Even though there is not as much output by them I have listened to as i would like, I can still conclude that Coil is a once-in-a-lifetime band. So genius.

Just when you thought this lullaby couldn't get creepier, Rise Up Singing notes that John and Alan Lomax collected this folksong and says about this song, "The 'lambie' which this slave sings about (as she rocks her master's child to sleep) is her own child - who has no one to sing her to sleep." Also, the original lyric is "The birds and butterflies *pecking out* his eyes."

Lyrics: Hush-a-bye, don't you cry Go to sleepy, little baby Go to sleepy, little baby When you wake, you shall have All the pretty little horses All the pretty little horses Blacks and bays, and dapples and greys All the pretty little horses Way down yonder in the meadow Lies a poor little lamby Bees and b***erflies flit around his eyes Poor little thing is crying "mammy" (Poor little thing is crying "mammy") (Poor little thing is crying "mammy") Go to sleep, don't you cry Rest your head upon the clover Rest your head upon the clover In your dreams, you shall ride While your mummy watches over Blacks and bays, and dapples and greys All the pretty little horses All the pretty little horses Go to sleep, don't you cry Rest your head upon the clover Rest your head upon the clover In your dreams, you shall ride While your mummy watches over In your dreams, you shall ride While your mummy watches over Blacks and bays, and dapples and greys All the pretty little horses All the pretty little horses All the pretty little horses

I believe he meant that this track in general is far older. The song itself is a very old song. Many people have played it over the years. This was an old prairie lullaby, it may be far older than that.
@blackwingvalleylover3 жыл бұрын
Might be a slave song from the South think. The original lyrics has a little child lost and the flies "plucking out its eyes" quite alot more sad and violent. Quite glad Nick or current 93 guys re wrote it actually!

Gogy Gogyn It's a civil war song. If you can not close your eyes about cruel and crazy things around you, an utopic “lullaby“ like this will replace all unchangeable facts. The question “Why we have war?“ is no real question anymore that you have to answer. Because the “little horses“ that will come to you if you just sleep are much more important than all things that one human can not explain or change. The horses are just there, we don't have to explain any real facts about the horses; they are just there even in times of war, fear and anger.

it's a traditional american lullaby. it was eventually covered by current93 and that is probably the inspiration since they were close friends and collaborated.
