any tips for doing the rope climb with shoes that keep slipping due to all the mud?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
We are working on a rope climb how to video as a matter of fact. One cheap hack is to wipe off the crud on the bottoms and inside edge of the soles of your shoes before you go up the rope. I did that in the race shown in this very video. The mud in Jacksonville was off the charts, super thick and super sticky. I used my index finger and scrapped all that mess off my shoes before going up the rope. Not super sophisticated, but it helped!

Great video as always! My girlfriend just signed up for 2 Spartan Supers (her first in 4 years) and we are watching this to look at obstacles and technique, so appreciate the high quality! Also, I know last year I recommended this late in the ballgame, but I am doing the Indian Mud Run in Ohio the 3rd weekend of June. It's a cheap, non profit race run by great people! It's by far the best race I've ever done with great, original (and super tough) obstacles. I would love to see you guys there - you should check it out! Wishing you all the best this season!

Love the race videos and all of your content! What do you guys do to train when you don't have obstacles to practice on?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As far as obstacles, we built many of them and practice that way. If that is not an option and you don't have access to obstacles, our recommendation is to add pullups to your workout routine. Pullups help with grip strength and build the muscles used in a great many obstacles like monkey bars, twister, beater, wall climbs, etc. For rope climb practice, throw a towel over the pullup bar on either side or both. The grip there mimics the handhold on the climbing rope, and will augment the same muscle groups used in your upper body to climb. Hope this helps - AROO!

there can not be an elevation gain of 1611 feet , LOL the highest point in Florida is 345 feet , near Pensacola , 200 miles away , the highest point in this race was about 30 feet
@OCRKings11 ай бұрын
YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. During editing we took the elevation from Garmin Connect without enabling elevation correction first. Per Garmin: "Elevation Corrections are calculated with data from professional surveys instead of the data from your device. If your device has a barometric altimeter, Elevation Corrections are disabled by default." We used the data right from the device and got that crazy number that made it into the video. The corrected amount: 3FT - I am not kidding.

I've never done one of these before, what happens if someone is unable to complete one of the obstacles? Do they forfeit or get to continue the race?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
Good question! OK, typically in Spartan Race, if you are unable to complete an obstacle you must do a penalty, usually 30 burpees. Recently, Spartan has swapped out the burpees for a penalty loop, meaning a missed obstacle like the rope climb may result in an additional (short) distance that must be run, adding time and distance to your results.

@HappyPerson-dd2tu10 ай бұрын
What happens if you fail to complete a challenge?
@OCRKings10 ай бұрын
For a little while there were penalty loops, extra mileage to run if you missed and obstacle. Now though, I believe they are back to 30 burpees for each failed obstacle.

Hey guys! Great video as always. Seeing that mud reminded me of how 8-9 miles of the Ohio Beast was last year. I’m thinking it might be why they changed locations this year. That mud was rough. I noticed Mack struggling on the box getting his feet on the knot. I know a lot of people struggle on the box especially if there is no knot. Have you guys tried locking your feet in like on the rope climb? It worked for me the last time I tried that. Also I heard you mention a lot of first time people in another post. Do you think that has to do with the price drop for signing up? Did you notice picture taking at new obstacles or more of the same ones? Last question. Are you guys going to New Jersey in April? It will be my first time trying that course. As always thanks for the post.
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Before they added the knots, I did use the J hook for the box, but once they added the knots, I abandoned that strategy. I do spend a bit more time to look at the knots on the ropes - looking for a knot that doesn't look like the top of a mushroom. Those get slick and hard to pinch. A knot that has a good edge to it. I think that was Mack's issue at this super. Talking with a few elites post race, they seem to toe the knot just long enough to jump up and mount the box - sounds faster than I can now move. We definitely spoke with a lot of first timers but I am not sure if cost was a factor (lower price can't hurt though, right?). Quite a few seemed to be dragged along by someone who's completed some races already. The peeps we met post race... they ALL said they loved it and will be doing more races. That's a great thing! Picture taking is still.... meh. Pictures come out great but it's still the same ole obstacles - the exception was the rig. They did have a camera man there for sunday's sprint. Just once would love to see rope climb bell rings, olympus, or even hoist. At the moment I (Damer) am signed up for the beast in April. Trying to get Mack to join me. We've done that event many times now, so there is a bit of burnout. NJ is a challenging mountain - awesome when the weather is right and other times, miserable. Hope to see you there though (with Mack)!
@dhaskins042 жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back. You guys have been great and always respond to posts. I think you guys really bridge the gap between the elites and beginners. Your videos help and inspire those first timers and even those who have ran a few and are looking for tips. One of the best things about spartan is the community and knowing you’re never really alone on the course. It’s great to hear you guys reiterate that. It’s too bad that Spartan doesn’t listen to you guys more. With the suggestions like with pictures etc. On the course I’ve heard and I know you have about what people like or dislike. People are open and you guys could definitely be a great resource for spartan. Hopefully you can get Mack out there. I’ll be running the ultra and my friend will be running the beast. He’s prepping for his first ultra in Fayetteville a couple weeks after New Jersey. I really enjoyed that course last year. It’s also a great beginner course. Hopefully I’ll see you guys out there and I know if I do you’ll both great with a smile and some encouragement. Always humble and helpful.

Should I expect all of these at my 10k Spartan race in NH next month

which is better a sprint or a super?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are in the mood for. The sprint is a 5k while the super is a 10k. You will get more obstacles in the super, and usually there are some really fun ones there that you'd miss in a sprint. The sprint is a great first race, or even a great way to check out a new race venue, but we are there for the obstacles... so we'd have to recommend the super!

So do they really make you do the burpees?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
If you run in an open wave heat, you are supposed to do the penalty burpees if you fail an obstacle, and they hope you do them, but there is no one there to really enforce them. I say try your best on the obstacle and if you fail, do your best to crank out burpees. It'll be tough but you can get thru them. It'll make the medal earned at the finish that much more worthwhile knowing you gave it your all! If you run in Age Group or Elite, they are watching to make sure you don't cheat.

I signed up for my first spartan race in August, its the Super and I am just worried about picking bad shoes. Any tips/recommendations?
@OCRKings2 жыл бұрын
Congrats and welcome to the Spartan life! Just go out there and push yourself a bit but have fun. Shoes are the toughest piece of kit to lock in on. Whatever shoes you pick, make sure you get plenty of training miles in them, so they break in and your feet are used to them. If you can go for a 10k trail run or hike and your feet are feeling great - you will be in good shape for the Super. Don't be afraid to step into a river or in some mud puddles during your training runs... So you know what they feel like wet/muddy/slippery. In 2021 Mack and I both ran in Spartan's OCR Speed shoe for every race. We both liked them a bunch. Thought they were similar to Spartan's older RDs, but enough upgrades to make them better (just a tad more cushioning underfoot we think). The Altra brand has a really wide toe box, which we love, but neither of us are a fan of the zero drop. Can really feel it in the achilles. Might be great for some people, but not us. La Sportiva has been a great brand for me (Damer), but were blister creators for Mack. Some people love the VJ shoe brand, but there was no cushion under foot and they were just too narrow for both of us. I'm currently testing an Inov8 shoe that has a slightly wide toe box, great cushioning, but drainage is terrible - so they fill up with mud water during races. There are a few other brands out there that I could mention as well, but shoes are just tough. Feet are so specific and hard to lock in on. I'm planning on a new pair of Spartan's (Craft) OCR Speed for 2022 and share time between those and the Inov8 Ultra X-Talon 260 V2. Hope that helps and have a great race! August has some great Supers planned (New Hampshire, WV, Hawaii, etc). Hope its a good one!
