the band at the forefront of modern, artful pop music.[4][5] The 2002 release of Lil' Beethoven, their "genre-defining opus",[6] as well as Hello Young Lovers (2006, their 20th studio album), Exotic Creatures of the Deep (2008), and their fantasy radio musical The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman (2009-2010) brought Sparks renewed critical and commercial success, and saw them continue to "steer clear of pop conventions".[7]

Fantastic band! They've been making records for almost 50 years ( including a recent one). Don't get hung up on a ''purpose'' or ''what genre is this''. SOOO many reactors do this instead of just GOING WITH IT. My take is: if you don't ''get'' a song, play it again. Giving up b/c you don't understand it means you never will.

Almost 50? They released their first album, self-named after their name at the time 'Halfnelson'' 1971. They had recorded an album before that, the in one that unfortunately sometimes is called 'A Woofer in a Tweeter's Clothing', which IS the name of the second released album. That first, unreleased, album was what they tried to sell in to the labels. The one and only that believed in this bunch of guys was Tod Rundgren. But he wanted some changes and better quality, so it was re-recorded and some songs exchangd. However, January 7 , 1967, Ron (keyboard, main songwriter ( was born 1945) and Russell, vocals and some songwriting (was born 1948) and two friends, a married couple, together used the name 'Urban Renewal Project', recorded six-seven songs in a "Rent-per-hour" studio. At least one survived til these days, and is finally released on a real album 2019, the great collection album (the largest set has three CDs) 'The Best of Sparks, Past Tense'. With a comment by the song title "Yes, it has crackles on it. Thank you." The track is directly from their private copy. Name of the song, written 1966 is 'Computer Girl'. -66? The first in message "e-mail" was send from one computer to another -67. Computers were enormous. And these guys pick Computer Girl, not "Robot Girl".

Edgar Wright used "Your favorite band's favorite band" as under title for his documentary 'The Sparks Brothers'. The amount of influence they have had on so many various musicians is remarkable. Everyone should see 'The Sparks Brothers', should be mandatory 😅! I brought my son (36 at that time) to watch it when it was on theaters. My son's opinion on Sparks was like here, in this reaction, probably even more negative. He didn't leave the theater a full-blooded Sparks fan, but with a totally new perspective on them, and actually really appreciates some songs, of different eras and sounds. "The Rhythm Thief', based on the music, and 'When I'm With You', based mostly on the lyrics. In it's weirdness it holds the strongest text lines ever written. So odd and so uncomfortable. " When I'm with you I never feel like garbage when I'm with you I almost feel like normal when I'm with you" If THAT isn't what it means to love, and BE LOVED for who you ARE, not for what some people THINK you are, I don't know what is. To have all that love lifting you up, boosting your self-confidence. I have a feeling that many of us who fell for Sparks unique style are that kind of persons, that either or both feel like everyone thinks you're an idiot, but also that THEY are stupid and narrow minded. In general, not only about Sparks. In any case, feeling a little misfit. And suddenly you meet somebody else, equally outside of the template. And it doesn't matter what the other people think, because this amazing and clever person says YOU are bright, YOU are the best. The older we get, the less we bother about what other people think of us, but we won't forget that feeling the first time, when we suddenly didn't care about if other people didn't get us! Freedom! And gratefulness to this person who invisibly lifted us. We learned to stand tall for who we are. The down to earth, very concrete, way to express emotions is Ron Mael's greatest asset when it comes to lyrics. Short, straight, up in your face, true and honest. AND humorous at the same time!? (You can find the same kind of honesty and awkwardness in the new 'Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is' from the latest album, 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte', out May 26th.) This became longer than I meant it to be, again 😂.

This is one of those songs I remember the first time hearing. Saturday afternoon with my girlfriend listening to one of the few radio shows that were worth listening. This song was even outstanding in a time when there were tons of exciting music. Just to put it in a context: It was released between "Tales from Topographic Oceans" by Yes and "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" by Genesis" and between "In A Glass House" and "The Power And The Glory" by Gentle Giant. Cockney Rebel released "The Psychomodo" and Roxy Music had "Counry Life". And amongst stuff like that this song was a fresh sounding earcatcher. Siouxsie and the Banshees covered it. I refused to watch the TV show "disco" though from time to time there were artists I would have listened to under different circumstances. The rest was stuff I would describe as mediocre because I don't want to hurt someone. But the main reason was the guy who presented the show. He was almost everything I always hoped I would never be.

I've loved this song since it first came out, when I was a wee kid of 7 or 8. I didn't have a clue what he was singing about in the verses though, until around 2 weeks ago! Very quirky and funny. Apparently all the verses were originally going to be followed by a well known line from different, famous movies but they just couldn't get it to work when recording it so they just stuck with 'This town....' throughout. Not sure which movie that line comes from though. With the gunshots I'd guess some cowboy movie. Does anyone know? And again, apparently it was originally going to be called Some Like it Hot. True or bollocks? Try Amateur Hour or Never Turn Your Back on Mother Nature.

One of your most interesting reactions Like the song it was all over the place LOL Sparks at theur core are a camp band with overt and subtle humor. To understand them you have to grasp that concept I know you probably didn't understand aall the lyrics but the title alone should make you chuckle Was surprised you was confused by the transitions after hearing the prog bands They were quicker because the song was not 20 mins The arrangement was very sense similar to Phil Spectors wall of sound If you listen to his production on George Harrisons Wah Wah or What Is Life you will see the similarities Even if you don't like it the song made you feel albeit uncomfortable but you had an emotional response and that is thre goal of music My reaction when I first heard it was what is this I was intrigued and curious because of the unusual vocals Then saw them on TV and was crackibg up at keyboard player Ron Maels mugging at the camera You should give it another listen You must admitt it touched a nerve Upon a few listens you will either all out dislike it or at least understand it I will concede they are an acquired taste but considering they are still releasing records and they stsarted around 1972 that is quite an accomplishment Only a handful of groups are still around from them Recentlly a documentary was made about them Here is another track from them a little less busy but still in their m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5-wZHynbpxqgLc

The theme is pretty much young people’s sexual angst, which might explain the frantic and almost disjointed presentation of the song. This maybe isn’t the best Sparks song to start with haha. FIRST the lyrics (sung words) are created to make the listener have cognicento feedback, a dissociative identity disorder as though you only get to hear the chorus because they don't want you to have it too easy; then even looking at the band members there's a painting quality where no one reacts, no one moves, very compelling and awkward - and yet there's the gaze of the Mr. Moustache Who keeps You In His Gaze. The Music Is Like Dadaism Manifesto Of What's Unreally Not Real But The Vocalist Is Convinced That He's Performing and perhaps by himself.

Regarding the crowd: this was a German music TV show (called "disco"), with a rather mixed line up of international acts and German Schlager (see 1:07). So, the Sparks were a bit too much out there for them, never mind that these 1970s TV music crowds always look rather under-energized.

Great band, but like my favourite band (Rush), not everyone will get along with them. Try Suburban Homeboy from their Lil' Beethoven album. It's ace.

They are a unique band; try their hit song from the 80s: Cool Places with Jane Wiedlin.

Ron and Russell Mael are brothers that are the main part of Sparks. I have to admit that I was never a fan of them. The only song of theirs that I liked was "Now that I own the BBC", it is much different.

Get on the Sparks caravan - their catalog goes very deep across 5 decades. And what makes them totally unique is they produced music across every one of those decades that's not only musically viable but totally innovative and original. I defy anyone to name ANY other artist who's accomplished that over 5 decades! I confess I was drawn to Sparks in the early seventies precisely because they were so weird and different. And I've been following them ever since. 2021 has been a particularly productive year for them - a new documentary covering their entire career came out early this summer and this fall the movie Annette has all music by them and the story was co-written by them also. This accomplishment 50 years into their career - astonishing!

Chod - this video by Edgar Wright (the director of The Sparks Brothers documentary) of his favorite Sparks songs might be helpful to you. Or maybe not - Sparks isn't for everyone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKWqc5asd9aCgNU

Chod - I highly, highly recommend you see the documentary The Sparks Brothers to get a full understanding of them and their entire musical journey. I have been a fan since the early seventies but even I was astounded at the shear variety of music artists, actors and comedians that are also Sparks fanatics like me. I promise you the movie not only enlighten you about them but you will be hugely entertained. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5CzeKlqeayArMk

I don’t remember this group. It looks like the beginnings of glam rock, and I wasn’t into too much glam, what with other top tear groups at the time like Led Zeppelin, Yes, Santana, etc. Glam was an acquired taste, more so for the younger teens, little brothers, etc.
