We're back with a fantastic, new video today about the song Light in the Black! It is something else, as we're not talking about one specific event or battle. In fact, this army's reason d'etre is to avoid any battles, or at least protect the harmless from their effects. In any case - it makes for an interesting episode, which, and we cannot stress this enough, we wouldn't have been able to make without our Patrons. Even supporting us with a dollar a month helps us tremendously (and grants you access to early access to our episodes). Please consider supporting us on www.patreon.com/sabatonhistory! Gotta say, I'm highly disappointed in the history section if this video. Some glaring inaccuracies. The UN did not have a dedicated peacekeeping force until 1956, when they formed the UNEF (Emergency Force) during/shortly after the Suez crisis. Every mission b4 that was just a hodgepodge collection of guys from different countries sent out to observe and broker peace deals that never worked. Also very disappointed that you did not once mention Canada in a tale about UN Peacekeepers. The entire idea was put b4 the general assembly by Canada's Secretary of state for external affairs at the time (Lester B Pearson, who would later go on to become Canada's Prime Minister), and Canadians have made up a significant portion of every mission to date, (usually around 10% of the forces on any given mission, despite our smaller population and minuscule standing army). It is also quite common for Canadian Generals to be put in command of peacekeeping missions, despite other countries contributing more men and material due to their larger resources. Overall, I'm not convinced you did a thorough enough job researching this topic b4 making the video, and I sincerely hope you will learn from this in future, and use those lessons to help improve the quality of videos going forward. That being said, I do love the work you've done, and absolutely love Sabaton's music. Keep it up. PS. Here's a link to some info on Canada's involvement with the UNEF: www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/peacekeeping

So if all of those time travelers where to go back and kill hitler as a baby one of the domino affects would be that the UN is never formed. That would mean without intervention; one of the larger conflicts the UN would have brokered peace for (or prevented all together). May have spiralled out of control. Ultimately resulting in a different War to End All Wars, Germany creating atomic bombs, and a United Nations anyway.
@IronWarhorsesFun4 жыл бұрын
the UN was clearly set up to fail. the absurd rules governing them give so little leeway that they are unable to do anything useful. it must then be pure coincidence that UN Peacekeeping got hijacked by Imperialist forces almost from the start.

@Nooboleon Nooboleon Russia's invasion of Hungary during the 50s prisoners on both sides were executedin cold blood. Post War occupations of the Baltic States USSR deported hundreds of thousands to slave labor camps which didn'tend until Stalin's death. Post War occupation of Poland was so bad in the early years some claimed it was even worse than the German one which itself was already one of the most brutal occupation in modern history. The massive ethnic cleansing of Eastern Europe which between 8 to 14 million ethnic Germans were deported to East Germany, labor camps or flat out murdered lasted until the 50s as well. If you include stuff outside of Europe it gets considerably worse as well. But you can argue most of these are remaining ripples from WWII but honestly an eye for an eye argument never holds water.

I would say that the darkest moment of the united nations would be Rwanda in 1994 when General Romeo Delaire desperately wanted to use his forces to stop the bloodletting during the worst part of the genocide and was not told to stand down but was also ordered to do nothing to prevent the continuing violence.

You are right. Not only had he to watch the slaughter from his compound, but he told the UN about this happening several weeks iun advance. He had someone inside of the government of Habyarimana feeding him more and more damning information. About the plans of ethnic cleansing, about the Interahamwe training to kill civilians, about the order of several million machetes from China, about Hate Radio. And he sent it all to the UN...and they did nothing. If you come to Kigali today, be sure to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial. You will find the whole story, the original cables he sent. And what happend after he was ordered to leave. About 1mio people died in 100 days of murder. Sabaton should write a song about that conflict. About the 50000 people lured to Murambi and killed within 3 days. About the 250000 that died in and around Kigali and are now buried beneath the memorial. Even when the RFP took back the country bit by bit and drove the genocidaires to the west, while the French pressed in from that side. But then they opened a corridor and let the murderer flee to the DRC. They said, it was for the refugees. Who knows. But France to this day does not extradite known genocidaires to Rwanda. Think about that what you like. The most impressive part of the story is how Rwanda came back from that. There was a country torn, destroyed, all trust was gone, the population reduced and scattered, the dead, the victims or rape and violence, the murderer in custody, all levels of administration gone, no judges, no doctors, no teachers.....but just 25 years later Rwanda is a positive country, with a growing economy that conquered the hate and the suffering and is ranked as one of the top 5 developed countries in Africa. You could not have predicted this in 1994. I'm not from Rwanda, but have been there quite often and worked with the CNLG to keep the memory alive. Every annual commemoration (Kwibuka) has the motto: Remember. Unite. Renew. And that is what happend and keeps happening. I am astonished every time I visit, how the country has changed for the better. If you have the chance, visit Rwanda. You will not be disappointed. And Sabaton: Write a song about that conflict (which has been brewing for decades and was, of course, started by European colonialism).

Oh and that Swedish doctors doesn't care about damages made to your body if you are a metal dude. Still, they encourage you, but don't listen to them if they say ´´Sure your arm is broken, but you can still use your fingers´´ Oh and great video on such an underrated song

The single greatest failing of the UN Peacekeepers is the requirement that they be invited in, and the restrictions on their ability to use force. If they’re going to stand between civilians and those who would do them harm, they damn well need to be able to do what’s needed to do so. What happened in the Balkans was inexcusable, and must not be allowed to happen again.

This song gives a new appreciation to these men. I don’t see too much “lol UN peacekeepers useless” but I do still, despite taking part in actual combat especially around mali, and seeing people praising them for helping in their places form medical help to fending off insurgents. It can’t be easy when it comes to being careful how they intervene in conflicts, and being mostly about giving aid. And the fact they do get casualties in combat. I wish these men well

The UN may in fact be useless in a lot of situations when the major powers end up vetoing eachother... however... I never served as a blue helmet when I was in the service but I was on a small excercise with the partnership for pieace nations. Do not underestimate how important it is for members of the military to work witheachother and have that experience. I am almost 100% sure that every soldier in the world knows exactly what it means to put that barret or helmet on. it's a symbol of peace and responsibility to protect people and it forces you to work with other nations that you otherwise might have issues with. it brings people together, it brings soldiers together. Soldiers that might one day be called upon to fight eachother and who just might say 'no' in extreme cases because they have worked with the other side towards pieace and instead might get rid of a bad government. Or maybe it would just be telling their friends about how the other side thinks and that they were working just as hard toward the peace as everybody else was. Even a symbol that is sometimes helpless still means something and can change a few peoples' minds. I would have been very honored to serve with the blue helmet on, even if sometimes you cannot prevent certain things. I think every soldier who ever served with the blue helmet on, has a unique perspective on conflict and peace and sometimes those guys are all you need to prevent something bad from happening, sometimes it's those guys that change some minds that matter. Just my 2 cents.

@bobw16785 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the sentiment but your thesis rests on a false presumption. Military partnerships like that are almost always the product of local security agreements, not the UN. We train with european soldiers bc of NATO, for example. We train with Nigerians, Saudis, Colombians, etc because we have mutual strategic interests in their regions and those nations ASK us to help. The UN actually has literally no say on military cooperations between individual nations. The UN doesnt have a military, there are no "UN training missions," something happens, the UN asks nations for troops, nations choose to participate and if they do, great, if not, no repercussion. Then when the UN goes in there and supposedly "stops the fighting," all they really do is push the fighting elsewhere - they dont STOP the fighting. They stand on street A, and all the militias just moved their fight to street B and the UN watches and says "not our jurisdiction, we cant do anything." See Somalia, where the UN really just stood aside in their "green zone" and let the militias pretty much do whatever in the rest of the city. That's not peacekeeping, that's feckless military adventurism that doesnt even TRY to solve the problem, and in many cases actually makes it WORSE.

I think I knew this before but I always realized that being the UN or a peacekeeper, especially if your main goal is not to take sides unless forced too, would be hard. I see people complain of course but then again it’s usually the same people who complain about sovereignty. I finally looked up successes that wasn’t just military so I knew that, it had more good for it than useless, like the UN itself. basically nothing is ever simple, it does need changes but we also still need it

This song is easily one of my all time favorites by Sabaton. Didn't see the relation between Pär's story and the song, tho....must have been a pretty shitty feeling to know that a "friend" tried to beat you to death...glad you got out of it relatively unscathed, mate!

Since this is a video on UN forces, may I suggest doing a song, or researching, about the Irish Army UNOC "A" Company during the Siege of Jadotville in September 1961? "A" Company was 155 soldiers sent to the Congo during the "Congo Crisis" and survived a five day siege where they faced a force of ~3000 mercenaries. Zero Irish lives were lost during those five days and Commandant Patrick Quinlan only surrendered after the last bullet was fired.

fr tho. Whats the point of having a military force that is supposed to keep the peace and protect the innocent if it isn't allowed to keep the peace or protect the innocent.

Which would cause 90% of the member states to leave and move everyone back to square one. Whose policy should it enforce? Some random member state's? The Security Council's? The UN in its current form and the work it is able to do are nothing short of miracles, even when you take its shortcomings into consideration.
@Lewd-Tenant_Isan4 жыл бұрын
What the UN _should_ do is strictly enforce more aggressive human rights protection policies. The UN should focus on benefiting the civilians and the innocents rather than take sides or just stand by and watch. The UN should also be more responsible for their forces, if they are in grave danger, they _must_ be supported at all costs. The Seige of Jadotville should not have happened if the UN bothered to help their own soldiers...
@KristianVirtanen5 жыл бұрын
High respect. I know these guys who are peacekeepers somewhere in the world, definately way too underrated soldiers. They dont make new kill records nor receive medals of honors. But if they leave, there is lots of peoples who will quickly miss them and the shit starts to hit the fan

Oh! Oh my! I didn’t expect a reply- I generally as a rule of thumb tend to like most every Sabaton History video, especially since it combines the best of both worlds. As for the video, I’m curious if perhaps the Serb-Muslim conflict is something worth covering a some point especially with the UN. As strange as it sounds I’d like to hear you talk about the more personal perspective of the commander whose hands were politically bound, only able to what I have heard to be stand unarmed in the face of the militants, but aside from that it was a fascinating video as always! Also, I’d like to put fourth a petition to make the Spanish word, “Sabado” which means “Saturday” to “Sabaton.” Edit: I believe I was actually thinking of the Rwandan Genocide, apologies. Or maybe I am not?
@SabatonHistory5 жыл бұрын
Well, we certainly appreciate the support! If Sabaton ever made a song on the Yugoslav Wars it would indeed be very interesting to cover and discuss it. As for the petition: That's the most awesome idea we've heard in a long time!

I don't know how this song is so underrated. It's one fo my favorites! I don't think the UN is useless like many seem to - their job is to do their best to stop a war not join it. And their duty is to the common people. but OMG it's so damn slow! Especially compared to how fast-paced the world is now. I get that it's a lot of countries and. a lot of bureaucracy and the main goal s to keep the peace, which means you can't just go in, guns blazing and help the "good" side, but damn, untill they actually act shit, most of the time, has already hit the fan and dried up... But overall I think the world is better with the work they do than it would be without it. Btw, It's time for Pär to make a storytime channel

My dad was sent to Croatia and some other eastern european country in the early 90's. He was in the Danish army as a tank gunner in a centurion (He cant remember which type or model). He got some ours of vhs tapes from then. And a heavy and thick photoalbum from their daily life. They didnt do very much. Never any combat. But the team after his got some action. A high ranking soldier got shot by the croatians. My dad still got his blue barret plus a shell from a centurion tank

The ROE of the UN caused a large amount of problems for Australia during Rwanda. Thankfully since then Australia how followed its own ROE for any UN operation that it has been part of since then. One story I was told once was how some members of the UN wanted help with a large amount of bodies but wanted the Australians to go in unarmed. They refused and after an apparently heated discussion the Aussies helped but with their weapons.
