Director Stanley Kubrick tells the tale of Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), the bold gladiator slave and Varinia (Jean Simmons), the woman who believed in his cause. Challenged by the power-hungry General Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Spartacus is forced to face his convictions and the power of Imperial Rome at its glorious height. The inspirational true account of man's eternal struggle for freedom, Spartacus combines history with spectacle to create a moving drama of love and commitment.

Spartacus occupied a rarefied position as the peak of epic filmmaking before CGI, along with Dr. Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia and a few others. Thousands of actors, all location shooting. Not until Gladiator would a film surpass it in spectacle.

The world feels a little more empty without a man who has bought a great intensity, vitality, and resolve to the world. I saw Spartacus in 1970. I was crying so hard towards the end of the movie and people were not even looking at me, they were all absorbed in the movie. I kept crying all the way back home and couldn’t sleep, the movie haunted me: the oppression, the unfulfilled dream, the profound romance and all the rest of it. It’s an epic story and not so easy to watch. This kind of movies and actors are history...

What was cool about Spartacus the heroic slave was certainly cool about Kirk Douglas. He never gave up, he flipped off authority for honest reasons, and his commitment to making the best movies possible is without equal. The most fitting epitaph I can think of, I just thought of five minutes ago. See if this will impress: Kirk plays by his own rules: KIRK OWNS IT, THUS KIRK RULES!!! KIRK DOUGLAS IS FOREVER! And now MICHAEL carries on his legacy. God bless Michael and the remains of the Douglas Dynasty. RIP to the ORIGINAL "CAPTAIN KIRK!" PEACE OUT, SPARTACUS!!

And since than, Spartacus was no longer just but a simple man who fought a losing war against an empire, but an immortal legend that would rise up from the ashes of the mortal man's defeat, endure history and eventually transform into a revolutionary, unstoppable force of nature that even to this day would make all oppressors tremble with fear and bring the oppressed with hope that one day, they'll earn their freedom.

I often wonder what "Spartacus" was thinking about as he watched his wife and his son ride away to freedom while he knew that he would have to endure the horrendous pain suffering and death of crucifixion? I'm sure that a part of him was shocked/surprised and relieved to see that they were both alive, but the other part was bittersweet. His heart was already broken due to being forced to murder his best friend, and now, he must bid an unspoken goodbye to his wife and child. Thank you Kirk Douglas for sharing your talent with the world. Thank you for jumping into your roles with both legs and exuding that familiar Douglas passion that we all came to know and to love. R.I.P you grand giant of a man.

The last of the truly great generation of actors is just about gone. Yes there are plenty of "good" actors, but only a very few were GREAT. He was one of the best. Heroes, villains, common men or legends, intensely serious or lighthearted humor, this one could do them all, and be great at them all, while giving each of his roles his own special touch. Hardly his most famous role, but a great one for watching his versatility, was (ready for this?) "Disneys 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", as Ned Land. Watch it again.

The scene early in the movie when Tony Curtis as the singing poet hands Spartacus an egg (previous ones were cracked open to launch a fluttering bird), Spartacus cracks open the egg and the mush of egg yolk and egg white covers his hand. For a second, all the oppression of Spartacus’s former life as a slave thunders into view, as if once more he is being mocked. Kirk Douglas perceives that in his character so well, and he looks as if he will explode. Just for a second. But what a second! Because the explosion of laughter from all the freed slaves around him suddenly makes him laugh: but you know it was not a show on his part. He’s learning to regain and to feel anew the wonder of life and freedom, if he ever could remember such a time. He’s fragile and he knows it, under his tough exterior. It’s Kirk’s so subtle acting skills and his subtle understanding that contributes to such a great movie. The look in his face that brief second spoke volumes.

@Degree7 Lol you are dumb as fuck. FullMetal Jacket is way better, not to mention 2001, Clockwork Orange, Dr Strangelove and The Shining which are all way better films. Listen to how dated the soundtrack is in Spartacus for example. It sounds like the composer had a stroke. You are one of those old chaps i recon, that saw this movie in the 60's maybe, so you are blinded by nostalgia. That's fine i guess.

Spartacus is a metaphor of willing and courage... The Slave Revolution was never going to evicerate Rome... But that one peice of dialogue... To see them rise from their knees from the dust... That is the whole point... They were free to die in battle not chained .... Even on crosses ... they were free..

In 1958 Kirk Douglas wanted the role of Judah Ben-Hur in the MGM production of Ben-Hur but the producers wanted Charlton Heston. They then offered the role of the bad guy Messala (eventually taken by Steven Boyd) to Kirk who was so fuming mad that he got a hold of Anthony Mann and started to produce Spartacus. We should be glad that he did.

Douglas would have bee great as Messala - as was Steven Boyd, especially in the scene were Messala is broken and dying after the race !
