When I first came across Icy Mike about 2 years ago. I saw him on Streetbeefs (shout out to ref Lord Bestaban) in the background. I thought he was exploring what self defence was about and that he had some good tactics for that situation. Over the months and watching Sensei Seth, Jesse Enkamp, Rob from McDojo and the JKD guy(sorry I forgot his name at the moment but has some great insights). You guys meeting up and sharing knowledge and letting us see the results is great. I appreciate this entire community. You guys are awesome.

What I learned from this video is that striking is a lot more diverse a thing than perhaps you even realize. You described things in terms of memorizing a pool of combos, which makes sense in grappling (your wheelhouse) because there’s only so many ways two humans can wrap around each other. The distance is zero, the force required is predictable. Meanwhile when all the distances between zero contact and full contact are included striking is a lot more fluid and variable. It obviously will still help to have that muscle memory of combos like you described, but a lot more things can be applied when you’re looking at all the real estate of striking target.

Your striking isn’t bad. Your footwork is horrendous. A lot of times you stand still when attacking, defending, or throwing combos. That’s going to get you hit. Often. One year of daily footwork training will do you good. It will also improve your grappling believe it or not.
@rykehuss3435 Жыл бұрын
As a boxer I dont understand this slow-motion, under water sparring style at all. Youre just goofing around, this is not sparring. This is playing. Its not going to help you one bit in learning how to fight. In my club the lightest sparring is twice as fast as this, and 3 times harder. And thats actually light, like 20-30%. Youre going at like 3%. No idea what the goal is, you wont learn anything with this shit. If anything this will just introduce bad habits when you think you can walk through 1-2's like nothing The very basics of sparring begins with being able to keep your partner honest with your strikes. If they dont feel like they need to respect your hits, the whole sparring falls apart and turns into this playground dance we see here. When me as a 205 lb dude spar with a 150 lb dude, they can throw close to 100% to keep me honest, and I'm throwing at 30% and thats light sparring for me. Its all relative. No pain no gain truly reigns

@@institches2750 that's not true I've been training for close to 40 years and the most vicious knockouts I've were when people were not training without headgear, that's like saying your better off on a construction sight without a hard hat
@ArmchairViolence2 жыл бұрын
@@GhostCat-zc2gj Instiches is correct. When you personally see the worst knockouts is anecdotal. Headgear increases the volume of your head, which makes it a bigger target and creates a greater lever action when being punched. This means that there's a greater rotational momentum imparted on your brain, which makes knockouts worse. Headgear protects you from cuts and bruises, not brain trauma.
@institches27502 жыл бұрын
@@GhostCat-zc2gj I didn't make that up. I read a study on it somewhere. I was under the impression it was fairly common knowledge in combat sport circles...? And the hard hat comparison may not work here. Hard hats prevent hard objects like falling tools from splitting your skull open. Headgear is meant to protect your brain from sloshing around. Football helmets are probably a better analogy, and head trauma is a HUGE problem in that industry.

Oh my , whilst most of your insights are thought provoking , the way you are bundling, the failing techniques or ridiculous claims of systems, as belonging to everyone that does them, is arrogant and insulting. i thought you came from a position of extensive experience and skill . Nope, i see nothing in this video, except someone, who can not fight. I can comment, on a chef cooking some crap “interpretation of good food” for show but that one piece of nonsense, does not make the whole profession crap or give me the right to say everything that he has learned, in his career, is useless. The statement that “if you cant fight in a combat sport, you can not fight in the streets” is total rubbish …….i have seen so many street fighters, who could knock the crap out of many Martial Artists etc .You would be welcome to try your luck, using Martial Arts, in the clubs of South London. The cross over of what works, can be found in lots of Martial Arts and true Martial Artists, try out and use what works, from any style, in their practice and own up, to what doesn’t! A good coach will add to your aims . You make my point re:experience, when you say “ theres no use cherry picking moves without enough knowledge or foundational skill to be able judge, what’s valuable or will work” yet you are making judgments based on your limited experience, and judging, all those who practice a particular Martial Art, as being incompetent at fighting and also by the very limited skill set, that you possess!
@ArmchairViolence3 жыл бұрын
You are confusing "knowledge" with "the ability to fight." They are very different things, and you need to understand that. The best coaches are rarely world class fighters. The best fights are rarely world class coaches. The best analysts are often neither great coached nor great fighters. I have never claimed to be an exceptional fighter. I AM a good analyst. I know many people that can beat me up that will fully admit that I am a better analyst than them. Your inability to recognize the differing skillsets speaks to your limited knowledge of martial arts. It's a concept that even most beginners understand.
@thomassegrue87833 жыл бұрын
@@ArmchairViolence Being good technically was not my main point From the visual examples that you present and from your “analysis”, that blankets whole systems as useless, because of either deluded individuals within them or certain failing techniques, you do not possess, any degree of a “skill set” or enough knowledge, to not recognize, that you are reveling anything, that others do not already know, and that they just choose to smile at and move on . It must be an inflated ego and the manic desire to be heard/noticed, that has created a willingness to overstate the obvious and to expose your limited experience. @@thomassegrue8783 If they already knew the things I was talking about, they would address those obvious problems in their system. But they don't, because they have no idea. When I criticize arts, I criticize the things that art puts out as instructionals and examples of good moves. I don't pick a random low-level practitioner to criticize, because that's not a good judge of the art.
