Congrats on the purchase of the west side of McDavitt! Always good to see more of the bog preserved. I enjoy watching your videos to brush up on my warbler ID. Keep up the good work.

I agree with you that the state bird should be the golden-winged warbler. I will also be a great gray owl for Halloween.

A nice collection, Sparky. I was surprised to hear you say that Connecticut Warblers aren’t generally very responsive to playback, as that has not been my experience. Regardless, they are always a high-value target, so congratulations on finding one.
@SparkyStensaas4 ай бұрын
Thanks Al! If you are very close to the core of their territory playback works well. But if they are seeing well off the road, they don’t seem to respond very well.

Even though the little bobwhite is a non-native it stilled pulled on my heart strings, it looked so lonely.

Yes… I don’t think he’ll be finding a mate anytime soon. They are beautiful birds actually. I guess I should be clear that they are not native to northern Minnesota but native to the US of course

Loving all your videos. Thanks so much! I’m not a deet person, though. Be careful with that stuff. Thanks also for the litter removal/adopt a highway! Dirty diapers, how rude can people be?!

Thanks cobbmtngirl! I’ve come along way since I used to use 100% DEET when I was a canoe guide on the Canadian border so strong that it would melt the rubber on your binoculars! I’ve backed off to 25% :-) Yes, at least we don’t see as many beer cans as we used to. More energy drink and vaping containers now!

Great! Just a reflection: How come your warbler males are so colorful compared to especially our European leaf warblers, numbering 15+ species. They are typically wood warblers like yours, but are all mostly greyish or greenish. So, they only rely on the song in their territorial behavior whereas your combine color and song. I assume. I have had many groups out for warbler excursions over the years here in Norway. And the only way to teach people the differences between the species is learning the song. But you lucky guys also have these nice colors to show your audience!

Good question Per! that is so true! I was just looking through my European field guide in fact.

While very similar in size habits and habitats, old world warbler and new world wood warbler aren't closely related. Also, the wood warbler songs are not much of a warble

I plan on coming in the winter. What is the best Month?
@SparkyStensaas4 ай бұрын
Hi Susan, anytime between mid December and mid March should be great. We get a different mix of birds every winter, but there are always fun things to see. And that is when all the feeders are up in the northern owls may be visible as well. Lots of winter finches and other boreal birds.

I live near the St. Croix river and have seen all warblers i could hope to see except the Connecticut warbler. Have heard it twice in migration but never seen. Frustrating.
