Never forget Aristodemus, one of the 300, who was sent home after contracting an eye infection. Eurytus was also sent home from battle, but returned almost Blind to fight along side his Spartan Brothers. After Pantities, a fellow soldier sent on an envoy, had commited suicide in shame, Aristodemus had the dishonour of being called a coward. Desperate to regain Honour, during the Battle of Plataea, Aristodemus was seen entering a Berserker Rage and fought with such might, that the black mark against his name was removed. In the words of Herodotus "He fought more bravely than any Spartan before falling in battle"
@joek6004 жыл бұрын
TheBigAyland Greeks used to award the bravest warriors, in a very similar concept with today's medals. The spartans acknowledged the valor of Aristodemos, but refused to award him, because unlike the other dead heroes, he was considered to be fighting for himself not for their mutual cause. He was seeking death while the others had much to live for yet they gave their lives. When somebody was accused for cowardice, the whole society shunned him. They would not speak to him, they would not even give him fire, he would be excluded from the social life, he would be constantly insulted by his peers and mocked by children. No one would agree to give him his daughter and hus wife would have the right to divorce him. The social pressure was immense. Thats why Pantitis hunged himself. Aristodemos was accused that he used his infection as a way to escape his duty, while Eurytos who was practically blinded by an infection in both eyes, had his helot lead him into battle. Aristodemos was called a tressas, trembler, one that his feet tremble in fear. In Platea he broke ranks, something that it was forbidden, and fell upon the persians killing many of them until he was swarmed by their numbers.

Apart from the well known Lamda symbol on their shields, Spartiates very often bore the symbol of the Sun or that of one of the labours of Hercules. Spartans thought of themselves as pure and direct decendants of the well known demigod and the sun symbolises him and his feats in his labours are a depiction of the "victories of the sun in the battles of nature" (e.g his arrows shooting down the Stymphailian Birds as the rays of the sun penetrate the black rainy clouds to give a bright day, or defeating the Erymanthian Boar as the sun overcomes the might of the strong wind etc). Also, the Spartan army was divided in - what we would today call - divisions, with one of them bearing the icon of a hawk (the ancient Greek word "Lako" - hence Lakedaimon - means "hawk") and another one that of a scorpion (symbol of Ares, god of war). They chose the red colour for their clothing both for intimidation and to hide their bleeding injuries from the enemies sight. Lastly, the name Efialtis is the Greek word for "nightmare", keeping the reminder of the betrayal over the ages.

I loved seeing Sabaton on October 15th in Seattle. I just wish they played this song, it has sentimental value to me. In high school, I slacked off so much I got sent to military school. (Washington Youth Academy) In military school, we had 3 platoons: 1st Platoon (Wolfpack), 2nd Platoon (Spartans), and 3rd Platoon (Eagles). I was in 2nd Platoon, I was a Spartan. All of our espirit de corps showed it. I had been a metalhead for quite some time. During PT, some of our drill sergeants occasionally played metal music. Mostly 5FDP and System Of A Down and stuff, but it was enough to make me feel better. At one point I had the chance to talk to a drill sergeant as a normal person, and I recommended this song to be played for our platoon. He liked it, and actually said it became of his favorites. Whenever the song was played in PT, my platoon became unstoppable and it basically got me through tough times. So a year later when I got to see Sabaton in concert, I was excited to hear this song, but it wasn't played, probably because they had a limited amount of time. I think Sabaton should be allowed to have longer shows. As a fan, I wouldn't mind standing for a longer period of time, especially with this band's music. Totally killer show either way

@@christiandauz3742 Where can i watch it? Honestly on youtube all i found was a short video that talked about members on the Greek side only. You said that the persians outnumbered the Greeks 3 to 1 only (which still is a lot) but that's implying that the persians were around 21k. I think the biggest empire at the time could afford to spend more soldiers than that on a conquest, especially considering that you could bring the armies of 2 city states and have more soldiers than that making it unnecessary to fight in thermopylae to begin with. It was gonna end like the battle of plataea and this whole thing would be un needed. In addition if you claim that 21k persians were there that means that by the end of it only 1k persians were left making it extremely hard to burn Athens who's military was leagues above the Persians too. Also the ancient times and ww2 are kind of really far apart from each other so we can't compare them lol. Even in more recent history there are cases of small detachments fighting off for a long time forced that vastly outnumbered them

@@giorgosx5838 If I remember right, Adam Conover states that the Persians outnumbered the Greeks 7 to 1 at Thermopylae By the time of Xerxes the Persian Empire does have stability problems plus there were logistical problems moving that many soldiers Before Thermopylae, the Persians had to build a new bridge so they can move further into Greece The Immortals did wear heavy armor just like the Hoplites, though not to the same degree The Greeks embellished the battle's story in their legends like in Frank Miller's 300

I've often wondered why Leonidas stands alone as the greatest hero of the Persian wars despite dying in the first battle. It's probably because living heroes are still politicians with agendas and enemies. Pausanias, the Spartan commander who won at Plataea, was killed by fellow Spartans after he became unpopular, while Themistocles, the hero of Salamis, was driven to exile from Athens and ended up switching sides and advising the Persian navy. Dead heroes are more convenient than living ones, I guess.

There was a similar battle that occurred on December 2nd, 1899. 60 Filipino troops under Gregorio Del Pilar held off some 400 or 500 Americans under Peyton March at the Battle of Tirad Pass, with one tribesman leading the Americans on a path that eventually outflanked and overwhelmed our guys

The story just shows the strength of the Spartans they went from 83.3 to 1 which means each Spartan had to fight like 84 men to 208.3 to 1 when call for the other troops to withdraw upon being flanked which required them to fight with the equivalents of 209 soldiers. So in conclusion even if they weren’t overwhelmed they would eventually have fallen due to inability to maintain stamina. Ps love your music sabaton

On a sidenote I read in school that they were promised reinforcements a few thousand strong but they never arrived if they would’ve gotten those reinforcements they could’ve taken the entire Persian empire that day

+Belagerungsmörser the Sheep Go watch "300". When the Spartans join up with the Arcadians, Leonidas asks some of them what their professions are. "Tailor" "Cobbler" etc. Then he asks the Spartans what their profession is. They respond by raising their spears and shouting "AHROO" as one. In today's U.S. Army, we have "HOOAH" while the U.S.M.C. has "OORAH". It's a shout to instill morale in yourself and your comrades-in-arms.
